Coming up behind hind hind is a new episode of Strange Phenomena! In this episode, we're digging into the third to last track on The Red Shoes: Big Stripey Lie.
A song that almost didn't make the final track listing for the album, Big Stripey Lie sits toward the end of the album and is probably the most cryptic song on the album. In this episode, Cecilee and her guest Matthew Song, a long-time Kate fan, dig into this song. They speculate on what a big stripey lie actually is, where it sits on the album, and also about their love for this song!

With no words and no song, you can dance a dream with your body on as you listen to this episode about the title track to Kate Bush's seventh album The Red Shoes!
For this episode, we get to talk with a long-time Kate Bush fan, David Manuel, who cites this song as one of his favorites (and spoiler alert: this is a top ten favorite song for our host as well!). We get to talk about the 1940s movie The Red Shoes, a movie that was most likely the inspiration for this song, as well as the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of the same name, and how those influences wove their way into this song.
So let's move like the diva do!

Now that we've danced a bit, it's time to get a little emotional with the single Moments of Pleasure. Released as a single in late 1993, Moments of Pleasure is a beloved song by many a Kate fan and it's not hard to see why. Emotional lyrics? Check. Sweeping string arrangement? Check. Amazing vocal performance? Oh yeah! Big check right there!
In this episode, Cecilee talks with Rick Campbell again about this song's history, what it means to us, and how the song has grown with us as we've gotten older. So time to get a little reflective and hey, while you're at it, can you turn the lights up?

Cecilee sits down with long-time Canadian Kate fan Rick Campbell to talk about this song and its history, the lyrics, the iconic music video as shown in The Line, The Cross, and the Curve and what the song means to us! We talk about the history of the song, our own history with it and discovering Kate at a young age, and so much more! This was recorded in June 2022, so there's also talk about our excitement at new Kate Bush fans finding her music through Stranger Things!

Cecilee is joined by fellow Kate fan James diBenedetto, who has been a Kate fan since the 90s and counts this song as one of his favorite Kate songs! Well what a week it has been! Our lovely Kate is now sitting at #1 on Spotify, she has scored her first top 10 hit in the US, she's reentered the UK charts.....
And it's all because of a Netflix show!
This week, we're adding on to the story of Running Up That Hill, which you may remember I recorded back in 2019 here! Well, now there's more to the story!
The show Stranger Things used Running Up That Hill in the current season as a favorite song for one of the main characters, Max. In the fourth episode, the song is further used as a device to save Max's life. Because of this emotional scene, Running Up That Hill has been introduced to millions of new fans, especially younger fans. We're going to talk about how this song came to be used in Stranger Things, what Kate thinks of the show (she's a fan!), and our own thoughts on the exploding popularity of this song.
You can find that pivotal scene here on YouTube.

And now we come to the final collaboration and the final episode for the Sensual World season.
Roy Harper is a critically acclaimed English singer/songwriter who has been around since the 60s and whose music has been a bit part of Kate's life. We've talked about him before on the podcast when Kate covered his song Another Day in the Lionheart season, and when Kate sang on Roy's original song You (The Game Part II) in the Never For Ever season.
Now we get to talk about a third time when his name comes up in her musical history!
The song Once is the title track for Roy's 1990 album and it's a song that our lovely Kate sang harmonies and background vocals on. Listen as we talk about this slow grower of a song and also about Kate Bush championing lesser-known artists!

Now on to collaboration #2 for the Sensual World era!
What does the frontman for an 80s synth rock band and Kate Bush have in common?
Why, this song!
Midge Ure is best known as the frontman for the band Ultravox, who were known for huge 80s hits like Vienna (voted in the UK the best #2 hit of all time and for good reason!), Dancing With Tears In My Eyes, and Reap the Wild Wind (their only US chart entry).
In 1985, he went solo with an album called The Gift. His follow-up album, Answers to Nothing, was released in 1987 and features our lovely Kate on his song Sister and Brother.
So listen as we explore this album track and the story of how Midge Ure and Kate Bush got involved for this song!

Now we're on to the last three episodes of the Sensual World season, and we're starting this part with three collaborations that our lovely Kate took part in!
The first is a song she recorded in the background for the pop group Go West. Stylistically very different from the upbeat pop that the group was known for, The King is Dead benefits from a jazzy style and of course, our lovely Kate in the background!

This week, we're talking about a cover song (yes! a cover song) by our lovely Kate, of one of her musical heroes: Elton John. Recorded for a compilation album in 1991, Rocket Man was also a charting UK and European hit. And for our discussion of the song this week, we have frequent guest Diego Ortega, to talk about our thoughts on Kate's cover version and also what the song is about underneath that cheery arrangement!

What a way to start off the new year 2022: with a new episode of Strange Phenomena!
We're back from our holiday break to finish out the Sensual World era of Kate's music. This week, it's just Cecilee as she talks about the instrumental track The Confrontation, a b-side from the Love and Anger single and a song written specifically for a movie. In this case, like with Ken, written for the Comic Strip movie GLC: The Carnage Continues.
So join us as we talk about this instrumental, one of the few that Kate Bush has ever released, and its context in the Comic Strip movie!

Who's the funky sex machine?
Who's the man we all need?
KEN!!!!!
This week, we're talking about a b-side from Kate Bush's Sensual World era, a song used in a TV movie called GLC: The Carnage Continues, and a song that our host didn't quite like the first time she heard it, but which she now appreciates, especially after talking with our transatlantic guest!
Alex Dale is on the show to talk about this song and explain the British references and just what that TV movie really is about. We also talk about how this song shows off Kate's seldom-seen silly side and her send-up of loud theme songs for 80s action movies.
Music from our host!
When Cecilee isn't talking about Kate Bush, she plays piano and sings her own songs, like our Kate. And she has collected eleven originals and released them on a new album! Never Enough Flowers is available on Spotify, iTunes and wherever you get your music!

No need to wait any longer for this week's episode: it's now here!! This week we're talking (or rather, just Cecilee!) is talking about a favorite b-side of hers from the Sensual World era, I'm Still Waiting.
This nugget of a song was released in several different places over the years (This Woman's Work single! Box sets! American-only EPs!) but not even Kate seems to have talked about this song! So we're talking about it this week! Cecilee talks about why this is one of her favorites from the Sensual World era, the music production and structure (of course!), and what the lyrics mean to her.

And now it's time for the b-sides, collaborations, and other era songs for The Sensual World era of Kate's music. This week, we're talking about a song that's both a b-side AND an album track. Or at least, a bonus track, if you bought the cassette or the CD. And that is a song that Kate recorded in about 24 hours (!!) and was the last song recorded for the album: Walk Straight Down The Middle.
We have a frequent guest for this show, young Kate fan Diego Ortega, to talk about this song, which he cites as one of his favorites! We talk about what this song means to us. What does the title mean? And how about that rather skeletal and spooky production? Is this Kate's take on synth pop? And how about those BRAAAAAHHHH sounds at the end?
It's all here in this week's episode!

Now that we're back down to earth after the previous song... it's time to sit with our feelings for a bit, for the epic, emotional album closer This Woman's Work.
Paul Tate, a fellow American Kate fan, is on this week to talk about one of his favorite songs. Whenever Paul is on, we always nerd out about the musicality of Kate's songs and what makes them so uniquely her. This song is no exception! We also talk about the inspiration for this song and its use in the movie it was written for, the 1988 movie She's Having a Baby, as well as the myriad of cover versions both known and lesser-known that have been released over the years.

Get ready to shoot off into the sky on a chilly November night, with track number 9 from The Sensual World, Rocket's Tail! And to join us on the show is friend of (and also outside of!) the show, Zoey, who cites this song as one of her underrated favorites from Kate's catalog!
In this episode, we talk about the dialogue (yes, this is a dialogue song!) between the characters in the song, we speculate about WHO exactly is shooting off into the night, and we talk about, of course, the lovely Trio Bulgarka's contributions to the song and how there is NOTHING else like this in Kate's endless array of songs. A song that begins a cappella, then explodes into an 80s rock song? Not something you'll find everyday!
Only with the lovely Kate Bush!

For this episode, Craig and Cecilee talk about the imagery-laden lyrics and how they touch each of them, as well as the music (of course) and the chord structure of the song as well (of course!), and how the chord structure give the song its unique feel!

Listen as we talk about the movie reference that led to this song's genesis (hint: family saga) and talk about the lyrics and, of course, the musical structure! If you're familiar with the song, you know the structure is pretty free-flowing, more than most Kate songs up to this point, so Cecilee goes into the chords and how the structure works with the song's subject!

Happy New Year 2021 (even if it's a month late!)
Time to flip over the record and begin side two of The Sensual World. This week, we get to talk about one of Kate's most thought-provoking tracks, especially when listening to it in 2021 as a worldwide pandemic rages on: Deeper Understanding, the sixth song from The Sensual World.
And also the first audible appearance of the lovely Trio Bulgarka!
We're calling over to Austria this week for a chat with Paul, a Patreon supporter and fellow Kate Bush fan who puts this song as one of their favorites in Kate's canon. Much is discussed this week about this week's theme, as to be expected for a song about mankind's obsession with technology.
After all, you're probably listening to this on a portable device like something out of a sci-fi novel!

This week, we're going back to '39, before the music started, to a night that someone would rather forget, a night when they danced with the devil: Hitler. Heads We're Dancing is the fifth track on The Sensual World, and is one of the more propulsive songs Kate has ever done. It might even be one of the darkest songs she's ever done as well.
Author James di Benedetto is on the show this week to talk about this song, which is one of his Kate favorites! We talk about our favorite lyrics, the inspiration of the song (hint: the atomic bomb), and everything else about this seemingly charming but actually quite dark song!
