The Bake Down is back but we bring you a little something special this year: we will be heading back to 2013 and reviewing The Great British Bake Off season 4 (or season 2 in the US.) We'll be reviewing each episode, week by week, and looking back at the brilliant bakes brough to us by the class of 2013. For this introductory episode, Bake Down host Sarah will be talking to Mr Custardgate himself, Howard Middleton and discussing applications, filming in the tent and being recognised as a TV star. Full episodes of The Bake Down will be brought to you every week, with Sarah, Howard and, of course, Jane Beedle and Dan Beasley-Harling to give their views on the 2013 season, ten years on.

WHAT. AN. EPISODE. If you're after brilliant baking, handshakes everywhere you look and drama until the final moments - then you simply couldn't have asked for more than what was served up in the tent for a memorable semi-final.
As always the founder of Bake With A Legend Josh Landy was joined by Bake Off legends Howard Middleton, Jane Beedle and Dan Beasley Harling to reflect on how our remaining bakers fared and ultimately in an episode worthy of a final, it was almost unfair that anyone had to leave.

The arrival of 'free from' week brought with it more cries of 'all about survival' as our final five bakers entered the tent, with identical dairy free ice cream sandwiches, vegan sausage rolls and a gluten free celebration cake all on the agenda for those that wished to advance to a semi-final.
As always the founder of Bake With A Legend Josh Landy was joined by Bake Off legends Howard Middleton, Jane Beedle and Dan Beasley Harling to reflect on how our remaining bakers fared in this quarter-final.

Welcome back fans of the Bake Down, it's a pleasure to have you with us once again, as we react to Caramel Week, which included a sharing sized caramel tart and most excitingly of all - a chance to see how to make your very own Twix bar - except they couldn't mention it was a Twix bar, we just had to listen to Matt refer to how it may usually belong in a golden wrapper!
As always the founder of Bake With A Legend Josh Landy is joined by Bake Off legends Howard Middleton, Jane Beedle and Dan Beasley Harling to reflect on how our half dozen remaining bakers fared as we near the business end of the series.

Roll up, roll up, get your innuendo bingo cards ready after perhaps the most innuendo laden episode in Great British Bake Off History as our seven bakers were tasked with making some perfect pastry to keep themselves in contention of the ultimate prize.
Founder of Bake With A Legend Josh Landy is joined by Bake Off legends Howard Middleton, Jane Beedle and Dan Beasley Harling to reflect on some lovely chouxnuts, baklava and terrine pies, as seven became six in the hallowed tent.

Once again the founder of Bake With A Legend Josh Landy is joined by Bake Off legends Howard Middleton, Jane Beedle and Dan Beasley Harling to reflect on the first ever German week, where it should have been home advantage for Jurgen!
So excited were we about German week, that we've decided to run a FREE webinar this Sunday, 24th October, at 3.30pm UK where Dan is going to be teaching Eisenbahner - railway biscuits! These traditional German biscuits are made to resemble railway sleepers, which is where they get their unusual name. They are surprisingly simple to make, and can be easily adapted to your choice of flavours! You need to register here if you want to join us and tell everyone else who you think will love it!
This week, the bakers in the tent were asked to make some German biscuits to kick off this week with the signature, whilst even pronouncing the technical challenge - Prinzregententorte - was going to be difficult enough never mind making a two tiered yeast leavened cake for a showstopper! What a week it was and Jane felt, the most enjoyable of the series so far and you'll hear how positive she was!
Remember here at Bake With A Legend we are still having great fun hosting regular online baking classes every weekend. We currently have 25 virtual classes on sale now for you to enjoy and learn from the comfort of your own home including lots of festive classes. They are great fun and if you use the code PODCAST at checkout you'll get 10% off, whilst gift vouchers and bundle packs are also available. Please check out our online baking classes on our website. Once again the founder of Bake With A Legend Josh Landy is joined by Bake Off legends Howard Middleton, Jane Beedle and Dan Beasley Harling to reflect on dessert week, where we ended up with as many disasters as we did successes.
Could our bakers make a promising Pavlova and what about their stupendous sticky toffee puddings... surely none of them would forget to put their flour... oh. Never mind. For the showstopper, they were asked to make brilliant jaconde desserts with varying success.
Remember here at Bake With A Legend is that we are still having great fun hosting regular online baking classes every weekend. Once again the founder of Bake With A Legend Josh Landy is joined by Bake Off legends Howard Middleton, Jane Beedle and Dan Beasley Harling to reflect on bread week, where Lizzie was on hand with more surreal animal related stories to keep us entertained!
Could our bakers make a stunning Focaccia and what about their ciabatta breadsticks - one so deserving the bread master himself Paul Hollywood extended his hand for a rare handshake! For the showstopper, they were asked to make something brilliant out of milk bread and boy did we see some impressive bakes!

Once again the founder of Bake With A Legend Josh Landy is joined by Bake Off legends Howard Middleton, Jane Beedle and Dan Beasley Harling to reflect on biscuit week as Series 12 continued with a superb episode of baking entertainment.
We saw some wonderful Brandy Snaps created before the bakers were asked to make some Jammie Dodgers, albeit it seemed they weren't allowed to call them that! Childhood toys were then turned into showstoppers some breathtaking results!

The wait is no more, as Paul, Prue, Matt and Noel were back on our screens to kick us off with what we're certain will be ten joyous weeks of baking. Fair to say we had a real mix of baking going on in the tent, but from 19 year old Freya to 70 year old Maggie, there's a wonderful cross section of British society represented and everyone will no doubt soon have their favourites - we all do.
Founder of Bake With A Legend Josh Landy is joined by Bake Off legends Howard Middleton, Jane Beedle and Dan Beasley Harling to reflect on cake week as Series 12 got off to a flyer with some brilliant personalities as the episode saw great humour and all the drama we love to see in the Tent.
Here at Bake With A Legend is that not only are we still having great fun hosting regular online baking classes every weekend, but this year we are going to be teaching a virtual class of either the signature or the technical challenge EVERY SUNDAY at 5pm UK following the episode, starting with Jane teaching Malt Loaf on Sunday. Happy New Year! Just when you thought it was over for us until Summer 2021, it wasn't... as Bake Off was back with two special episodes over Christmas and New Year. Josh, Howard and Jane couldn't let the episodes pass without comment, so got together to reflect on the second special episode which aired in the UK on Sunday 3rd January 2021.
It saw a return to the tent for Helena, Rahul, Henry and Nancy and despite none of the quad being strangers to the tent, nerves were clearly there as they sought to impress once more making crumble, Bao buns and a showstopper to celebrate their 21st birthdays. You'll hear what the trio thought about the episode and a bizarre anecdote from Howard about Rahul that we can't quite believe we've never heard before.
We are continuing to have great fun hosting online baking classes for fans from all around the world and more classes go on sale every week. Whether you'd like to learn how to make a Craquelin with Dan, Charlotte Royal with Ian or Pork Pie with Howard, you can check out our latest online baking classes on our website. Well, what can you say! Ten fantastic episodes, 30 tremendous bakes, 12 contestants whittled down to three for this weeks final and one crowned the Bake Off Champion. I hope you’ve enjoyed watching this series as much as we’ve enjoyed making this podcast for you to listen to. We'll have one more episode next week which will be a recording from our live webinar this Saturday.
Joining Jane, Howard and Josh this week was former finalist Ian Cumming to reflect on a final we all struggled to call right until the end.
Whilst we are sad the series is coming to an end, we’re going to be celebrating with a special online event this Saturday, 28th November and we hope you'll join us.
Dan Beasley Harling will be leading a free webinar teaching you how to make the perfect scone with chantilly cream, so you can bake along with us for around an hour at 7.30pm to give you a little flavour of what a class with us entails and then at 8.45pm, Dan will be joined by Howard and Jane where we’ll all reflect on the 2020 Series of Bake Off and we'll take your questions. You do have to register if you want to attend that but it's absolutely free - click here to sign up if you’d like to attend.

We had all sorts of mess, plenty of perfection and ultimately one baker who we thought would excel at patisserie heading home at the penultimate hurdle as we saw our final four made Savarin, Cornucopia and a Cube Cake. We digest a week of mixed fortunes as two bakers excelled towards the final which seems hard to call.
Whilst we are sad the series is coming to an end, we’re going to be celebrating with a special online event on Saturday 28th November 2020 and we hope you'll join us.

The Quarter-Final saw a familiar theme as dessert week returned as five became four in the Great British Bake Off Tent.
We saw the bakers creating 12 mini cheesecakes for the signature before being largely unsuccessful in making two sussex ponds for the technical challenge, which were, in the main, ironically pond like, by the time they were being judged. The showstopper was the undoubted highlight which saw some incredible bakes, utilising jelly in such beautiful ways, several of which were worthy of a final never mind a quarter-final.
Josh, Jane, Howard and Ian Cumming recorded this podcast remotely via Zoom. We'd like your questions and comments to keep us going. Hit us up at [email protected] and we'll read out your comments on the upcoming episodes.

The 7th week of Bake Off 2020 left Howard feeling a little uncertain as to quite how '1980s' it was really was, but after making a quiche, some finger doughnuts and an ice cream cake, we can't deny we were in need of eating something sweet as we watched Hermine become the seventh different star baker in as many weeks.
We saw Laura forget to turn on a button which almost saw her bid farewell to the tent, but in the end it was Lottie's cassette tape that wasn't functioning properly as the star baker from just a week ago was given her marching orders, leaving us with five bakers for our quarter-final.

The newly themed Japanese Week started off with a challenge to make eight soft delicious steamed buns... and considering they were asked to make buns, there weren't enough bun related jokes really. Prue wanted them to melt in the mouth whilst Paul was more concerned that they were exactly to his taste as he mistakenly took the tent for a restaurant.
Then it was a case of turning to a Macha crepe cake for the technical challenge, where Paul warned us that the layers had to be very thin to ensure enough mixture to get 11 layers... and guess what, not everyone got enough layers whilst Dave got confused between a crescent and a circle for his decoration. Meanwhile, Laura claimed she may as well eat grass, such was her disdain for macha.
For the showstopper, the bakers were told to make a Kawaii cake (we also had to google it). They were told to make it cute and by and large they did. Well Hermine didn't necessarily, but there you go. She survived, whilst poor old Mark made a cake so dry Paul almost called it unedible, but by telling us it was nearly unedible, he basically told us it was really and then Mark was sent packing, whilst Lottie became the sixth different contestant to be star baker in six weeks.

Pastry Week started off with a challenge to make Cornish Pasties, which put the pressure on poor Marc, because he lives in Cornwall, so therefore apparently his was expected to be much better than everyone else's! Paul even asked how many crimps they should have, but then wasn't quite sure himself! The technical challenge saw them tasked with making an eclair and for all we know Linda is still working up her 864th batch of choux pastry. Finally the showstopper saw the bakers make a caged tart before Paul and Prue handed over a 5th different star baker of the series whilst we were left with only seven bakers in the tent.
Josh, Jane and Howard were joined by the brilliant Dan Beasley Harling once more - as we recorded this podcast remotely via Zoom. We'd like your questions and comments to keep us going in the new series. Hit us up at [email protected] and we'll read out your comments on the upcoming episodes.

Chocolate Week started off with a challenge to make Chocolate Brownies, which all of the bakers did a fantastic job on, we then moved on to making a babka, which confused the hell out of Lottie, who is probably still trying to fit it in to the tin she was using. We ended on a celebratory chocolate showstopper which had more tenuous back stories than anyone could ever ask for.

Bread Week! The one where everyone is scared of Paul Hollywood even more than usual. This week the 10 remaining bakers had to make a Soda Bread, Rainbow Bagels and a bread showstopper commemorating something they are grateful for and we delve right into the episode to breakdown exactly what happened.

Biscuit Week! Fancy Florentines, Mouthwatering Macaroons and a beautiful 3D biscuit table setting to represent a memorable meal the bakers had in the past, were the name of the game this week, as the 11 members of the Bake Off biosphere battled out to make it through to Week 3.
After the fallen upside down pineapple cakes trauma, Dave excelled with a wonderful week that looks set to make him a contender to go the distance, whilst there was definitely a tough decision to be had as to who would head home.

2020 is saved ladies and gentlemen! The greatest TV show to ever grace our proud nation here in the UK, is back on our screens for an 11th series and despite the challenges, didn't they do a marvellous job! We've got 12 brand new bakers to get to know and even a new presenter in Matt Lucas who got off to a flyer looking like he'd been there for years.
The traditional opening week of Cake didn't disappoint, there seems to be some tremendous talent on show and well, some less so judging from the opening week, but nevertheless we could have watched them make a cupcake and we'd have been happy, so glad are we that the show is back.

Here at Bake With A Legend, we were absolutely thrilled when it was confirmed that The Great British Bake Off is coming back for another series - even the difficulties of COVID19 couldn't stop Paul Hollywood and the gang returning to the tent in a special biosphere to keep the show as 'normal' as possible. We can't wait to see it!
Founder of Bake With A Legend Josh Landy is joined by Bake Off legend Howard Middleton to review all the latest news and gossip that we could find about the new series as we look ahead to a very special season of the show.
Here at Bake With A Legend, we're slowly returning to our 'in person' events, but we are having great fun hosting regular online baking classes every weekend with the likes of Andrew Smyth, Dan Beasley Harling, Karen Wright and of course star of the podcast Howard Middleton himself, teaching all sorts of wonderful bakes with new classes being added all the time. Whilst we loved the final, it's tinged with sadness as GBBO is over for another year. What a wonderful bunch of bakers overall and a well deserved champion now reigns. We look back on the series, Jane's memories of being in the final, and of course at this week in particular, with ultimate chocolate cakes, twice baked stilton soufflés and then some extraordinary deceptive feasts in the form of picnic baskets for us to analyse.

The Semi-Final lived up to expectation with a highly enjoyable week in the tent as one of our bakers left at what Paul Hollywood said is the worst time to leave the show. Paul, I think you'll find that's actually the first week, but we get what you mean. We saw a signature of Domed Tartlets, a technical asking for a delicious looking Gateau St. Honore before some extraordinary sugar glass displays with edible depictions of something they hold dear to them for the showstopper.
If you liked the look of the Gateau St. Honore in this weeks episode, why not come and learn how to make one with Howard on the 28th December 2019 here in London. Click here for more information and you can even use the code THEBAKEDOWN to get 10% off.

The Quarter-Final was upon us this week as the traditionally challenging pastry week saw us lose a firm favourite from the tent. It all started off with a savoury tarte tatin, moved onto a thin sheet of brik pastry for a difficult technical and ended with a vertical pie showstopper, with varying degrees of success.

The six remaining hopefuls are faced with Festival week as the tent starts by getting their buns out to the delight of Paul who can't resist getting his hand out - twice. Then it's off to Italy for some fried sicilian cassatelle, before we end with Malaysian inspired Kek Lapis Sarawak. No, we didn't know either.
Howard and Jane offer their tips on getting a selfie with a Bake Off Star whilst we chat about the consistency of the judging this series.

The seven remaining contestants had dessert week to contend with in the tent before one bombe showstopper didn't quite go off as planned and now just six bakers remain. We look back at an enjoyable week in the tent with a little bit of Bake Off history being repeated for good measure.
Also, Howard finally reveals all about his cousins Kate and Pippa whilst Jane recalls the wonders of being offered too much cake when on a Waterstones book tour.

This week we were all thrown back nearly 100 years to the 1920s for yet another new GBBO theme to debut in series 10.
Four custard pies, 18 beignets soufflés and one prohibition cake later, we said goodbye to not one but two bakers this week as finally the double departure came forth.
Jane and Howard weren’t entirely sure the right bakers left or that we need new themes in GBBO but both found common ground on the back of our self raising selfie story, believing that when it comes to judging cake competitions around the country, spiralizers as prizes remain the best way forward.

This week, in somewhat of a revelation, we see Bake Off contestants use dairy to bake goods. No, we couldn't believe it either to be honest, but having watched the episode and done the podcast, we're nearly over the shock. We chat dairy, both cultured and uncultured, maids of honour, mishti and Henry's three round balls. Surely, two people go this week, won't they? Oh, right.
As ever there's a self raising selfie story as Howard is spotted running late in Sheffield, whilst Howard and Jane also answer your questions - we find out who eats all the leftover food and how much time you get to relax on filming days.

Nothing screams Bake Off quite like Vegetarian Burgers so we were delighted to get our teeth stuck into reviewing Bread week. We soon realised that Henry's tie wasn't a one off as we watched the bakers make a tear and share bake, before having a look at their pert white burger baps and some seriously impressive scoring for the showstoppers.
There was a great self raising selfie story, plenty of tips on baking bread, whilst Howard and Jane also answer your questions - we find out why the bakers have to wear the same clothes on both days and whether Howard and Jane think everyone gets a fair edit.

We're talking the biscuit this week as we digest the week that was in the tent. One of the hardest themes, we talk tough challenges and asking other bakers for help when you're in need. We bid farewell to a young man who charmed us even with such a short time in the tent whilst the bookies early favourite shows us why she could be the one to watch in 2019.
Howard and Jane also answer your questions - we find out who does the washing up and which other Bake Off Stars around the world have been adding Howard on Facebook.

It's back, it's finally back! 10 months after Rahul was given the 2018 Bake Off crown, Bake With A Legend founder Josh Landy, sits down with former contestants Howard Middleton and Jane Beedle to reflect on not only the week that was in the tent (furry gardens and all) but also to reminisce over the many hilarious stories from their time in the tent. It's a fascinating insight into what goes on when you're on the other side of the camera.
