“Cabin crew, prepare for takeoff.” As soon as the pilot utters those words, you completely submit yourself to them. You know for a fact you’re in their hands, literary and figuratively. An anxiety and excitement grip; being 30,000ft in the air does that. But deep down, you want to land. You want to touch earth again. You want to walk. The passengers of Indian Airlines IC 814 were no different. When the captain of that flight uttered “Cabin crew, prepare for takeoff,” from Kathmandu Airport’s tarmac, the 178 passengers must’ve felt the same anxiety, and excitement. They must’ve wanted to walk. But they did not. Of those 178 passengers, 5 were terrorists, committed to hijacking this Airbus A300. This is the story of the airplane that never landed in Delhi. This is the story of the Kandahar Hijacking.

Titu Toran Singh was born in a village near Agra on December 12th, 1983. At age 2, his first words were: I am not from here. He insisted he was actually a man named Suresh, who was murdered in his past life. Over the years, he began making outlandish claims like owning a radio shop in Agra and having a wife named Uma. Finally in 1986 his parents put his claims to the test by visiting Agra where he said his shop was. They found it…Suresh Radio. And 41 years later, we found Titu. [RECAST] On May 18th, an email was sent out to the faculty of Shiv Nadar University at 1:20 pm, which had a link to a confession video. This email was sent to 11 people on the campus. The recipients included a student and some authorities. It was sent by a second year sociology student named Anuj Kumar. The email was titled, ‘S#c#de Note.’ This case shocked students across Indian Universities. Is it that easy to bring a gun inside a college campus? Why did Anuj Send that video? Why was Sneha killed? On the midnight of 23rd November 1993, a family’s massacre jolted Shubham Apartments in the Dum Dum region of Kolkata. When the cops arrived the scene of crime, they realized there was one survivor, 16 year old Sajal Barui. Soon, that notion changed. According to India’s Juvenile Justice Act, a person under the age of 18 is viewed as a minor, and is tried as such when they commit a crime. But there are a few rare cases that blur the moral distinction between a child and an adult, a minor versus a mature person, a kid as opposed to a killer. On the midnight of 23rd November 1993, those lines were blurred forever.

That June of 1997, Border was also playing inside one of Delhi’s most famous cinema halls– The Uphaar Grand. By the time the song played and got over though, 59 people had died in the cinema. Justice delayed is justice denied. This is a phrase embedded within the very being of every judicial system in the world. Or, at least it should be. Yet the essence of this phrase is sometimes hard to live by. Sometimes comes before us a case so shocking yet so convoluted that not years but decades pass by without a shred of justice. Such is the case of a 21 year old nun from Kerala. A woman whose brutal death in 1992 remained unsolved till December of 2020. This is the story of Sister Abhaya.

The cases you usually hear on true crime podcasts, the ones we usually cover, have a clear perpetrator and a clear victim. One person is in the wrong, the obvious suspect, the “villain” in the case. One person is innocent, the one who has been wronged and whose justice we long for. But then come cases that flip on their head our conception of wrong or right, good or evil. Today’s story is of one such case. It is a case of a woman, abused, tormented and emotionally tortured until she snapped. This is the story of Dr. Chamari Liyanage.

Home. A word that denotes haven, tranquility and family, but it often transforms into a hell for many. Houses are fascinating, take the cement structure of a home that hides away tales and tragedies, musings and maladies, all while standing upright and resolute. From the outside, a house can cast a certain image and connotations. A tin-roofed hut in a slum for example connotes suffering, ailment, a sick child being nursed by an even sicker mother, wreaking sewage. On the other hand, a grand mansion symbolizes prosperity, wealth, grand dinners and children running around the fireplace and a solemn happiness. But that’s not what makes houses fascinating, it is the juxtaposition they offer that does. That slum could very well have a kid studying endlessly under a light bulb while her mother smiles away as she cooks a simple stew. Happiness can easily be found regardless of the exterior. Vis a vis the grand mansion that exudes stature and class can hide behind its walls dark secrets. One such mansion stood on 20 Grass Tree Close, Bridgeman Downs, Queensland Australia. Usually, when we cover cases on this podcast, we talk of the stories of a singular victim. A woman raped, a man murdered, a child kidnapped. And that one victim’s story is enough to enrage us; to make us feel sorrow and anger. But what happens when crime organizes itself across a whole city, engulfing more than 500 victims, destroying lives and scarring generations? “She said that she wanted a break from the relationship. I asked her if I should at least hope that she will come back. She said no because she wanted to stay single for some time and that might change things for her. I could not accept that.” Parse through any teenage highschooler’s diary, and words like these are all too easy to find. Breaks vs break ups, situationships vs relationships, boyfriend vs ex-boyfriend, these duels define adolescence. We’ve all been through some version of it. But as we retrospect, we cringe at that bygone era; of course, we are older now. Now we’re too mature to put up with these silly little dramas. The same insecurities do not haunt us any more? Or do they? Deep down in our psyche, are we still that insecure teenage kid? Some folks just never grow up. And those words you just heard weren’t of a teenager, but a grown man. Sometimes, not growing up, not getting out of the shell of puberty, can have adverse consequences in your adulthood: for you, and for your partner. This is the story of a man still trapped in a teenage drama of his own making, this is the story of Anuj Kumar.

Love triangles…a concept in existence for as long as love itself. But love triangles, unlike love, are controversial. They’re viewed as scandalous, calculated, and deceptive. Perhaps that is because we never hear of happy, successful love triangles. We hear of ones where jealousy, competition, ego and possessiveness take over, only to end in a tale of crime and disaster. This is the story of one such disastrous love triangle that kept India on its toes and destroyed three lives. This is the story of Neeraj Grover, Maria Susairaj, and Lt. Emile Jerome Mathew.

Imagine living in a beautiful, peaceful city in India. Life is going well. You have friends, a city you call home, you go to the movies on the weekends, maybe a family lunch date every now and then. Until, one day, you find the movie halls empty, people in their houses before sundown, terror in the eyes of every passerby, and fear in the hearts of thousands furious to lock their doors and windows before going to bed. This was what happened to the beautiful and peaceful city of Pune in 1976 because of a murderous rampage that did not seem to end. This is the story of the four men behind that horrifying murderous rampage. This is the story of the Joshi-Abhyankar serial murders.

You know that feeling of being young and experiencing your first love? Did you know woman is raped every 16 minutes in India? That adds up to 90 rapes a day, 630 rapes in a week and 2,700 rapes in a month. These are the official government figures from the year 2019. But most of these rapes never make it to the front page of your newspapers or the screens of your TV; they get lost among thousand other news pieces. But occasionally comes across a case that shocks a country to its core; a case that brings millions to the street in a fight for justice. In 2012, we all heard of a rape like that. This is the story of Dubai’s missing royal; this is the story of Princess Latifa.

The best way to break a spell of awkward silence with your friends, is to ask this simple question: what would you give up for a billion dollars? That’s billion with a ‘b’. And this question takes many forms: would you give up your arms, or your legs, or vision or your relationship, and the toughest of them all, would you give up your dog for a billion dollars? This is a simple rhetorical tool to instill thoughtful humorous banter with your buddies, but what happens when a rhetorical tool is no longer a game? What happens when this question becomes a very real dilemma in somebody’s life?

Murder cases on Desi Crime usually have a clear perpetrator and a clear victim. But sometimes crimes are not so cut-and-dry. Some cases can flip our perceptions of what is wrong and what is right; what is good and what is evil. The story of Chamari Liyanage dabbles in that gray-area. It\'s a story of a woman; abused, tormented, and emotionally tortured until one day … she snaps. But the strange part is, she doesn\'t quite remember how it happened.

A commonality across all families is struggle, hard times, broken relationships, and dirty laundry we keep to ourselves. Regardless, we love our families. Whether it’s those horrible teenage years where you can’t stop arguing with your parents or whether you were blessed with a sibling completely your opposite or whether your mother hates her mother-in-law, these problems are common and universal across time and culture. But some families have secrets deeper and darker than these. Some families have secrets that leave lives destroyed. Families that give credence to the saying, “with a family like this, who needs enemies?”. This is the story of one such family- the Bora family. This is the Sheena Bora murder case.

22 year old Nadia Malik is nowhere to be found. All we know is that her partner Bhupinder Singh picked her up in a Black Nissan Altima around February 6th. A murder involves a murderer, the murdered, a murder weapon and more often than not, a motive. This template is true for most cases covered on our podcast, and on any true crime podcast for that matter. But where there is a rule, there is an exception. The case we have for you today is one such exception. This case has a murder, but no murder weapon, no motive, and no murderer. When in 1999, the body of a beautiful 34 year old model and celebrity bartender was found lying on the floor of the fancy Tamarind Court restaurant in Mehrauli in New Delhi, with a clear bullet wound to her head, her family and the cops thought this was an open and shut case. This was a party of 300 some people, after all. Someone has to have seen someone, someone will come forward. There should’ve been no dearth of evidence in the case at all. And 7 years after the crime, the verdict was out. The Times of India printed the verdict on the front page of their February 22’ 2006 paper. “No one killed Jessica”. This is the story of that night in 1999 when Jessica Lal was killed, yet somehow nobody killed her. This is the story of Jessica Lal. 

Any “Travel to Australia” advertisement on television displays stills of the Great Barrier Reef and pearl white beaches. Volleyball, tank tops, scantily clothed and sizzlingly tanned bodies can be found frolicking around. But on 22nd October 2018, a body was found in one such Australian beach. The difference was, this wasn’t a tanned person frolicking around. In fact, this body did not appear to move at all. This is the story of the day that redefined the \'beach\' for residents of Queensland, Australia; this is the story of Toyah Cordingley.

And then, on the night of 27th November 1973, the actions of one man changed this woman’s life forever and pushed her into a 42-year-long nightmare. Beautiful, sexy, or hot?’ One could have easily mistaken these words to be uttered by a Kim Kardashian, a Kendal Jenner or some other young woman on Instagram seeking fame, if only it was not for the broken English. These words, as salacious and incorrectly framed as they maybe, mark a struggle if one chooses to read between the lines. These were the very words that gave a woman in Pakistan a new, a life she had always desired. But the very same words were also responsible for snatching away her life from her. This is the story of that woman from Pakistan who simply yearned for a better life; this is the story of Qandeel Baloch.

When we cover these cases, the ones that hit the hardest are those with the clearest injustice: deep-rooted, disturbing, and plain to see. Cases where the very ones tasked with righting injustice — our parents, our schools, our police — are the ones who perpetrate it. It makes all of our blood boil to hear of lives destroyed, families torn apart, futures snatched over trivialities. When you visit an Indian restaurant, from the god awfully long menu, there is one genre of food item that always stands out— us desis are in fact known for this around the world. The tandoor.
