As artists, you’re likely great with painting a story on canvas, in watercolor, through music or whatever medium you play in, but storytelling is a wonderful skill we can all benefit from improving. Telling stories well is art, and it’s something that each and every one of us can do easily every day.
Matthew Dicks is an international best seller with awards for being a nationally recognized storyteller. He joined us in Episode 203 and discussed his latest book, Someday Is Today, which I highly recommend checking out!
In this two-part series, we’re continuing the conversation around his other book, Storyworthy: Engage, Teach, Persuade, and Change Your Life through the Power of Storytelling. So now we’re diving into what the art of storytelling looks like for the average person who doesn’t identify as a storyteller.
Noteworthy points with master storyteller, Matthew Dicks:
“Most of the time, we allow our memories to be tossed away like trash, when they are our most precious commodities.” -Matthew Dicks
Matthew Dicks is the co-founder and artistic director of Speak Up, a storytelling organization that produces shows in New England. In addition to being an internationally bestselling author of multiple fiction and non-fiction books, he is also a 56-time Moth StorySLAM champion and 9-time GrandSLAM champion. The most important thing for you to learn today is that, given all the accolades Matthew has, his best advice for being a better storyteller is to simply become a better listener.
“Be the last person to speak in every room you enter, and I think you'll find it's really helpful in terms of just being a better communicator and a better person.” -Matthew Dicks
