Hi, I’m Roz, and welcome to The Cut Flower Podcast! In today's episode, I’ll be answering your most burning questions about seasonal flower gardening, particularly focusing on autumn tasks. From bulb planting to how to care for your dahlias as winter approaches, we’re covering it all. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting, I’ve got practical advice to help you get the most out of your flower patch.
This episode dives into some of the most common questions I receive from my membership groups and courses, including how to handle bulbs like Narcissi and Tulips during autumn. I break down why October is ideal for planting Narcissi, but why it’s crucial to wait until November or December to plant Tulips to avoid diseases like tulip fire. We also talk about planting hardy annuals like Larkspur and Cornflowers to overwinter, offering practical tips on how to ensure they thrive when spring comes.
We also explore the hot topic of dahlia care. Should you lift or leave them in the ground? I explain the factors that go into making that decision, including your climate and soil type. You’ll learn about mulching techniques to protect dahlias and other tender plants from the frost, as well as the best ways to store tubers if you decide to lift them.
Finally, I answer your questions about roses, manure, and the benefits of sowing green manures like Phacelia. Whether you’re wondering if it’s too late to plant perennials or how to best prepare your garden for winter, this episode is packed with useful advice for gardeners of all experience levels.

In this delightful short episode of *The Cutflower Podcast*, Roz shares her passion for growing, harvesting, and arranging seasonally grown British blooms. Today, she dives into the 10 tips for establishing your very own cutting patch, drawing from her expertise featured in chapter three of the *Seed to Vase* book.
Key Takeaways:
1. Size Doesn't Matter: Your cutting patch doesn't need to be vast. Roz suggests starting with a raised bed of about nine square meters, providing ample space for an array of blooms, from Sweet Peas to Cosmos.
2. No Need to Speak Latin: Don't be overwhelmed by botanical jargon. Roz simplifies the distinction between annuals, perennials, and biennials, emphasising the joy of growing for delight and sheer abundance.
3. Grow What You Love: The heart of your cutting patch should reflect your personal taste and memories. Whether it's the flowers from your wedding bouquet or those mentioned in literature, cultivating what you love is key.
4. Choose Your Position: Shelter your patch from the wind, a flower gardener's adversary. Consider using trellis or hedging to protect your blooms, and Roz suggests using foliage plants like eucalyptus for added windbreak.
5. Keep Things Turning Round: Rotate your plants to avoid the buildup of pests and diseases. This practice becomes crucial as your flower garden expands.
6. Make Sure You Have Some Support: Supporting your plants is essential. From Harris fencing to pea netting and canes, having the right support in place before you need it is a top tip.
7. Get Down and Dirty: Understand your soil by investing in a pH and moisture meter. Regardless of your soil type, adding compost or nutrition is crucial as your plants grow from seed to cutting.
8. Look After Your Babies: Even without a greenhouse, you can start small with a warm winter sill or a small cold frame. Roz encourages beginners to start small and gradually expand.
9. A Hoe and a Spade: Continuously sow and grow. Many seeds are sown directly into the soil, taking around 12 weeks from seed to plant. Get out there and enjoy the process!

Welcome to The Cutflower Podcast, In this solo session with Roz Chandler, we're diving into the world of hardy annuals. Roz explains the distinction between hardy and half-hardy annuals – hardy ones can endure winter frost, while half-hardy varieties need protection from the cold. She suggests focusing on mid to late August for half-hardy annuals. At Field Gate Flowers, they begin by sowing these in a tunnel and then transplant outside in September, allowing roots to establish before winter.
Covering different flower options, Roz shares her favourites: **Ammi Visnaga**, a hardy filler with lovely seed heads; **Calendulas** like Indian Prince, Snow Princess, and Pink Surprise; the striking **Cornflowers** including Centaurea cyanus (blackball) and Blue Diadem; the intriguing **Daucus carota** which is hardy biennial; and the elegant white lace **Orlaya grandiflora**. Some delicate hardy annuals like **Larkspur**, **Cerinthe**, **Antirrhinum** and **Californian Poppies** are best grown under cover for the winter.
Sweet peas also make an appearance! Roz advises starting them in November or December under cover or doing a spring sowing. Sweet peas might seem delicate, but they're actually hardy and can tolerate temperatures down to minus five. They can be sown in autumn, strengthened in spring, and sown again. Don't miss the episode where Roz chats with sweet pea expert Roger Parsons for more insights.
Roz emphasises the importance of planning your flower year, considering when to sow and whether to sow directly, under cover, or for spring. She teases the upcoming release of the 2024 Cut Flower Planter on Amazon. Your feedback is appreciated, so make sure to rate and review the podcast. Until next time, happy gardening and flower growing!

In this episode, Roz Chandler introduces her special guest, Sue McGlasson, who began her flower farming journey during lockdown. Sue started by growing seeds in small plastic boxes in her garden and got addicted to gardening and growing plants. She eventually acquired an allotment plot and expanded her flower-growing venture with the help of courses on flower farming.
Sue and her family then made a significant leap by purchasing a property with a walled garden and a Victorian greenhouse. They plan to convert the property into a flower farm with various possibilities, including flower subscriptions, DIY buckets, selling to florists, workshops, and even pick-your-own apple events and cider-making.
Sue draws inspiration from Roz Chandler, her fellow flower farmers on the "Best Bunch" group, and several growers she follows on Instagram. She mentions that she is more visually inclined than a reader and prefers to get inspiration from social media platforms.
For new flower farmers, Sue advises them to keep dreaming big and to take every opportunity that comes their way. She encourages them to follow their passion for flower farming and enjoy the journey of creating something beautiful and fulfilling.

A chapter from the book Seed to Vase- a collection of stories
Alice Hare joined me on my seed to vase course. This is a chapter from the book about her story.
SEED TO VASE - A journey that involved so much more than growing flowers.
Participants came together from all corners of the UK, USA and Europe to join an 8 month course on growing cut flowers. From homes in many acres in Scotland, to apartment blocks in London with rented raised beds, they all had a common love of flowers.
But these people found so much more than that. This book details some of their lives and experiences as they learned not only how to grow cut flowers, but a great deal about themselves and one another. They found a community in which they all found inspiration and confidence, regardless of their initial reasons for joining the course.
Seed to Vase includes stories of bereavement, sadness, joy and laughter at a time when the world was facing restrictions in so many ways due to Covid-19. This was a time to rediscover nature and the simple joys in life.
Roz is the founder of Field Gate Flowers and is passionate about growing, harvesting and arranging seasonally-grown British blooms.

Herbs generally refers to the leafy green or flowering parts of a plant (either fresh or dried), while spices are usually dried and produced from other parts of the plant, including seeds, bark, roots and fruits. They have a variety of uses including culinary, medicinal, and in some cases, spiritual. Roz explains why as a flower farmer she grows a large selection of them - mints, sage, borage, rosemary, and lemon balm. Easy to grow herbs add that something little extra to flower arrangements.
