Snuggle up with your favorite chicken lovers for a special poultry-themed reading of 'Twas The Night Before Chickmas with Meyer Hatchery. Happy Holidays from our coop to yours!
'Twas the first night of Chickmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that Meyer Hatchery soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds;
While visions of baby chicks danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just turned off our phones for a long winter's nap,
When out in the coop there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the chicken scratched snow,
Gave a luster of midday to the coop down below,
When what to my wondering eyes did appear,
But a Meyer Hatchery box full of things I hold dear,
With a little fluffy driver so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment he must be St. Chick.
More rapid than ducklings his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:
"Now, Quail eggs! now, Guineas! now Frizzle Easter Eggers!
On, Cochins! On, Leghorns! On, Polish or Olive Eggers!
To the top of the Barn! to the top of the wall!
Now fly away! Fly away! Fly away all!"
As geese that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;
So up to the coop-top the coursers they flew
With the sleigh full of eggs, and St. Chickmas too—

Let’s take a Meyer Moment to talk about the social structure of a chicken flock. You’ve heard of the pecking order, but beyond being the top bird or being last on the rung, there is a unique social structure within each and every flock. The social structure is delicate and is ever-changing based on multiple factors.
Chickens are social “flock” animals and we recommend a successful flock have at least 3 birds. Having chicken friends doesn’t necessarily mean that the chickens will be “friendly” to each other, as it all depends on their social structure.

I’m your host Kendra and on the show today you’ll hear how an education in child development and love of food came together to drive Stacie Billis to become a food editor, cookbook author, and host to one of the top 20 food podcasts on Apple.

With her passion for food still burning, she decided if she wasn’t going to be in the kitchen cooking professionally she could at least engage with parents and families around food content. After having kids herself she realized it was time to be in the kitchen, but not as a chef, as a mom with the purpose of feeding her family. Making a career pivot from education and research in children’s media she found her place in food media, writing cookbooks and launching the podcast Didn’t I Just Feed You, with her co-Host Meghan Splawn.
Their podcast exudes the fact that food truly is a connector, whether you’re making it, enjoying it, or talking about it. We hope the embargo will be resolved this week, but the government can extend it again. Please stand beside us in voicing your concerns!
Today we’re talking about combs. No, not the kind you keep in your back pocket (is that still a thing?), we’re talking about chicken combs! Combs come in a variety of colors, sizes, and shapes but what exactly are they? As defined by the Chicken Encyclopedia by Gail Damerow - A comb is a fleshy crownlike protrusion on top of a chicken’s head, usually more prominent in males than females. Most breeds have bright red combs, however, Sumatras have purplish combs and Silkie combs are so dark they’re nearly black.
