"The best way to control the opposition is to lead it." The anti-war movement was becoming a big issue for the military industrial complex in the late '50s into the '60s. Creating the hippie movement may have been the most controversial things they have ever done. This was a major distraction that allowed over 280,000 US & allied military deaths to go unanswered for because of this major psy-op.
