Welcome to the cloister a podcast of conversations on monasticism and spiritual formation.
The podcast The Cloister – A podcast from Monastic Retreats is created by Monastic Retreats. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).
I just wanted to share with you today a little update on recent developments here at Monastic retreats.
Some of you may be aware that just before Easter we made the decision to close our social media accounts. I have been reading and listening to lots of research recently on the effect of social media on our minds and our society and although I have loved being able to engage with people via both instagram and Facebook I feel my time could be better spent focussing on other areas of our ministry.
Stepping away from social media doesn’t however mean that our work and ministry here at Monastic Retreats is coming to a close. Spending time not creating social media content will enable me to focus on improving Our website (which has just had a redesign), our monthly emails which will be expanded, this our fortnightly podcast and also our Advent and Lent devotionals.
Later this year we will also be releasing our liturgical journal ‘Ora et Labora’ for the liturgical year 25/26, instead of producing seasonal editions as we have this year, we will be producing one beautiful year long edition.
So our work here in helping monasteries promote their retreats is still very much continuing and alongside that producing spiritual formation resources to encourage you in your work with the Lord.
Thank you for being part of our community here and if you haven’t already can I encourage you to sign up for our regular emails via the sign up form at our website.

Abbot Robert from Ampleforth Abbey explores one of the most profound questions in the Gospel of John: "Do you want to be healed?" (John 5:6)
What does this question mean for us today? How do we respond to the invitation of healing, both physically and spiritually? Abbot Robert offers deep insights into Jesus’ compassionate challenge to our hearts and lives, inviting us to reflect on our own desires for transformation and wholeness.
Tune in to this thought-provoking conversation and dive deeper into what it means to truly embrace healing in Christ.
Starting from Psalm 118 verse 143 ‘Though anguish and distress have found me, your commands are my delight’, this home retreat will consider briefly the experience of Elijah, Jeremiah, the suffering servant, Job, Jonah, Tobit, the author of Psalm 87 and then focus particularly on the experience of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Everyone has hopes and dreams and these sometimes come to fulfilment sometimes not. Jesus said the mouth speaks of what fills the heart, so what fills your heart as we start 2025? How sound is your heart? What is it really looking for, something or someone? We will explore some of this together in this Home Retreat provided by our friends at Ampleforth Abbey.

With current world events and a growing sense of helplessness in the midst of global turmoil, this series again from our friends at Glenstal Abbey is both timely and important. Today Father Christopher starts this series by considering how the act of prayer itself is a raising of the mind and heart to God.
The Jesus Prayer is a simple prayer
“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
The tradition of the Jesus Prayer goes back to the “prayer of the mind,” recommended by the ancient monks of the Egyptian desert. It was continued as the “prayer of the heart” in Byzantine Hesychasm, a monastic system that seeks to achieve divine quietness.
There are many ways to approach this ancient and simple form of prayer. Here Canon Robin Morrison shares a little about the prayer and then leads us in a guided practice. We pray it is a practice that blesses you.
