In the early winter months of 1982, the dead body of 8 year old Vishal Mehrotra was found in the haunting woods of the UK. This was 7 months after Vishal had mysteriously vanished on the day of the Royal Wedding between Princess Diana and Prince Charles. And then, even though his remains had been found, the case reached a screeching halt that only ended in 2019 when two men noticed an obvious trail of clues nobody had bothered to investigate. This is the story of that one boy, that one day and that one trail of clues. Welcome to part 2 of the story of Vishal Mehrotra.

On the 29th of July 1981, 750 million people from across the world were watching a wedding from their television screens. More than 2 million people stood on the streets of London all the way from the Royal Residence at Clarence House to St. Paul’s Cathedral to witness what seemed like a match made by God himself– the people’s princess, Lady Diana Spencer was marrying the heir to the world’s most influential monarchies, Prince Charles III. As all of Britain celebrated and people took to the streets to catch a glimpse of the $110 million wedding procession, an 8 year old Indian boy mysteriously vanished blocks away from the wedding of the century and was never seen alive again. This is the story of that one day and that one boy. This is the story of Vishal Mehrotra.
Two powerful brothers, Ponty and Hardeep Chadha, turned a family empire into a battleground on a fateful November day in 2012. A dispute over a sprawling farmhouse in Delhi spiraled into a violent shootout, leaving both brothers dead and the nation stunned. Behind the facade of wealth and success lay a story of betrayal, ambition, and unchecked greed that tore a dynasty apart. How did a sibling rivalry descend into bloodshed, shaking the foundations of one of India’s most influential families?

Murder shakes communities and multiple murders break them. When the house next door, home to a happy and loving family, turns into the site of multiple brutal murders, hope and happiness are hard to find in the homes that surround it. This was what happened to a small, tight knit community of homes in Pune in 1994 when 7 people were found brutally murdered inside Flat No 6 of Himanshu Apartments. This is the story of that one day and those 7 people. This is the story of the Rathi family.

We’ve all heard crazy cases of disappearances. Oftentimes, young women disappear, like Sneha Phillip or young children disappear like Geeta and Sanjay Chopra at the hands of Ranga and Billa. Unfortunately, disappearances aren’t uncommon. What is uncommon is for an entire family to vanish into thin air, leaving behind no trace at all. What happens when 3 generations of a family all disappear as if they never existed? What happens is that Scotland Yard spirals into one of the most complex manhunts in UK history, traveling to 4 countries and collecting 4000 documents to solve a case that drove the world insane. This is the story of that manhunt, this is the story of the disappearance of the Chohan family.

Usually thunder awakens the residents of Bandra at night, a popular suburb of Bombay. Something louder awoke its residents on the night of 12th October. A roar. A deafening roar, of a lion heaving his last breath. Just a few blocks away from me, the king of bandra’s political scene was being rushed to the Lilavati hospital, a final ditch attempt to save the 66 year old political veteran. Many called him Baba. Thousands gathered outside Lilavati, praying for Baba to make it through. I stood outside the hospital not knowing what was happening, not knowing what Baba meant to these people, not knowing what the eerie tension presaged. This is the story of the Baba of Bandra, this is the story of Bollywood, Bishnoi and Baba Siddique.
THIS IS AN ONGOING INVESTIGATION

If you’re the heartbreaker’s side of the table, you probably consider yourself the luckier one of the two parties but that’s not always the truth. You never truly know what the heartbroken is capable of doing when pushed to the edge. This is a story that exemplifies that dynamic– one where the heartbreaker seemed too quick to move on and the heartbroken, hell bent on making sure he doesn’t. This is a story that shook London in the late 2000s. This is the story of Lucky Cheema and Lakhvir Singh.

Air hostess Geetika Sharma's tragic death shocked the nation, and the investigation that followed uncovered a web of alleged harassment by powerful politician Gopal Kanda. What pushed a young woman with a promising career to take such a drastic step? Was it truly suicide, or was there more behind the story? In this video, we unravel the chilling details of the case that gripped the country, but with each revelation, new questions arise. Watch till the end to discover the twists and turns of this scandal—will justice ever be fully served, or does the truth remain buried?
This is the story of India's most notorious, gruesome, and sinister crime that involved kidnapping, cannibalism, rape, pedophilia, and serial murder all at once.
Update: According to NDTV, "The high court said the prosecution had failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt for Moninder Panther. Koli, however, continues to be a life-term prisoner for his conviction in one case."
The serial killings took place at Moninder Pandher's home in Nithari area of Uttar Pradesh's Noida between 2005 and 2006, according to the CBI. When children start disappearing in the village of Nithari in Noida, local parents have to band together to force police to look for their children. When police finally listen and take action, they find a suspicious coincidence; all the missing kids were last seen in the same 100-meter area, later dubbed the “black hole” by locals. But what was this “black hole,” that seemed to suck up its victims, never to be seen again? Was someone behind the disappearances? Or was it something entirely different?

It’s the voice of all people, victims and criminals alike. It’s a pillar that differentiates right from wrong in the goal of creating a society as close to ideal as possible. A justice system is all of those things not because of the system itself but in large part because of the people who make up the system— honest lawyers and honest judges. And so when a reputed judge himself is at the center of not one murder but 4, the country watches in shock and awe. That is what was happening in Assam in the late 1960s. This is the story of that one judge and his beautiful family. This is the story of the Rajkhowa Murders.

“Cabin crew, prepare for takeoff.” As soon as the pilot utters those words, you completely submit yourself to them. You know for a fact you’re in their hands, literary and figuratively. An anxiety and excitement grip; being 30,000ft in the air does that. But deep down, you want to land. You want to touch earth again. You want to walk. The passengers of Indian Airlines IC 814 were no different. When the captain of that flight uttered “Cabin crew, prepare for takeoff,” from Kathmandu Airport’s tarmac, the 178 passengers must’ve felt the same anxiety, and excitement. They must’ve wanted to walk. But they did not. Of those 178 passengers, 5 were terrorists, committed to hijacking this Airbus A300. This is the story of the airplane that never landed in Delhi. This is the story of the Kandahar Hijacking.

Murder is a horrendous violation of a fundamental right— a right to live. A right to experience the joys of being alive, whether those be falling in love, getting your dream job or something as simple as eating your favorite meal. Murder strips you of existence. But some murders and some murderers go down in history not just because they stripped someone of that right but because of how they stripped someone of that right. Because of how many people they stripped of that right. One such murderer was roaming the dark and quiet highways of Southern India in the late 2000s. This is the story of those highways, of that murderer. This is the story of Psycho Shankar.

Millions around the world wait at bus stops every single day, heading to school, work, or back home. And for some reason, those bus stops feel safe. The tiny bench covered by the tiny canopy is a piece of sanctuary on an otherwise mammoth and alien road. On one such bus stop in Norway, in the early morning hours of February 3rd 2010, waited a young Pakistani woman, as she had countless mornings in the past. But little did she know, this morning and this bus stop was going to be different. Under that bus stop’s canopy, was going to be the last moment of peace she would ever know. This is the story of that morning, that bus stop, that woman. This is the story of Faiza Ashraf.

Sweltering temperatures across the world make us all want to run away to an island paradise for refuge, some nice tropical breeze and dips in the ocean water. Women are beautiful, women are strong. Women can be each other’s biggest champion. But women can also be each other’s harshest critics; jealous and vindictive. From the mother-in-law versus bahu trope, to the trope of 2 pretty girls who can never be friends, female equations are complex, marred with the sexism society has taught us. This is the universe of every young girl’s childhood and it was the universe of the girls living on tiny Vancouver Island in British Columbia in the fall of 1997. It was a universe that was about to boil over into a tale of brutal murder. This is the story of Reena Virk.

Titu Toran Singh was born in a village near Agra on December 12th, 1983. At age 2, his first words were: I am not from here. He insisted he was actually a man named Suresh, who was murdered in his past life. Over the years, he began making outlandish claims like owning a radio shop in Agra and having a wife named Uma. Finally in 1986 his parents put his claims to the test by visiting Agra where he said his shop was. They found it…Suresh Radio. And 41 years later, we found Titu. This is FIRST EVER podcast interview. Find out in this episode if Titu was lying, or if he was actually reborn for revenge.

Imagine you live in Perfect World. I don’t mean 'a' perfect world. I mean Perfect World, the video game. Slowly, the more you play the game, the more its adventurous valleys and roles take you into an alternate world, and the easier it becomes for you to forget the very real, imperfect world around you. This scenario, as dystopian as it may sound, was the very real state of mind of a young, Bangladeshi-Canadian boy unable to reconcile Perfect World with his world. This is the story of the Toronto quadruple murder. This is the story of Menhaz Zaman.

Mountains have a rapport for mysteries and hauntings. It’s as if all the world’s eeriness finds refuge in these hill stations. Folk tales of spirits and serial killers run amok. But there is one hill station in India in particular which is infamous for mishaps and mysteries. Every year, there is some story about a haunting, kidnapping and even murder taking place here. This is the story of a small hilly town in Maharashtra where kids don’t step out after sundown, this is the story of the mysterious murder in Matheran.

[RECAST] Beginning next week, we will be releasing the new slate of Desi Crime episodes. We spent the last month researching and writing new scripts, hence been uploading video versions of older episodes. Can't wait for y'all to watch some of the upcoming bangers. Stay crazy, stay desi!
When we cover these cases, the ones that hit the hardest are the ones where we can clearly see there was deep rooted and long lasting injustice. Cases where those responsible for protecting us, our parents, our schools, our police, are the ones who are the perpetrators of this injustice. If you feel this way too, this case is your worst nightmare come to life; a nightmare one 14 year old girl had to live through 31 years ago. This is a case that shook India to its core. This is the story of Ruchika Girhotra.

[RECAST EPISODE] The case that we have for you today is as much about the crime as it is about what happened following the crime. It is about death as much as it is about life. It is about morality and ethics and the society we seek to create as much as it is about punishment and sentences and justice. A case that will come to be discussed for generations now in every Indian class on the law. This is the story of a 25 year old nurse and the one night that changed it all. This is the story of Aruna Shanbaug.

[RECAST EPISODE] This is a bonus episode with video. Love triangles…a concept in existence for as long as love itself. But love triangles, unlike love, are controversial. They’re viewed as scandalous, calculated, and deceptive. Perhaps that is because we never hear of happy, successful love triangles. We hear of ones where jealousy and possessiveness take over, only to end in a tale of disaster. This is the story of one such disastrous love triangle that kept India on its toes. This is the story of Neeraj Grover, Maria Susairaj, and Lt. Emile Jerome Mathew.

In part 1 of the story of Rajneeshpuram, you heard the story of Bhagwan Rajneesh’s life and his move to the US to a sleepy little town outside of Oregon. You heard the story of his unprecedented town takeover and the all out culture war he now found himself in the middle of. By the year 1983, the residents of Rajneeshpuram and Antelope were armed against each other and more dangerous than ever before. As this culture war would unfold, crimes would unfold too, making the plot more sinister and macabre. And to hear this story unfold, welcome back to part 2 of the story of Osho.

Imagine you’re living in a small middle town in the state of Oregon in 1981. Living in a ranching town with just about 50 people, you were most probably white. Life was quiet and life was simple but life was good for you there. Until one day, something seemed different. Cars and people, including Rolls Royces show up at your small sleepy town. And the people seem different— dressed in reddish orange robes, they chant music, hold ceremonial events, even have the roads around them closed off, and from there things only get weirder and scarier and more illegal. This is the story of one such sleepy American town and the one man who changed it all. This is the story of Osho.

On the midnight of 23rd November 1993, a family’s massacre jolted Shubham Apartments in the Dum Dum region of Kolkata. When the cops arrived the scene of crime, they realized there was one survivor, 16 year old Sajal Barui. Soon, that notion changed. According to India’s Juvenile Justice Act, a person under the age of 18 is viewed as a minor, and is tried as such when they commit a crime. But there are a few rare cases that blur the moral distinction between a child and an adult, a minor versus a mature person, a kid as opposed to a killer. On the midnight of 23rd November 1993, those lines were blurred forever.

Sometimes, when Indians move to foreign countries, they migrate with dreams in their heart, stepping away from everything they’ve ever known only to be able to live a better life. This is exactly what Lovely and Mathew Varugese thought they were doing when they moved from India to the United States in 1990. But 2 decades later, every dream they ever came with was going to come crashing down the night their son disappeared. This is the story of that night. This is the story of Pravin Varughese.

[RECAST EPISODE] This episode was uploaded last year, but in light of the recent documentary, we are releasing it as an extra episode that sheds light on the aspects of the case that the documentary did not.
Justice delayed is justice denied. This is a phrase embedded within the very being of every judicial system in the world. Or, at least it should be. Yet the essence of this phrase is sometimes hard to live by. Sometimes comes before us a case so shocking yet so convoluted that not years but decades pass by without a shred of justice. Such is the case of a 21 year old nun from Kerala. A woman whose brutal death in 1992 remained unsolved till December of 2020. This is the story of Sister Abhaya.

Take a second and think about your mom. You probably smiled a little just now. Everyone’s mom is their life’s singlehanded superhero. Countless pieces of song, film and poetry have been dedicated to moms; it’s a relationship like no other and all dads seem to know they come a close second. So what happens when that very same mom, the one you’d take or fire a bullet for, spirals down into a path of sinister crime, and decides to take you along with her? This is the story of one such mother whose life of crime and lack of remorse turned her 2 daughters into the most infamous criminals the country had ever seen. This is the story of the Gavit Sisters.

Home is supposed to be your safe haven; your bed, the thing you crave coming back to at the end of a long day. Your parents, the people you’d take or fire a bullet for. Between the four walls of a home and around the people you love, exists most of your life. That was all true for 13 year old Aarushi. Little did she know, though, on the night of 15th May, in that very home, those very people were about to conspire to commit murder…her murder. And they were going to succeed, making sure she never saw the light of another day. This is the story of what really went down inside house L-32 in Sector 25, Noida on the night of 15th May 2008. This is the story of Aarushi Talwar.

This is the story of the man who created India’s first crime show: every week he was on television screens around the nation narrating the exploits of the most devious criminals of the time, until January 10, 2000, when he found himself at the center of a criminal investigation. The difference was, he was no longer researching or hosting this case, but instead living it – in the eyes of the police, the man that covers murder for a living, had just covered up the murder of his own wife. This is the story of how the host of India’s Most Wanted, became one of the most Wanted Men in india. This is the story of Suhaib Ilyasi.

Where do you feel the safest in the world? For most of us, the safest place on Earth will be within the four corners of our home. It is the certainty of intimately knowing your surroundings, with its many variables, that makes us feel safe at home. I know that the ringing of the doorbell at 10 PM is the guard asking me to move my car, or tapping sounds are from a pipe I have procrastinated to get fixed. The chances of something going wrong in my own home is minimal, almost impossible. That’s why when Yashomati Parekh left her daughter home alone in Kolkata, she wasn’t expecting to return to a scene that changed the city forever. This is the story behind India’s first execution post Independence. This is the story of Hetal Parekh.

Over the last decade, India has been home to a slew of unexpected, scandalous and devastating suicides with sinister back stories. These suicides, those of Jiya Khan, Pratyusha Banjerjee, Sushant Singh Rajput, Tunisha Sharma and more, weren’t just stories of people who gave up on their lives. They were stories of crime, corruption, power, politics and our country’s criminal underbelly that led these young people to death. Today, we’re covering one such case, a suicide, that shook the country 11 years ago. This is the case of Geetika Sharma and Gopal Goyal Kanda. The cases you usually hear on true crime podcasts, the ones we usually cover, have a clear perpetrator and a clear victim. One person is in the wrong, the obvious suspect, the “villain” in the case. One person is innocent, the one who has been wronged and whose justice we long for. But then come cases that flip on their head our conception of wrong or right, good or evil. Today’s story is of one such case. It is a case of a woman, abused, tormented and emotionally tortured until she snapped. This is the story of Dr. Chamari Liyanage.
1 bath tub, 3 dead bodies. A marriage in turmoil. A feverish lover. The house on 20 Grass Tree Close, Bridgeman Downs, Queensland Australia holds all the answers. On 22 April 2003, the police are summoned to decrypt this mystery. Clues lay scattered around the residence. But less physical evidence awaits them. The people evidence comes first. A debaucherous father, a complicit mother, and the vendetta of their enemies in Fiji stand in contrast to the wrath of one man – Max Sica. Who killed Neelma Singh, Kunal Singh and Sidhi Singh? Who is behind Queensland’s largest every investigation, that some till date question, if it lead to a satisfactory answer? Find out, in part 2 of The Singh Sica Triple Murder.

Home. A word that denotes haven, tranquility and family, but it often transforms into a hell for many. Houses are fascinating, take the cement structure of a home that hides away tales and tragedies, musings and maladies, all while standing upright and resolute. From the outside, a house can cast a certain image and connotations. A tin-roofed hut in a slum for example connotes suffering, ailment, a sick child being nursed by an even sicker mother, wreaking sewage. On the other hand, a grand mansion symbolizes prosperity, wealth, grand dinners and children running around the fireplace and a solemn happiness. But that’s not what makes houses fascinating, it is the juxtaposition they offer that does. That slum could very well have a kid studying endlessly under a light bulb while her mother smiles away as she cooks a simple stew. Happiness can easily be found regardless of the exterior. Vis a vis the grand mansion that exudes stature and class can hide behind its walls dark secrets. One such mansion stood on 20 Grass Tree Close, Bridgeman Downs, Queensland Australia. This is the story of its inhabitants and their dark secrets. This is the story of the Singh and Sica family.

Usually, when we cover cases on this podcast, we talk of the stories of a singular victim. A woman raped, a man murdered, a child kidnapped. And that one victim’s story is enough to enrage us; to make us feel sorrow and anger. But what happens when crime organizes itself across a whole city, engulfing more than 500 victims, destroying lives and scarring generations? This is the story of one such crime that has somehow been erased from our common psyche; this is the story of the Ajmer sex scandal.

“She said that she wanted a break from the relationship. I asked her if I should at least hope that she will come back. She said no because she wanted to stay single for some time and that might change things for her. I could not accept that.” Parse through any teenage highschooler’s diary, and words like these are all too easy to find. Breaks vs break ups, situationships vs relationships, boyfriend vs ex-boyfriend, these duels define adolescence. We’ve all been through some version of it. But as we retrospect, we cringe at that bygone era; of course, we are older now. Now we’re too mature to put up with these silly little dramas. The same insecurities do not haunt us any more? Or do they? Deep down in our psyche, are we still that insecure teenage kid? Some folks just never grow up. And those words you just heard weren’t of a teenager, but a grown man. Sometimes, not growing up, not getting out of the shell of puberty, can have adverse consequences in your adulthood: for you, and for your partner. This is the story of a man still trapped in a teenage drama of his own making, this is the story of Anuj Kumar.

Love triangles…a concept in existence for as long as love itself. But love triangles, unlike love, are controversial. They’re viewed as scandalous, calculated, and deceptive. Perhaps that is because we never hear of happy, successful love triangles. We hear of ones where jealousy, competition, ego and possessiveness take over, only to end in a tale of crime and disaster. This is the story of one such disastrous love triangle that kept India on its toes and destroyed three lives. This is the story of Neeraj Grover, Maria Susairaj, and Lt. Emile Jerome Mathew.

Imagine living in a beautiful, peaceful city in India. Life is going well. You have friends, a city you call home, you go to the movies on the weekends, maybe a family lunch date every now and then. Until, one day, you find the movie halls empty, people in their houses before sundown, terror in the eyes of every passerby, and fear in the hearts of thousands furious to lock their doors and windows before going to bed. This was what happened to the beautiful and peaceful city of Pune in 1976 because of a murderous rampage that did not seem to end. This is the story of the four men behind that horrifying murderous rampage. This is the story of the Joshi-Abhyankar serial murders.

“Don’t take candies from strangers.” How simple a teaching; how elegant. But how difficult for a child to resist a sugary delight; an alpenlibe or melody offered to you for free that to before dinner. Which 6 year old could say no? Had this lesson not been inscribed in our head, we too could’ve fallen for this scheme. If you now think how stupid some kids might be to fall prey to this modus operandi of kidnapping, keep in mind, you’re the same person that once upon a time believed in Santa Claus and tooth fairies. This is the story of the man that bitterly exploited the sweet tooth of children, this is the story of Delhi’s Ravinder Kumar.

In last week’s episode, we covered the case of Adnan Syed and Hae Min Lee, a young couple madly in love until Hae disappears and Adnan is put under the scanner for her disappearance and subsequent murder. But I had left you with a lot of unanswered questions. Is Adnan guilty or not? For a lot of unsettling answers and even more unsettling questions, welcome back for Part 2 of the Murder of Hae Min Lee.

You know that feeling of being young and experiencing your first love? Heightened emotions, the constant need to see them yet feeling your heart flutter when you do, that inability to go to sleep or eat, the hiding from your parents, the first touching of your hands, the first kiss, you get the picture. I know a lot of you listening will relate. There are few experiences as universal as your first love. But what happens when your first love disappears and suddenly, the world turns to look at you, wondering whether or not you could have possibly made them vanish? What happens when, then, your first love re-appears…but not alive anymore and suddenly, the world turns to look at you, wondering if you could be a cold blooded murderer? This is the story of one such young love story that captured the imagination of a nation. This is the story of Hae Min Lee and Adnan Syed.

One cardiovascular aberration after another. Stroke after stroke. Heart attacks galore in the Thomas household. 1 anomaly is understandable. But 4, that’s a bit much. Especially when the patients are in their 40s and 50s. And then appears out of thin air, a will, that allegedly of Tom Thomas. Almost as if it was conjured by someone who would benefit from it. Rojo Thomas believed that that ‘someone’ was none other than the newly appointed matriarch of the Thomas household – Jolly Amma Joseph. But why would Jolly, a beloved member of the pink poonamattam palace be involved in this charade? Was this a plot against her? Or, was everything a plot by her long before anyone even laid a suspicious eye on her? Welcome back, to part 2 of the jarring story of Jolly Joseph.
What’s in a name? Astrologers would argue 2 syllables might entail your entire destiny, such is the power of a name. But what if your life is the exact opposite of what your name suggests. Our protagonist today bears such a name. Her name is Jolly. Jolly Joseph. One of her neighbors went on record to say “Jolly seemed like the perfect woman to us.” If you didn’t know any more about this, you’d assume that praising a person in a true crime podcast implies that they are the victim, or soon to be victim. Here you have a pretty girl, everyone loves her, and her name means. But I urge you to keep aside your preconceived notions for this episode. This is the story that till date shakes Kerelaites to their core; this is the story of Jolly Amma Joseph.

Did you know woman is raped every 16 minutes in India? That adds up to 90 rapes a day, 630 rapes in a week and 2,700 rapes in a month. These are the official government figures from the year 2019. But most of these rapes never make it to the front page of your newspapers or the screens of your TV; they get lost among thousand other news pieces. But occasionally comes across a case that shocks a country to its core; a case that brings millions to the street in a fight for justice. In 2012, we all heard of a rape like that. This is the story of how India’s daughter was raped in the country’s capital and left to die; this is the story of Jyoti Singh.

Every film industry seems to have a dark underbelly. It seems to have countless unexplained murders, mysterious disappearances and ties to high profile criminal activity. Bollywood is the same way. This is the story of one such crime that shook Bollywood, the story of a family, massacred. This is the story of Laila Khan.

Latifa was onboard a 100 ft yacht Nostromo. The ship had set sail from Muscat in Oman on February 24, 2018. The objective was to transport princess Latifa and her friend Tina to the shores of Goa, a coastal town in India. But although the seafaring voyage was meant to last a few weeks, Latifa’s journey had started long before; in fact decades before. This was merely the final leg of a lifelong plot to escape her fathers fangs. What was this ‘very very bad’ situation that Latifa had found herself in, and did Latifa manage to escape or did her father’s clasp finally catch up with her. Find out, in part 2 of Latifa: The Missing Princess of Dubai.

This is the story of Dubai’s missing royal; this is the story of Princess Latifa.
The best way to break a spell of awkward silence with your friends, is to ask this simple question: what would you give up for a billion dollars? That’s billion with a ‘b’. And this question takes many forms: would you give up your arms, or your legs, or vision or your relationship, and the toughest of them all, would you give up your dog for a billion dollars? This is a simple rhetorical tool to instill thoughtful humorous banter with your buddies, but what happens when a rhetorical tool is no longer a game? What happens when this question becomes a very real dilemma in somebody’s life?
A princess in Dubai faced this dilemma. Not posed by her friends, but by her very life’s circumstances. The question was: would you give up your freedom for a billion dollars?

Murder cases on Desi Crime usually have a clear perpetrator and a clear victim. But sometimes crimes are not so cut-and-dry. Some cases can flip our perceptions of what is wrong and what is right; what is good and what is evil. The story of Chamari Liyanage dabbles in that gray-area. It\'s a story of a woman; abused, tormented, and emotionally tortured until one day … she snaps. But the strange part is, she doesn\'t quite remember how it happened.
In Part I of the Sheena Bora Murder, we told you the story of a seemingly broken family the wounds of which had led to murder. A famous Mumbai police cop had received a tip of a missing woman, a body had been buried and the name of a murderer had emerged. We had successfully covered the who-dun-it part of this mystery. Today, we’re covering the why-dun-it. Welcome to part II of the Sheena Bora Murder.

A commonality across all families is struggle, hard times, broken relationships, and dirty laundry we keep to ourselves. Regardless, we love our families. Whether it’s those horrible teenage years where you can’t stop arguing with your parents or whether you were blessed with a sibling completely your opposite or whether your mother hates her mother-in-law, these problems are common and universal across time and culture. But some families have secrets deeper and darker than these. Some families have secrets that leave lives destroyed. Families that give credence to the saying, “with a family like this, who needs enemies?”. This is the story of one such family- the Bora family. This is the Sheena Bora murder case.

A murder involves a murderer, the murdered, a murder weapon and more often than not, a motive. This template is true for most cases covered on our podcast, and on any true crime podcast for that matter. But where there is a rule, there is an exception. The case we have for you today is one such exception. This case has a murder, but no murder weapon, no motive, and no murderer. This is the story of a 22 year old girl that shook the city of Philadelphia, this is the story of Nadia Malik.

When in 1999, the body of a beautiful 34 year old model and celebrity bartender was found lying on the floor of the fancy Tamarind Court restaurant in Mehrauli in New Delhi, with a clear bullet wound to her head, her family and the cops thought this was an open and shut case. This was a party of 300 some people, after all. Someone has to have seen someone, someone will come forward. There should’ve been no dearth of evidence in the case at all. And 7 years after the crime, the verdict was out. The Times of India printed the verdict on the front page of their February 22’ 2006 paper. “No one killed Jessica”. This is the story of that night in 1999 when Jessica Lal was killed, yet somehow nobody killed her. This is the story of Jessica Lal.
Any “Travel to Australia” advertisement on television displays stills of the Great Barrier Reef and pearl white beaches. Volleyball, tank tops, scantily clothed and sizzlingly tanned bodies can be found frolicking around. But on 22nd October 2018, a body was found in one such Australian beach. The difference was, this wasn’t a tanned person frolicking around. In fact, this body did not appear to move at all. This is the story of the day that redefined the \'beach\' for residents of Queensland, Australia; this is the story of Toyah Cordingley.

Every now and then, in this country of a booming billion, a crime occurs that captures the attention of the nation. Every now and then, one crime is what everyone can talk about – from conversations over the 2 rupee tea at the roadside chai wala to conversations over a sugar infused diabetes inducing drink at starbucks: one story cuts across caste, class, and creed. In 2021, that story was the Madanapalle Double Murder, and 2022 just found its story as well. This is the story of what went down, allegedly, in a small apartment in Mehrauli’s Chatarpur area; this is the story of Shraddha Walkar and Aftab Amin Poonawala.

So far, we’ve told you the story of a seemingly loving and happy couple, Nancy and Amarjit, with two babies, living in a house in London. Until all 5 members of the family, 3 of whom are adults, just vanish like they never existed. Everyone said it seemed like the family had voluntarily left. Until Onkar Verma, Nancy’s brother, decided to go on a wild hunt for his family because he knew something was wrong. Onkar’s hunt, though, seemed to only be leading to more questions than answers. But we’ll give you the answers too— and for that, welcome back to the second part of the Disappearance of the Chohan Family.

The answer: Scotland Yard spirals into one of the most complex manhunts in UK history, travelling to 4 countries and collecting 4000 documents to solve a case that drove the world insane. This is the story of that manhunt, this is the story of the disappearance of the Chohan family.
Disturbing memories, scrawled in cursive books meant for kindergarteners: \"My mother made my sister strip in the bathroom... My mother thinks I am impotent. She wanted to see me develop a relationship. This is why she used to send a maid servant to my room to excite me.\" The inscriptions, incongruous with the whimsical books in which they were found. The mother in question is Aarati De, and everything that\'s happened over the course of decades at house number 3 on Robinson Street can be traced back to her. What seemed on the surface to be a psychopath on the loose morphs into a far more complicated web. Who killed Debjani, where is Aarati, and what happened to Partho? Countless true crime stories begin with a family. More specifically, a family gone awry -- hate, jealousy, and vengeance seeping in and tearing apart the bonds of blood. But this story is different. This isn\'t the case of a family that doesn\'t love one another; this is the case of a family that loves one another far too much. What does that mean? This is the story where you find out. It\'s a story weaving together suicide, murder, incest, and cannibalism, all into one unbelievable plot. This is the story of Kolkata\'s House of Horror.

The case that we have for you today is as much about the crime as what happened next, about death as much as life. It is about morality as much as ethics, as much about the society we seek to create as much as the punishment it doles out to those who threaten it. This case will come to be discussed by generations of Indian law students. It is the story of a 25-year-old nurse just seeking to make a difference, help those in need, and live a normal, happy life. And then, on the night of 27th November 1973, the actions of one man changed this woman’s life forever and pushed her into a 42-year-long nightmare. This is the story of a case that moved India and moved the world. This is the story of Aruna Shanbaug.
Today\'s episode comes all the way from Nepal, where a young girl had big dreams like any other. Her doting family moved across cities and states, all for the sake of their daughter’s promising future, until that young girl got a phone call that changed her life forever. Soon after, her parents got a phone call too -- a call that shattered the life they had built and all the happiness within it. This is the story of that young girl. This is the story of Khyati Shreshtha.
‘How I’m looking? Beautiful, sexy, or hot?’ One could have easily mistaken these words to be uttered by a Kim Kardashian, a Kendal Jenner or some other young woman on Instagram seeking fame, if only it was not for the broken English. The broken English, how I’m looking, not how am I looking, hides a story much deeper and significant than an appeal for likes on social media. The minor grammatical difference underscores a world altogether different than the one of tiktok stars. These words, as salacious and incorrectly framed as they maybe, mark a struggle if one chooses to read between the lines. These were the very words that gave a woman in Pakistan a new, a life she had always desired. But the very same words were also responsible for snatching away her life from her. This is the story of that woman from Pakistan who simply yearned for a better life; this is the story of Qandeel Baloch.
When we cover these cases, the ones that hit the hardest are those with the clearest injustice: deep-rooted, disturbing, and plain to see. Cases where the very ones tasked with righting injustice — our parents, our schools, our police — are the ones who perpetrate it. It makes all of our blood boil to hear of lives destroyed, families torn apart, futures snatched over trivialities. If you feel this way too, this case is your worst nightmare come to life: a nightmare one 14-year-old girl had to live through 32 years ago. This is a case that shook India to its core. This is the story of Ruchika Girhotra.
The perfect marriage, a goal for so many of us. To find that one person that they can spend their life with. Seldom do people find such a partner, but when they do, two worlds meet in remarkable union. What happens when that one person is taken away from you? What happens when that oh-so-perfect partner is no more? Well, this is one such story. The story of union that was simply never meant to be; this is the story of Mitesh and Jessica Patel.
2020 was a weird and unfortunate year for everyone. Even for those of us who didn’t suffer the loss of someone close to us, death seemed like it was all around. It was unprecedented that we found ourselves in the middle of a global pandemic, locked inside our houses for months on end. By the time June 2020 rolled around with the pandemic in full swing, Bollywood had already lost two major film stars in Irfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor when suddenly, on the 14th of June, the news of another death flashed on every Indian’s TV screen and this one took the country by storm. 34 year old Bollywood superstar Sushant Singh Rajput found dead in his apartment. The reason for his death? Suicide by hanging. But was it? If you’ve wondered the answer to this question for 3 years now, you’ve come to the right place. This is the story of the mysterious death of Sushant Singh Rajput.
When you visit an Indian restaurant, from the god awfully long menu, there is one genre of food item that always stands out— us desis are in fact known for this around the world. The tandoor. From tandoori naan to tandoori chicken, and hell, tandoori paneer for all our vegetarian listeners out there, the tandoor is an integral part of any brown kid’s childhood. But this seemingly innocent cylindrical clay oven found itself embroiled in a case that captured and haunted Delhities for years; this cylindrical clay oven stood at the center of a love story, a hate story and an impeccable investigation conducted by the Delhi police in the late 90s. This is the story of that clay over; this is the story of the Tandoor murder.
On September 8, 2017, a 7-year-old child was found dead inside a famous school in Gurugram. Soon it became obvious that his death was no accident. The deep cut on his neck and the knife found at the scene pointed to a sinister plot. Until recently, the Haryana police paraded their murderer and declared the case closed. But did they accuse the right person? Did bus conductor Ashok Kumar murder Pradyuman after a failed attempt at sexually assaulting the child? Or was this story far more complicated than it seemed?
Welcome to part 2 of The Mysterious Gurugram School Murder.
On September 8 2017, a loving father drove his two kids—his 7-year-old son and his 11-year-old daughter— to school just like any other morning. He smiled and waved goodbye to his children just before 8:00am, and barely 20 minutes later, his life had changed forever. His world had come crashing down in front of his eyes. This is the story of his 7-year-old child. This is the story of Pradyuman Thakur.
Zainab is on the run. Her siblings are terrified. Shafia is plotting a mass murder. But how did a plan to murder Zainab and possibly Rona develop into a plan to murder Sahar and Geeti too? How did they bring Zainab back from the shelter? What went down inside that Nissan Sentra just moments before it drowned, killing 4 women? And what was it all for? Find out in part 3 of The Shafia Family Murders.
A brother, a mother and father are grieving their daughters\' deaths. It appears that Zainab, Sahar, and Geeti died in a bizarre accident; their black nissan was found drowned in a Lock in Kingston, Canada. But police questioning and investigation unfurls this accident more; suggesting inklings of something way more sinister. Good the grieving family be an act? Do Hamed, Shafia and Tooba know more than they are telling? Find out in Pt.2 of The Desi Crime Podcast.
This episode wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing work of Macleans journalists whose reporting enabled us to unfurl this investigation for you. - https://www.macleans.ca/society/the-shafia-case-is-finished-finally/amp/

We are naturally drawn to stories with a Romeo and Juliet archetype — forbidden love breaking through the shackles of society to ignite the sparks of passion. But let’s not forget how their Shakespearean saga ends: with their tragic death. Our protagonists today, Mithu and Jassi, bear all the same hallmarks. As passionate as their love was, it faced an even more passionate fervor to repress them. This is the story of tradition forcing love toward death. Welcome to Part 2 of this story!
The 29th of May looked like it would pass uneventfully until shocking news shook India: armed assailants had shot and killed Punjabi cultural icon and hip-hop star Sidhu Moosewala. The 28-year-old died after being shot 24 times. But this is no simple story of senseless violence. This is a story of revenge, politics, gangs, guns, and Khalistan. This is the story of Sidhu Moosewala, a young man whose music took a country by storm.

On the 11th of September 2001, the world fundamentally changed. From the moment 19 Al-Qaeda terrorists boarded four American aircrafts, and one by one, planned to crash them into four of the United State’s most significant buildings, death and distruction was on the way. Working in these buildings on that morning and living in these cities on the 11th of September were hundreds of thousands of Indians, one of whom was Sneha Philip. A beautiful 31 year old doctor, Sneha was living in and walking the streets of New York city the morning of the attacks. And then…she vanished. This is the story of Sneha Philip. | Intro by ghostfml

Almost two years ago, in June of 2020, as the world was protesting the unlawful death of George Floyd caused by a cop who stepped on his neck for over 9 minutes, India was fighting its own case of police brutality. We brought that case to you two years ago and since then, new, harrowing developments in the case have led us to bring to you an update episode. This episode goes to the countless people who are hurt or lose their life at the hands of those meant to protect them. This week’s case is one that, in our opinion, does not get enough limelight. As the world focused its attention on the Sheena Bora murder case in 2015, another heartbreaking and jaw dropping double murder somehow came to the forefront but was forgotten relatively quickly. This is the story of an immensely talented woman whose life, on the outside, seemed perfect and one that most people down the same career path would envy. This is the story of an Indian artist who gained fame and international recognition for the work she was doing, until one day, her life changed for the worse.
