The Deadpod

Dead Show/podcast for 11/4/22

95 min • 24 november 2022

I know that I've previously said how enamored I am of the music the Grateful Dead created in the Fall of 1973, specifically during November. Luckily for us, there is an exceptional set that has yet to be released commercially nor here on the Deadpod that I have the privilege of featuring this week. This occurred on November 1, 1973 at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

While we only have the second set of this wonderful performance, I think you'll agree it is a much-needed respite from the noise and confusion of the current season. The band reaches peaks of expression here on selections such as 'Playin' In the Band', 'He's Gone' and 'Truckin'. The style is jazz forward and experimental. The fact that Billy is alone on percussion probably allows him to be more supple and driving at times, especially during 'He's Gone'.

I recommend time and space to savor this one, I think you'll find its worth it..
