Three years ago, on September 5th, Chief Warrant Officer 5 Joseph Rosamond was the pilot in command of a California Air National Guard CH-47 that rescued hundreds of trapped campers in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The campers were cut off and surrounded by wildfires. The actions of CW5 Rosamond, his crew, and a fellow UH-60 Blackhawk crew risked their lives to land and recover 242 individuals in the Mammoth Pools. Despite local, state, and Homeland Security officials advising against them attempting a rescue they pressed forward, knowing they might not return. For their actions, the 7 crew members were awarded Distinguished Flying Crosses.
