In this exclusive interview with Shoulder of Orion: The Blade Runner Podcast, Patrick & Jaime are joined by Blade Runner actor Kevin Thompson. Kevin most famously played J.F. Sebastian's toy bear in Blade Runner as well as a myriad of other roles. Kevin takes us through his time on Blade Runner, his relationship with Ridley Scott, Rutger Hauer and so much more. Now that we've got the complete first arc of Titan's first non-LA Blade Runner comic—the wonderful Blade Runner: Tokyo Nexus—we wanted to chat with the person responsible for creating this bold new vision: first-time comic writer (!) Kianna Shore.
Set in Tokyo in 2015, Tokyo Nexus is a story about identity, class, trauma, and finding connection in a disconnected future. In this episode, Kianna guides Patrick through these first four issues, discusses her "big break" in the comics industry, and talks about working with amazing collaborators like Blade Runner Origin's Mellow Brown and Tokyo Nexus' artist Mariano Taibo.
Issues 1-4 of Tokyo Nexus are on sale wherever you buy comic books. There are some light spoilers in here, so we'd suggest giving them a read before listening!

In this episode, your hosts Patrick and Jaime along with returning contributing host, Peter from the Midwest sit down to discuss Andy, the android from Alien: Romulus. While tossing around episode ideas, Peter from the Midwest offered that Andy might be a fascinating topic to discuss as a comparison to the Replicants featured in the Blade Runner films. It is widely agreed that Andy, as seen in Alien: Romulus is the most in-depth depiction of androids in the Alien universe yet. Join us as we jump head first into this exciting yet complicated discussion.

When we heard Mellow Brown, writer of 2021's stupendous Blade Runner: Origins, was going to be at Comic-Con, we knew we needed to talk to him! Along the way, we learned about his newest Titan project: consulting on Blade Runner: Tokyo Nexus, a thrilling new arc written by Kianna Shore (with art by Mariano Taibo) you can pick up today from your local comic store or from Titan's website.
There's also been some new news on the Prime series Blade Runner 2099, and we spend some time at the beginning delving into that. These are exciting times to be a Blade Runner fan, and the coming year is going to be one to remember!

At long last, your hosts and contributing hosts at Shoulder of Orion break down Deckard's recreated meeting with Rachael. There is so much in this scene. From its subtext, to its music and framing, each moment in this loaded scene is pure Blade Runner. Please join Patrick, Micah, Peter from the Midwest and returning guest Ricardo Silvestri as we explore this moment in Blade Runner 2049 and its far reaching implications on the story and maybe the story to come.

Is Blade Runner considered CyberPunk? That's the question that inspired this month’s episode. The word cyberpunk has been tossed around in relation to Blade Runner for many years. Patrick & Jaime have talked briefly about cyberpunk while never fully investigating the topic. For this episode, we’ve invited cyberpunk author T.R. Napper and first time guest and inspiration behind this episode, longtime listener a.t. johnston.
Join us as we explore this fascinating topic with the experts.

A curious bit of news recently broke suggesting Blade Runner 2099 is going to begin production in Europe in May. While we haven't as yet been able to verify this is 100% factual, it's got us thinking: what's the state of this thing?
On today's episode, Jaime and Patrick go through some of what we're hearing around the internet about this Prime Video series helmed by Silk Luisa. They also discuss some of her previous work, and some recent series that have hit—and missed—the mark when it comes to adapting science fiction and noir IPs for television.

2023 was quite a year at the movies. "Barbenheimer" became a cultural phenomenon. Marvel lost its mojo. And a ten million-dollar subtitled Godzilla movie became the most successful live-action Japanese film in US history.
But Godzilla Minus One is so, so much more than just a box office success story. It's a deeply human tale that feels urgently suited to our time in world history. It manages to be both terrifying and profoundly moving, with unforgettable performances, a rigorous attention to detail, and one of the great musical scores of the 21st century.
It's also an absolute masterclass in how to create character-driven storytelling. The characters in Minus One feel like living, breathing, fully-realized human beings.
In this impassioned episode of Frame Rate, Jaime, Christian, and lifelong Godzilla nut Patrick discuss why this film is so important, and examine the reasons why Takashi Yamazaki's new Goji vision is resonating so deeply with audiences around the world.
As we close out our sixth year, we thought we'd return to the sort of content that's been our bread and butter since the very beginning: character analysis.
This episode was prompted by a simple question: is Luv really an antagonist? She's murderous, she's frightening, she's chasing our heroes ... but she's also clearly a victim. She's acting within the boundaries of her conditioning and programming. So who's really the "bad guy?"
Jaime, Patrick, and Micah have a great time hashing out these sorts of questions—and the questions within these questions—on this thought-provoking episode.
From all of us at Shoulder of Orion: thank you SO MUCH for your support, your listenership, and your friendship over this past year. Wishing you peace and warmth as 2023 comes to a close.

Bill George was just starting out a career in Hollywood as a VFX artist and model maker when he got the call to join the storied Blade Runner model shop. He would go on to play a pivotal role in creating some of Blade Runner's most iconic props, including the Spinner and the Blimp.
In this incredible interview, Bill gives Jaime and Patrick (and you!) behind-the-scenes glimpses into how these amazing structures came to life.

The Blade Runner universe inspires art of all sorts: visual media, poetry, cosplay, you name it. But the form of media most touched by Blade Runner's influence might just be music. Vangelis' legendary score (complemented beautifully by Wallfisch and Zimmer decades later) conjures an atmosphere that many musicians have sought to reconnect with over the years.
But this often translates to aesthetic choices. Synth-heavy, reverb-laden, soaked with the atmosphere of dark streets and wet neon.
When we heard Dissona, a progressive metal band out of Chicago, was working on a Blade Runner-inspired EP called Dreadfully Distinct, we knew we HAD to speak with them.
More than just attempting to capture the "sound" of Blade Runner—although there's some of that here too—Dissona took a more philosophical approach to the material. The result is three tracks that focus on characters from the films, charting their internal emotional journeys while taking the listener on fantastical journeys through the world of Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049.
We highly recommend you listen to the tracks "Prodigal Son" and "Skinjob" before listening to the episode—and make sure you watch their videos as well. You'll hear much of them in the episode itself, but it'll be useful to give everything a listen/viewing before diving in. You can listen to the tracks on streaming services and here, on Bandcamp. The videos are available on YouTube.
The full EP premieres on November 10, so be sure to add it wherever you listen to music!

We are excited to share with you part two in our two-part series discussing the resonance of the Blade Runner films. We are proud to present another entry into our Anatomy of A Scene series. In this episode, Patrick and Jaime are joined by contributing hosts Micah Greene & Peter From the Midwest. We realized that despite 2049 being in the world for over 5 years, we've never discussed the presence of children. The Morricole orphanage is a great entry into that discussion. Join us as we discuss the details of one the most fascinating scenes in the Blade Runner film universe.

In this episode, Patrick & Jaime are joined by longtime listener, sometimes guest, Ricardo Silvestre to push back against some of our ideas and opinions presented in our Deck-A-Rep and Bryant and Deckard episode. Is there a definitive answer to the Deck-A-Rep conversation? Does it matter? Is Deckard central to the story of Blade Runner or is he a distraction? We dive into all of this and more. In this episode, Jaime & Patrick are joined by contributing host Micah Greene to discuss the role of women in both Blade Runner films. This episode pivots back to some heavier topics for us as we delve into female representation, and the idea that even films we love should not be shielded from scrutiny. This was a thoughtful and sobering discussion and a return to form for us. We hope you enjoy!

Jaime and Patrick are back with another entry into their Anatomy of A Scene series. In this episode, your hosts break down Officer K's first meeting Deckard and how it reflects key events in the original film, and what it means for the overall story. Something we've noticed lately—in social media circles, in email write-ins, in comments on episodes—is an uptick in people saying something to the effect of "Blade Runner 2049 feels more resonant in my life now than the original does."
This isn't an argument over which film is better. It's not even an argument over which film is more relevant. Rather, it's a conversation about why some fans might be feeling like 2049 is capturing something specific to this particular time and place we find ourselves in.
In this episode, Jaime, Patrick, Micah, and Peter read listener comments on this idea and pose the question to themselves as well.

Hey SOO Family! It's been a crazy month in podcast land, especially for our other show (Perfect Organism). We wanted to take a quick opportunity to check in on the Blade Runner side of things with this minisode, in which we tee up quite a bit of future content we've got cooking.
We also discuss some of the latest rumors about Blade Runner 2099, and think through some ways this release could be handled in a way befitting the legacy of Blade Runner.
We'll be back with more involved episodes soon—thank you, as always, for the support!

We're taking a break this week as we work on our Alien Day 2023 content.
Sebastián Lelio's The Wonder might look like a typical period drama from the outside, but anyone who's watched it knows it's anything but typical. A devastating look at trauma, belief, and redemption, The Wonder unfolds almost like a horror film.
Based on a novel and starring a riveting Florence Pugh, The Wonder released to Netflix in late 2022. If you haven't watched it yet, be sure to check it out before listening to this episode (as is the case with all Frame Rates). There are massive spoilers inside.
But if you have watched it, join Jaime, Patrick, and Micah as they discuss this powerful film and its resonance in their lives.

In our next entry into our 'Anatomy of A Scene' series, Patrick and Jaime are joined by long time contributing hosts Peter from the Midwest, and Micah Greene. This episode finds us exploring what exactly is happening in yet another semi-controversial love scene in Blade Runner 2049. What is transpiring in the time Mariette enters K's apartment until the time she leaves? Is this a tender ménage à trois between three non-humans or is there more at play? Patrick & Jaime sit down to talk about one man's quest to find Harrison Ford. That man is Patrick James O'Hare. From his first memories of seeing Star Wars in the theater as a small child to watching Ford reprise his role as Rick Deckard in 2017's Blade Runner 2049, Paddy takes us through his admiration and obsession with the actor, and what his documentary hopes to accomplish.

In this new series, Anatomy of A Scene, Patrick and Jaime breakdown a scene in Blade Runner where Captain Bryant is explaining the mission to a very perplexed Rick Deckard. Patrick and Jaime have discussed this scene privately for a while in terms of its implication on the 'Deck-a-Rep' conversation and how it plays into the overall narrative in the film. As with so much in the world of Blade Runner, our conclusions and speculation add another layer in a world where so much of it seems intentionally ambiguous. We hope you enjoy and we'd love to hear your thoughts and ideas as well. Enjoy.

The world of Blade Runner has had a consistent shroud of mystery over it since its release in 1982. From the rain-soaked streets to the neon signs illuminating the city, there is no corner that's not riddled with questions and shadow. Infiltrating this environment is the presence of a massive amount police. They're on every corner of seemingly every street. In this episode, Patrick & Jaime dive into discussing why the police have such a military-style presence and how that affects the world they inhabit. We hope you enjoy!

It's been three years since we've had our friend and guest Paul M. Sammon on the show to talk about Blade Runner. To remedy that, Patrick & Jaime asked him back to discuss the 40 year legacy of Blade Runner, what it means to him, and the road ahead. This was a delightful interview and we hope you enjoy.

It's been five years since the release of Blade Runner 2049. In that time, it took us a while to dedicate an episode to Officer KD6.3-7. We were delighted to hear from a new listener about his resonance with K and what that means to him. Hearing from that listener inspired us to invite him on the show and jump back into the discussion. Please join Patrick, Jaime and James as they dive back into the world and the mind of K as we celebrate the anniversary of the release of Blade Runner 2049.

When Fria Ligan (Free League Publishing) released the Alien RPG back in 2019, it was a watershed moment in Alien fandom. Buzzing with drama and detail, this tabletop role playing game gave Alien fans a universe of new content to explore together.
So when it was announced early in 2022 that Free League was working on a Blade Runner RPG, fans around the world took to the internet to express their delight.
In today’s episode, Jaime and Patrick get a peek behind the curtain with Free League’s Co-founder and CEO Tomas Härenstam. Tomas is the Lead Game Designer on both the Blade Runner RPG and the Alien RPG, as well as Mutant: Year Zero (the origin of the acclaimed Year Zero engine driving both the Blade Runner and Alien games).

In celebration of forty years of Blade Runner, Shoulder of Orion is thrilled and honored to present to you an exclusive commentary track for Blade Runner: The Final Cut by Charles de Lauzirika! As Restoration Producer for The Final Cut, Charles had a monumental task: to work with Ridley Scott, Warner Brothers, and a dedicated team of specialists to produce the definitive edition of one of the most influential films ever made.
Charles, who's also directed landmark documentary features like Dangerous Days: Making Blade Runner, is a friend of the show and a constant presence in Blade Runner fandom. Jaime, Patrick, and the whole Shoulder of Orion team are so grateful for Charles' time and energy—and so excited to share this exclusive commentary track with our listeners!
The commentary track starts after a brief intro. We'll give a clear countdown so you can press Play at the correct moment.
Happy forty years, everyone!

In observance of forty years of Blade Runner—and in response to the many, many requests we've gotten over the years to discuss this—the Shoulder of Orion team is finally tackling The Big Question: is Deckard a Replicant?
In this kickoff show, Jaime and Patrick unpack some of the reasons this "debate" has gotten so complicated over the years. As we've gotten more editions of the movie, we've gotten more evidence (from Ridley Scott) that Deckard pretty clearly should be considered a Replicant—but we also have Harrison Ford and Hampton Fancher arguing against that idea, and an initial theatrical cut of the film (not to mention source novel) that runs with the assumption that he's human.
Where does that leave us? And, perhaps more importantly: does it matter? Does the film hold up to multiple interpretations of the truth?
We don't come up with many answers to these questions, but we do our best to at least get the conversation started. More to come!

Daryl Hannah's portrayal of Pris in Blade Runner has inspired countless works of tribute art, contemporary runway fashion, and killer cosplays. But beyond her cyberpunk/clown aesthetic and gymnastic combat skills lies a complicated, nuanced character.
In this episode, Jaime and Patrick discuss Pris as a prism for issues like enslavement, otherism, and manipulation. They also talk about how Pris sets up wonderful horror beats in Blade Runner, and how she ends up tricking not only Sebastian and Deckard but the audience itself.

Vangelis’ score for Blade Runner remains a high-water mark in film score history. Expressive, darkly dramatic, full of undertones of film noir and an imagined future, his soundtrack is just as iconic as the film itself.
In this episode, Jaime, Patrick, and new Contributing Host Dr. Robin Bunce go track by track through the 1994 Warner release. Although it deviates significantly from the score as it appears in the film, it’s the version many of us know best—and the one you’ll find available most readily on streaming platforms. (Never fear: we will return to analyze other editions in future episodes!)
So pull up the 1994 version, give it a listen, and join us as we dive very, very deeply into this richly textured masterwork.

When we heard there was going to be a second Blade Runner film, most of us immediately wanted to know two things: who was going to direct it, and who was going to write the soundtrack.
Vangelis’ score for the 1982 film is a watershed moment in film score history, and for good reason. The music for Blade Runner 2049 would have to be special indeed to earn its place alongside its forerunner.
Lucky for us, Ben Wallfisch and Hans Zimmer delivered more than most of us could’ve dreamed for 2049. And in this episode, Jaime and Patrick dive deeply into that music, examining how it was made—and why, perhaps, it was made that way.

When Shoulder of Orion launched four years ago, we didn’t know what it would become. We knew we had a great film to talk about. We knew we had another film coming, and we knew we hoped it would live up to our impossible expectations.
But more than anything, we knew we were desperate to talk about this incredible universe. And we knew that through talking about it, we would find friends around the world who felt the same way.
After one hundred episodes, we know those truths to be more evident than ever: these films speak to people, and through speaking about them we are connected.
Join Jaime, Patrick, and Dan on this tour back through our first one hundred episodes. And know you were a part of every one of them, whether we mentioned you on air or not.

Along the way, he and his collaborators have garnered industry awards, won over fans around the world, and added several memorable new characters to the imaginations of Blade Runner aficionados everywhere.

In the weeks leading up to Blade Runner 2049's release, word spread that Edward James Olmos had been on set. For Blade Runner fans around the globe, this was huge news: Gaff is one of the most enduringly popular characters in the first film, and has become a central character of fan theories, artwork, and more over the past three and a half decades.
The Gaff we see in 2049 is one many of us didn't expect. But his appearance, totaling just over one minute of screen time, is unforgettable.
In this minisode, Jaime and Patrick take some time off from feverish Alien Day preparations (April 26—follow Perfect Organism for details!) to discuss Gaff's appearance in 2049. This is just the tip of a deeper Gaff iceberg to come, as we plan on dedicating a full episode to his character in the near future.

At the core of Blade Runner 2049—and at the core of its predecessor—are great characters. Strip away the unforgettable aesthetics, the world-building, even the music, and 2049 still feels, at its heart, like a Blade Runner film.
In this ninth entry into our ongoing series, we explore some of 2049's most intriguing characters. From Sapper Morton, gentle war machine, to Mariette, a replicant with a big secret, the characters of this film live on long after the credits roll.

We’ve discussed the concept art, we’ve discussed the architecture, and now, at last, we come to the production design of Blade Runner 2049 in all its facets: the cityscapes, the objects, the costumes—the physical world these characters inhabit.
We also spend time unpacking the ways in which the built environment of Blade Runner 2049 diverges from the iconic world created in Blade Runner. The visual language of 2049 is at once a profound departure from Ridley Scott’s first film and an homage to it; an echo, an aftershock, a premonition.

Blade Runner 2049 proved itself almost immediately iconic in many ways: the otherworldly visual language, the intoxicating score, the characters we stayed up talking about till odd hours of the night, etc.
For fans of architecture, the built environment of Blade Runner 2049 is particularly special. A fusion of past, present, and imagined, the architecture in the film is a wonderful glimpse into deeper truths within the world these characters inhabit.
On this episode, Jaime and Patrick are joined by our ever-brilliant friend Dr. Robin Bunce. On its face, this episode is really an investigation into several key buildings in the film—but as you'll hear, things go quite a bit deeper than that.

For many fans in the English-speaking world, Blade Runner 2049 was their first exposure to the work of Denis Villeneuve. But for those lucky enough to have discovered his oeuvre earlier—whether through his searing Canadian work or his Hollywood breakthrough in the early 2010s—Blade Runner 2049 was confirmation of what they likely already knew: Denis Villeneuve is a talent of the very highest caliber.
In this next entry of our extended exploration into Blade Runner 2049, Dan, Jaime, and Patrick discuss Denis’ unique filmmaking gifts through the lens of his previous films, laying the groundwork for our next conversation on how those gifts helped make Blade Runner 2049 the miracle we know it to be today.

Why does the story of Luke Skywalker and the Rebellion resonate with us? Why do we flock to stories of resistance and uprising in films and books? What speaks to us about these particular fables? Blade Runner (1982) is singular in that it's a film that never asked for a sequel, nor, arguably, did it need one. In 2017, despite a lack of demand, the world, and fandom was given a sequel. In this second entry in our new series, covering Blade Runner: 2049, Dan, Patrick, and Jaime discuss whether or not Blade Runner needed a sequel, and where fandom was before the news of 2049.

In 1980, David Lynch, widely known for his avant-garde cinema aesthetic, briefly changed course and released one of the best pictures of the 20th Century. The Elephant Man, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, Sir John Hurt, and Anne Bancroft took critics and audiences by storm with its depiction of John Merrick, a real man that lived in breathed in turn of the century England.
Jaime, and special guest Mark Deckard dive into The Elephant Man, and all of the questions surrounding his story.

In this episode of our Patreon exclusive show, Jaime, and Patrick discuss David Lynch's divisive yet visually arresting film, Dune.
Dune, released in 1984, was the culmination of years of struggle to bring Frank Herberts seminal novel to the big screen. Notable attempts include the now storied Jodorowsky version which fell apart during pre-production.

Enhance...ENHANCE... We've all heard those words in countless films. In this second episode of our Tech Spotlight, highlighting the technology and hardware of the Blade Runner films, Patrick and Dan dive into the design and use of the Esper machine that our disgruntled detective uses to track down the escaped Replicants. The conversation took a few turns we weren't necessarily expecting, and Rutger Hauer even chimes in on what he said was his favorite scene in the 1982 classic.

Damien Chazelle's fourth film, First Man, was undeniably one of 2018's best. The VFX team won the Oscar for their unparalleled work in bringing the Earth and the Moon to life with stunning realism and breathtaking photography. Based on James Hansen's biography, the film takes us beyond the Gemini and Apollo programs' achievements and moves inward, to an intimate portrayal of Armstrong's personal life and family struggles.
Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy's performances are as haunting as they are beautiful, and the quiet, atmospheric style of their portrayal has left us with a film that is certainly one of the best of the decade.

In Christopher Nolan's 2010 blockbuster, Inception, themes we are familiar with from science fiction are explored in a unique and visually-stunning way.
Winner of four Oscars, with a star-studded cast and incredible performances, as well as one of Hanz Zimmer's best scores (in Dan's opinion), this film asks of us the BIG questions: what is the nature of our reality? Can what we dream be real? If you had unlimited time with your loved ones, what would you build? What would you explore?
Wildly-successful, this film has something for everyone; but while it's easy to watch it as a heist/Bond sci-fi-action movie, that's just scratching the surface.

How do we rise to meet the challenge of the moment? Those questions and more are discussed in depth in this round table episode.

At the very end of 2019, we lost yet another Blade Runner great: visual futurist, designer, and artist Syd Mead. In this episode, Jaime, Patrick, and Dan pay tribute to the man who was integral to much of the concept design and visual feel of Blade Runner, Aliens, Tron, and Blade Runner 2049 among many other films. Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of Mr. Mead, and we offer this episode as a final thank you to a man who has taken us by the hand for most of our lives and turned our collective dreams of the future into a tangible reality that will live on forever.

In this episode Shoulder of Orion commemorates the two year anniversary of the release of Blade Runner 2049. Founder and host Jaime Prater and special guest host Inge Kolstad sit down to interview Michael Legato a VFX coordinator on the film. At the heart of our discussion are the over two hundred images that Legato released on social media from his time on set. From stories about going out with Sean Young in drag, to a mysterious dream sequence with horses, Michael talks intimately about what it was like being in the trenches of Denis Villenueve's masterpiece Blade Runner 2049.

With the sudden passing of the beloved Rutger Hauer, we decided it was important to commemorate his life and work, and of course the iconic characters he has portrayed in his acting career. “Music is the most multi-dimensional knowledge we have. It's as specific as nature can be. Any form nature takes contains a specific sound combination. Music is a language. It's a memory of the cosmic system, a memory of past and future. Above all it's science not entertainment.”

It was clear from our first deep-dive into the Theatrical Cut that one episode wasn't going to be enough to cover it. In Part 2, Jaime and Patrick are joined by frequent guest Peter and first-time guest Steve for an extended, wide-ranging investigation into Blade Runner as it first greeted the world at large in 1982.
This time around, the team spends a great deal of time looking at historical context—not just the history of the film, but the history of ourselves. Steve, a film/TV professional who fell in love with Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? in the sixties and saw Blade Runner in the theater, shares his unique perspective with us. We also take time exploring initial critical reactions to the film—and end up finding some kindred spirits in small-market newspapers nearly forty years ago.
The journey of Blade Runner is a crazy, quixotic, beautiful mess. We are so lucky to explore it with all of you.

In this episode Jaime, Patrick, and Dan interview the lauded Hampton Fancher, who wrote the screenplay for Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049. This is an exclusive interview coming on the heels of Fancher’s new book, ‘The Wall Will Tell You’ which acts as a poet’s guide to screenwriting. The conversation then shifts to Blade Runner, Philip K Dick and the generation of filmmakers that Fancher has helped to inspire. This interview is a dream come true for all us at Shoulder of Orion. Welcome to the first installment of our first-ever Shoulder of Orion miniseries: A 700 Layer Cake: The Cult of Blade Runner! Since we'll be spending a great deal of time over the coming months focusing on the first Blade Runner film, we thought it fitting to go back to the very beginning: Philip K. Dick's seminal Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
Before there was a global fan community—before there were films, before there were digital paintings and tribute albums and comic books and computer games and fan conventions—there was a little book by a brilliant, troubled man.
Our story—the story of this very podcast—begins with that novel.
Let's start from the beginning.

It's no accident that it has taken the Blade Runner podcast nearly a year to release a Deckard episode: he's one of the most complex, nuanced characters in a saga full of complexity and nuance, and he's surprisingly hard to talk about. In this deeply personal episode, JM, Dan, and Patrick take the conversation far beyond the typical is-he-or-isn't-he-a-replicant argument and discuss the full arc of this complicated character, from his roots in Philip K. Dick's novel to the sublime moment in 2049 when he meets his child for the first time.
We also look to our social media group (Fields of Calantha) for inspiration, sharing some personal reflections on Deckard from listeners.
It might've taken us a year to get to this moment, but we feel like the resultant conversation was worth it. We brought our all to this one.
We hope you enjoy it.

Joi, as played by Ana de Armas, continues to be one of the most discussed characters from Blade Runner 2049. In our ongoing conversations, Shoulder of Orion hosts: Dan, Patrick, JM, and contributing host Micah invite Dr. Robin Bunce back on to speak on Joi's role in 2049 and her humanity (or lack thereof) within the story. Rounding out the symposium panel is special guest Barbara Schmuker, a first-time guest on the show, and yet another important voice in the fandom. Along the way, they learn the backstories behind some of the most unforgettable moments in the film—and gain amazing firsthand insights into the spur-of-the-moment decisions that shaped the movie into the transcendent document it became.
It’s one of the best conversations we’ve ever had.

Few cinematic objects are as iconic—and as frequently copied—as the legendary Spinner. In this episode (our first Tech Spotlight!), Dan and Patrick go in-depth on the beloved vehicle, delving into its astonishingly believable appearance in Blade Runner, its evolved design(s) in Blade Runner 2049, and beyond. And using Dan's background in air traffic control, they pick apart the actual flight sequence in Blade Runner in a level of detail you need to hear to believe.
Below are two examples of a PAR (Precision Approach Radar) scope, mentioned in the scene where Gaff's spinner is descending over the LAPD roof following instructions from air traffic control.

A couple of weeks ago, a new listener named Evie wrote in and opened up to us about how she experiences the world of Blade Runner. All of the staff at Shoulder of Orion were collectively heartened and blown away by the contents of her letter, so much so that we invited her as a guest on the podcast. At that point, Evie hadn't seen 2049. Please join us as we discuss the importance of stories featured in both Blade Runner films, what it means to fit in, to be validated as a human, and live our collective agencies. Joining us in this episode are hosts JM Prater, Patrick Greene, his partner, Micah Greene, and our newly recurring host, Daniele Ferlito.

Dr. Robin Bunce, a historian of political ideas at the University of Cambridge, published a thought-provoking article in the New Statesman in October on how Blade Runner 2049's dystopian setting feels unsettlingly close to our own current cultural-political moment. We reached out to him for an interview, and it was so fascinating we called him back for a follow-up! In the first half, Patrick talks to Robin about geopolitics, architecture, slaves, distribution of wealth, and more; in the second half, JM focuses on why Dr. Bunce thinks Luv is the most fascinating character in the whole film.
Be sure to read Dr. Bunce's article, and let us know your thoughts! We look forward to having him back on the show.

I am pleased to bring you an exclusive interview with Charles de Lauzirika, the director behind Blade Runner: The Final Cut, and director of Dangerous Days: Making Blade Runner. Charles spends a good amount of time, discussing his love for Blade Runner, and his involvement with the restoration of what is now widely known as Ridley Scott's definitive edit of his 1982 masterpiece, Blade Runner. It's important to note that without Charles, there would be no Final Cut. We talk about all of that and more. Please join us for a listen.

In this exclusive interview episode, Jaime sits down with the minature artists behind Blade Runner: 2049: Weta Workshop's Steven Saunders, Chris Menges, and Joaquin Loyzaga. Learn the secrets behind expansive worlds like the Trash Mesa, and that incredible and amazing cityscape we have loved since our affair with the original film. This conversation was informative and surreal. Thanks to Steven, Chris and Joaquin for their time and efforts, and lifting the veil for all of us fans.

In what is our longest episode yet, clocking in at around two hours, Jaime and Patrick are joined by Micah Greene, fan of Blade Runner, and coincidentally, Patrick's spouse and partner. Hold on to your hats, this episode is intense, as Jaime, Patrick and Micah breakdown the role and portrayal of women in Blade Runner 2049, while briefly discussing the visibility of people of color. The best science fiction asks hard questions, it shows us a mirror of ourselves, pushing us to explore, understand more. This is exactly what this amazing conversation turns into. We hope you enjoy.
