Dog walkers are a vital part of our dog care, many of us would not be able to have our dogs without a dog walker... but who is walking our dogs?

For me, picking who is going to walk our dog is as important as who is going to look after my child. They have keys to my home, they are here alone with me when they pick the dog up and they have sole responsibility for my dog when I am not there. That is a lot of responsibility.

In this week's episode I chat to Dani Paizis who is a K9 chiropractor. We talk about how we see many people doing things “to” dogs, rather than doing things “with our dogs”, so often a dog isn’t given any choice, or autonomy, which can be a  big problem. 

We discuss the role of social media both influencers and canine professionals are not showing welfare first, dog centred care of dogs and how that’s a problem. 

Once we understand what a welfare first, dog centred philosophy looks like, we can then start to be more intentional within our relationships and truly advocate for their needs. Be this at the vets, with your dog trainer, with other family members, meeting other dogs on walks.

In this episode Karen and I discuss how giving the dog a job can be an effective part of helping a dog to overcome behavioural concerns. This isn't just for the traditional gun dogs either - this can help any breed of dog.

Often dogs in modern society have limited opportunity to exhibit natural canine behaviours and this often can lead to behavioural concerns. By helping dogs have an outlet for these behaviours we can reduce some of the issues that they face.

Dog's barking at the postman is a relationship as long as dogs and postmen have been around. Dog's who love everyone often bark at postmen (post women and other delivery people), dog's who don't love people bark at people coming to the home, and dog's who never bark reserve their bark just for this time.

So why do they target delivery people?

When I approached Sophie about coming on to our podcast to chat about the fallout of using punishment in behavioural modification I could not image that she would be able to have a client who used a shock collar on their dog who would be willing to chat on the podcast.

This is a fascinating insight into why people choose to use punitive methods on their dogs and the fallout from using these.

In this episode we are preparing our dogs to come out of lockdown. For some of out puppies there are lots of new experiences coming, for some dogs there might be training that has been forgotten and for some of our dogs things are going to feel overwhelming.

We want to start our training now so that we can use the pathway out of lockdown to aid our training plans!

Over the last year there has been a dramatic rise in people looking to purchase a puppy. Unfortunately there is a dark side to this and that dark side is that more and more puppy scams have appeared. 

On this podcast I chat with Laura Short who is a solicitor for a national law firm specialising in dealing with and resolving disputes between individuals.

I met Laura when I trained her adorable puppy Ruby and today we are chatting about the legal side of buying a puppy.

Even as someone who works in the industry Parkour was not something I knew a lot about and so understanding how it can help dogs have a more positive outlook on life! We, of course, also discuss how parkour activities can help with socialising a puppy and allowing them to feel more confident about exploring the world.

Marc Abraham, or Marc the Vet as he is more commonly known, is not only a practising vet but also a broadcaster, author and animal welfare campaigner. 

The list of Marc's accomplishments could cover an entire episode on its own, but today we are talking to him about his very successful campaigns around animal welfare, promoting rescue pet adoption and responsible breeding, as well as actively advocating to stop the cruel puppy farming industry. 

In todays episode we go through Marc's campaigning journey, resulting in new legislation, known as Lucy's Law which was brought in last year.

On this podcast we have Sophie White who is a veterinary behaviourist. The relationship between a behaviourist and a veterinary surgeon is integral to behavioural modification. Sophie is in a unique position in that she is both a veterinary surgeon and a qualified behaviourist. In this episode we are discussing the relationship between pain and behaviour and why a veterinary check is vital before embarking on a behavioural modification plan. Verity is one of the judges on the BBC show Pooch Perfect. Today we are talking about how the dogs were kept happy on the set of Pooch Perfect, which was an interesting look behind the scenes. As someone who professes to know nothing about grooming I have learnt so much from Verity's knowledge that she shares with us today to ensure that our dogs are not getting matted leading to severe clips. No matter what breed of dog you have we talk about how to ensure your dog is happy being handled and groomed
