Call of Cthulhu is 40 years old – and to celebrate we’ve put together a low-budget low-talent actual play of the solo adventure Alone Against The Tides. We’ve used some ambient noises from ZapSplat to flesh it out, and, to give it that special something, recorded it very tired with a bit of a cold.
We’ll be at Dragonmeet on the 4th December – come say hi. If there’s something you think we should definitely check out, then leave us a review telling us exactly what that is.
NOTE: I say that an extreme success is a quarter of the skill value, when in fact, it is a fifth. Sorry!
We sit down with Chris Bissette to talk about his new Fighting Fantasy style adventure book for Troika, Down in Yongardy. We discuss his motivations for creating the game, and a little bit about the setting and The Law.
We give Troika a light roasting as well as explore its potential and why it has such a large following.
Plus, we talk about Chris’ Random Adventure Jam, using Twine to create interactive fiction, and the Rainy Day Games feature in the magazine, which he contributes to.
(I thought this wend up on Thursday last week actually, no idea which gremlins got involved to eat the file!)

We talk to Tabletop Gaming’s accidental chess expert, Matthew Vernall about Chess, chess variants, and games that are a bit like chess. Join us for our first external in-person podcast since the before times and experience the slight echo of Chris’ dining room. You’ll learn a lot about chess, and also understand what we mean when we say “bong cloud opening” and “queens go free”.
We discuss Chris McDowall’s d100 chess variants, which can be found here: https://www.bastionland.com/2020/11/d100-chess-scenarios.html – we pick some at random and review them.
We also take a diversion into Matthew’s recently played pile, including Pandemic Legacy Season 0 and mech based RPG Lancer.
We make some Speile des Jahres predictions which ended up being completely wrong, but don’t we sound confident?
Games discussed: Chess, Oh My Goods!, Seven Bridges, Root, Hive, Star Realms, Unmatched, Paris La Cite De Lumiere, Patchwork, Millennium Blades, Botanik and Thrive.

Tabletop Gaming Magazine Issue 55 is here, and we’re giving you a sneak peek. PLUS we have a bonus clip from our interview with Martin Wallace where we ask the very broad question about what he thinks about the state of games. The answer is broad, and does not disappoint.
Discussed in this podcast: Rocketmen, Fallout: The Roleplaying Game, Dune: Adventures in the Imperium, Knock!, Magical Kitties Save the Day, Ten of the Best War-Euros, Ticket to Ride Europe: 15th Anniversary Edition, Hoverboards, Hoverboard Infrastructure, Friendly Local Game Stores, Apparatus, Drowned Earth, Finland, Martin Wallace
Today we talk to Chris McDowall about his, somewhat odd, roleplaying – Electric Bastionland, and his process for making (and breaking) games. Chris has a unique approach to game making which uses the idea of removing things from systems until you have something new as a starting point. We also get Chris’ top five tips for game design and chat about his new 10mm war-game.

Recording this on the "first day back at school" (returning to work after the Christmas break), which quickly became the last day of school (as Lockdown 3.0 began), we chatted about games we've been playing recently, the way we've been playing them, and what we're going to do next.
For Charlie, this meant playing Pitchstorm over Zoom, and wondering how well it worked, and for Chris, this was playing Wavelength, where we chat about Zoom fatigue and trying virtual tabletops. That's not to say it's not doable - Charlie hasn't stopped talking about playing her weekly D&D game since she started, and how well this works online!
For a wholly different way to play games online, had you thought about playing a game over Twitter? We discussed an article from Miniature Wargames issue 454 called Tweeting with Twits by Conrad Kinch about the turn-based method and benefits to playing a turn-based wargame online, which they added phenomenal drama to, with photographs, flyovers, and more, and consider how this ran similarities to an RPG.
We also discussed solo RPGs, as Chris has been playing The Wretched, where you'll record your experiences as voice notes, creating yourself a memory of what happened. Plus, more solo games that offer us that little bit more, including Thousand Year Old Vampire, Electric Bastionland, Ironsworn, Disciples of Shadow and Bone (and it is said this way around!) and Artefact.
Finally, we chat about the intricacies of Where's Wally turned detective game MicroMacro: Crime City, the release of Wingspan on Switch, and the news about Slay the Spire.
There's plenty packed into this episode, so pop your headphones on and get listening – enjoy!
It's the last day of school and we're doing the equivalent of creating Christmas cards with too much glue and glitter. We chat about issue 50 of the magazine, preview a few features, and talk about some of the mos

We’re pleased to announce Virtual Tabletop Gaming Live. In place of our cancelled Tabletop Gaming Live show at Alexandra Palace this year, we’re going to be celebrating all things gaming with an online show instead. Virtual Tabletop Gaming will be two days of curated video content from your favourite games designers, publishers and content creators on our website.
The show will take place on our website from Saturday 26th September and run through to Monday 28th September.
See exclusive videos from your favourite designers, publishers, and online creators as well as hobby tips, interviews and more. Plus, money off offers on your favourite games, and even a virtual goody bag. We think it’s the next best thing to actually being there.
Unlike a lot of virtual shows, we’re not asking you to sign up to a number of services, (just our own if you'd like to receive a virtual goody bag!), or to dedicate a huge amount of energy to ‘being there while not being there’. Instead, we just want to give everyone the chance to relax and enjoy what the hobby has to offer. Over the weekend you can drop in and see what’s being premiered on the main stage, or catch up with video content on the various other stages of the show – finding the part of the hobby that appeals to you the most. You’ll have to be there for the weekend though, as once it’s over, it’s gone.
We’ll start teasing the line ups for each day over the coming weeks – so sign up to our newsletter to get the news first! To get signed up, register for an account here and subscribe to the newsletter.
Want to be involved? Whether you’re a content creator who wants to share their view on the hobby, or you’ve got a game you want to show off, get in touch! We’re here to support the community and the hobby and would love to celebrate your creations. If you want to be part of the show, email the editor at: [email protected] and we’ll go from there.Visit us online: https://www.tabletopgaming.co.uk/

We speak to Nick Smith of the Ludoquist about the store, reopening under the COVID-19 restrictions, the price of games these days, and getting people into gaming. We also get two top fives: one of Nick's recommendations for people who don't usually play games, and his personal top five.
We had some connection issues early on in the interview, meaning there is a small break as Nick moves from a delightful and sunny courtyard, to an equally as delightful living room.
Facts:
* There's 1.086 millions people in Birmingham, so with Nick's vague numbers, he's probably right about Croydon and the surrounding areas being comparable.
We take a wander through the latest issue of Tabletop Gaming Magazine, talk about gods in RPG (such as Dungeons & Dragons Mythic Odysseys of Theros and Souldbound), simple games, Massive Darkness 2 and our All The Jahres Special.

If you’re hankering for a quest – issue 40 of Tabletop Gaming is for you. Like a slightly over excited tutorial NPC, we’re offering you so many ways to slake your wanderlust. ?
In the first instance that’s the cover story. We talk to Isaac Childres about Frosthaven and ask whether it was the equivalent of the “tricky second album”. Isaac takes us on a tour of the frosty far reaches of the game, and asks us to work together to build hope in this desolate place. He also hinted at a few of the classes that might currently be under wraps (but not in a spoilery way). To find out what we found you, you’ll need to pick up the mag.
Dungeon Degenerates: Hand of Doom is a neon-punk world from the mind of Sean Aaberg. Aside from the obviously incredibly vivid art, the game offers us a chance to talk about whether games should be read at their mechanics alone, or whether they should be read as fiction. Oh, and if you’re a subscriber, your special subs cover offers a lurid look into that world.
But that’s not all – with a Minecraft game hitting our shelves we talk about making a procedurally generated world work on our tabletops with Ulrich Blum, the game's designer.

Where can you go to play games? How can you make new likeminded friends at a local get-together? Jonny Crawford speaks to founders and members of gaming clubs about becoming part of the community, welcoming newcomers and overcoming stereotypes. Meanwhile, Sushi Go! creator Phil Walker-Harding talks about the use of games to educate. This is the fourth and final part of the History of Tabletop Gaming mini-series.
In the penultimate entry in our four-part look at the history of gaming, host Jonny Crawford speaks to former Games Workshop designer and River Horse founder Alessio Cavatore, as well as Ghostbusters: The Board Game II head designer Vincent Pritchard, about why miniatures have a massive appeal and their transition from wargames to board games.
As our four-part look at the history of gaming continues, Jonny Crawford is joined by Sushi Go! creator Phil Walker-Harding to consider how traditional playing cards evolved into the modern card games we enjoy today.
In the first episode of our four-part series, Jonny Crawford begins our journey through the history of gaming with an in-depth look at one of the oldest games in existence, chess.
