We're joined by fellow Kingkiller Chronicle fan, Tom Wouters, to discuss his debut book: Blood of the First Men. Drawing upon his DnD dungeon master's background, Tom brings together many fantastic and original races into an expansive world with a physics-based magic system. His story follows Eldi as he quests to reunite with his people, yet Eldi is drawn to darker and malevolent forces. We discuss having morally grey characters, developing magic systems, writing fight scenes, favorite characters, cover art, and more.

We return to the Kingkiller Chronicles and Patrick Rothfuss' newest novella, The Narrow Road Between Desires, which Sam describes as "A Day in the Life of Bast." It's a slightly shorter episode for a slightly shorter book, but we theorize a lot about Fae magic, including Grammarie and Glammourie, and foreshadowing through Embrils. We also discuss The Lightning Tree, sexy fae tropes, Bast's deal-making skills, where this story falls in the Kingkiller timeline, time travel, the artwork, and, of course, we do mention some of the controversy surrounding this story.

This week we get one chapter from Vin's perspective as she attends another ball and one chapter from Kelsier's perspective as he gathers some intel from informants. Vin attends her second ball, only to be pestered by Elend Venture and his enormous stack of books. She turns her luck around and gets asked to dance by several young gentlemen, but then unfortunately gets drawn into the plans of Lady Shan Elariel. Kelsier continues his antagonizing of the nobility by leaving a certain "present" in the Tekial garden, and then continues on to clandestine meetings with Lord Straff Venture and Hoid.

Our debut miniseries features this new dark fantasy novel by Jonathan Edward Durham! This week we delve into part one of this fantastic, beautifully written story. We follow John Eamon, a young man with a big chip on his shoulder, on his seemingly-innocuous trip to visit the home of his favorite book's author. Things are pretty quickly turned upside down as Eamon and his two friends, Mark and Caroline, start to explore forbidden areas of the author's estate, but you'll have to listen to this episode to discover what sorts of oddities they encounter.

In this set of chapters, our group of misfits embark on their mission, entering the Eld and starting their search for the bandits. Kvothe makes some minor breakthroughs with Tempi and the Ademic language, while Martin teaches the group about tracking. We also get some interesting campfire stories, including a particular favorite of Ana & Sam's, the boy with the golden bellybutton. We also muse over why the Maer sent Kvothe out to this isolated land and whether or not Kvothe and Tarborlin are connected.

They enjoy each other's company exploring Severen, sneaking into the Maer's garden, and discussing music...when Denna is actually around. We also discuss her disappearance, the gram Kvothe makes for the Maer, who Denna's patron is, and the thrice locked box. Be sure to answer our listener poll about which character you'd like to be!

At last we are in Vintas! After losing almost all his possessions in a shipwreck, Kvothe is forced to make some tough decisions and use his cunning to make his way into Maer Alveron's grand estate. Once there, he enters an entirely new world with rules and customs that he must learn and adapt to quickly in order to stay the in Maer's good graces. Will the court politics prove to much for our favorite adventurer? Will Kvothe rise to the challenge and gain the Maer as a patron and ally in his quest to find the Chandrian and the Amyr? We're fondly calling this episode the classic 80's montage because Kvothe and his crew do so many awesome things in these chapters! He reveals his special artificery project, makes amends with an old friend, sees a classmate master a bit of Naming, meets a quirky old man, gets a letter from his lady love.....and goes to jail?! On second thought we might consider these chapters to be a dense set of side quests because so many projects get finished (and he does get rewarded!) yet so many new things happen to Kvothe. As always, he's getting simultaneously closer and further to some answers about the Ancient Order of Amyr.

Kvothe's good luck streak continues as this episode opens with him getting back Denna's ring and continues with him receiving a special gift from the hooded girl who has been lurking around the Fishery. He has many a good time with Will and Simmon to boot, including a drunken story session at a Greystone. The more answers and clues Kvothe seems to get in these chapters just open up more questions for Ana and Sam. Other topics include the meaning of the universe, tongue twisters, the phases of the moon, and ...is "Wisconsin the Fae realm?"!

Heist! Heist! Heist!
In this episode, two of Kvothe's masterful plans finally come to fruition and the taste of victory is oh so sweet! He successfully crafts his gram and, to the horror of his friends (especially Sim), makes them test out its strength by performing malfeasance against him. He also pulls of the greatest heist in history while breaking into Ambrose's rooms...again. This time he enlists a little more help and with the whole gang's efforts he manages to enact revenge on Ambrose, destroy the source of malfeasance, get some money, find the receipt for Denna's ring, AND knock over a chamber pot all in about 5 minutes.

We're back, baby! This week, after a hiatus caused by us moving, we're back and ready for action! We follow Kvothe into his steepest decline of "tough times" as he continues to deal with malfeasance, the loss of his winning streak in Advanced Sympathy, and...the horrible loss of his lute. Thankfully, we go far enough into these chapters to witness the changing of his luck and the turning of the tides, as he has an amazing experience with Denna and starts to make some headway with his gram and a myriad of other plans.

We psyched ourselves out this week thinking we could cover 6 chapters when in reality we went so deeply into the first two that we cut the episode there. Each chapter follows Kvothe on his "errands" - one with Sleat and one with Devi, and neither go particularly well, although one is significantly worse than the other. We're still in the thick of his tough times by the end of this episode and things are looking worse and worse for our hero. (It's also our last episode in our original studio!)

It's the long awaited anniversary episode! We do explain why were were late, but other than that we dive right in to some of the most interesting Kingkiller Chronicle fan theories out there. SPOILERS for all of The Wide Man's Fear and Slow Regard of Silent Things because we had to hunt for Patrick Rothfuss' breadcrumbs through all of his writings. In particular, we cover the Chandrian, Chthaeh, and Auri, but it's an episode jam packed with details and predictions about many aspects of the story, including Selito's eye, the Locelos Box, Kvothe's identities, Felurian, and much more. Send us your favorite fan theories and predictions for The Doors of Stone and let us know what you think of the theories we discussed.
In this episode, Kvothe finally gets two things he's wanted for a LONG time: Access to the Archives and Elodin's attention, so we've got a lot to unpack, especially because neither turns out quite to be what Kvothe expected. He's put to the test finding books for his naming class just to discover that it was a waste of his time, chagrined to find anything useful written on the Chandrian, and rebuked by Kilvin for potentially selling charms. AND to top it all off, Kvothe witnesses the unthinkable: Denna and Ambrose together out on a date.
Keep your eyes out for a bonus episode coming out later this week!

In a slightly more last-minute episode than usual, we follow Kvothe as he endures a rough start to his semester at the University. We're not talking the usual strain of the admissions interview either. Kvothe gets plum-bobbed, has an emotional breakdown, is tricked into burning Master Hemme's robes, and makes yet another deal with Devi. Along the way he also has an amazing performance at the Eolian featuring Bell Weather and Tintantatornin (or however you say it!), gets to drink decadent chocolate with Denna, and helps old Anker out with his iceless. We also manage to chat about hot cross buns, Spongebob, and ponder over what The Buckle could be.

We are a little late posting the start to Season 2, which covers Patrick Rothfuss' The Wise Man's Fear, but we make up for our tardiness with a very lengthy discussion to the start of the 2nd book in the Kingkiller Chronicles. We chat about Bast, Chronicler, Kvothe and the host of townsfolk at the Waystone Inn as well as delving back into Kvothe's past and analyzing our old favorites like Williem, Threpe, Simmon, and Denna (although she's not Ana's "favorite"). The draccus and Kvothe finally have their epic showdown after last episode's buildup. There's fire, there's sympathy, and there's screaming villagers, so it's the perfect opportunity for the overly dramatic Kvothe to take down a "demon." In the aftermath, he impresses the Constable and Mayor of Trebon with a great cloak whip and intimidates the town's rude bartender with a little bit of sympathy. Soup’s on and Dinnah’s ready! This episode Kvothe gets quite romantic with Denna, or Dianne...or Dinnah... or whatever her name is. Either way, he’s head over heels for her and spends a lot of time walking around with her or walking around looking for her. He also manages to get slightly on Kilvin’s bad side by making a certain lamp, and he stays on Lorren’s bad side, a fact that is made worse when he decides to write a catchy little tune about a donkey...Join us this week as we discuss chapters 60-65 of the Name of the Wind!

New friends, new enemies seems to be the theme of these chapters. Kvothe manages to get through only his first two days of classes before some crazy stuff happens! We cover his first successful attempt in getting into the archives, only to be foiled by Master Lorren, the "standing stone." He manages to make a great group of friends, but within minutes of meeting them, they place bets on how well he will do in school. He wows an entire class of new students with an amazing sympathy demonstration, but manages to get in trouble with all of the Masters. If there's one thing for certain is that in these chapters, Kvothe starts to make a BIG reputation for himself. We cover all this and more! This week we pick up with Kvothe after he hit rock bottom by getting beaten up during the holiday season. He turns things around by setting up a Scooby-Doo style trap for his nemesis, "Pike the Goon" and by collecting two awesome stories. The first is a religion-origin story from Trapis, but there certainly are a lot of parallels with the second story, which is the tale of Lanre he hears from Skarpi. The numbers six and seven come up a lot in both stories, and we try to guess where Lanre got his naming powers from.
