Solving the Riddle of Being Human
"We're kind of just thrown into this gig, and we gotta make sense of it."
In this enlightening episode, Sah D’Simone sits down with Peggy Kelley, the lead chaplain at Cedars-Sinai, to unravel the profound mysteries of being human. Together, they dive deep into the spiritual riddles we all face and explore how to make sense of life’s most challenging moments.
Peggy opens up about her extraordinary work with sick and dying children, offering a glimpse into the world of pediatric care through the eyes of a chaplain. She shares how her mystical “superpowers” can help us navigate our own lives with greater depth and understanding. From the innate spirituality of children to nurturing a connection with the divine, Peggy’s stories from the bedside are both heart-wrenching and inspiring.
This conversation touches on essential themes: the randomness of life, the mysteries of death, and how we can find beauty and grace in the midst of suffering. Peggy reveals what it’s like to be present with those at the end of life and how embracing mortality can lead to personal transformation.
They also explore what it means to be a modern mystic, the role of spirituality across faith traditions, and the power of compassion, love, and acceptance in healing. Whether you’re grappling with life’s big questions or simply seeking deeper meaning, this episode offers wisdom and comfort through the lens of someone who has witnessed over 2,000 final breaths.
Join Sah and Peggy for a soul-stirring conversation on death, life, and everything in between.
GUEST BIO
Peggy Kelly has been the lead Christian chaplain at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for the past 13 years. Originally from Minnesota, she grew up in a haunted lake house, where her spiritual inclinations developed from a young age. A naturally spiritual and imaginative child, Peggy initially pursued a career in acting and comedy, moving to Los Angeles with dreams of working in TV and film. She performed improvisational comedy for Disney and worked in the entertainment industry. However, the events of 9/11 prompted a profound shift in her path. Listening to her inner spiritual calling, she transitioned into chaplaincy, a role in which she has since accompanied over 2,000 people through the final moments of their lives. Peggy views this work as a privilege, being present for the most profound and vulnerable experiences of others. Outside of her intense professional life, Peggy embraces the vibrant lifestyle of being a "gal in LA."
