235: Proposing Your Book to Publishers with Allison Lane and Miriam Schulman

33 min • 6 december 2022

If you’ve been on the fence about publishing a book and overwhelmed about what goes into it, then this episode is going to answer many of your questions.

I have to admit, getting my book traditionally published was not as simple as I thought it would be, but I have no regrets about the journey.

Allison Lane helps people get published by guiding them through the process of writing a proposal to secure a book agent and ultimately get a publishing contract. I feel lucky to have had her guidance preparing my own book proposal for Artpreneur

“The book proposal becomes the anchor to every author's marketing ecosystem.” -Allison Lane

We’re peeling back the layers of the marketing it takes to create a book proposal and what goes into pitching it. There are a number of areas you can get wrong attempting this process on your own, and Allison simplifies the process for you because of her marketing background.

Key insights we discuss about book proposals:

  • Your book proposal is an important marketing document that requires skill to pitch and is used even after the book is published
  • How the right book comps in your book proposal are key for the editor to see what audiences your book can be marketed to
  • Writing a captivating hook for the book proposal is a challenge when you don’t keep in mind who is reading it and for what purpose.
  • Be your best marketer by giving people access to you and how you and your work makes them feel

Pitching a book takes lots of specialized skills, industry knowledge, and effort. If I had chosen the self-publishing route, it would have been a much different experience, but it would’ve also turned out to be a much different book. Regardless of the route you decide to go, don’t be afraid to write your story and share it with the world.

“Words really matter and understanding who the end recipient of those words are is really about empathy and understanding, all communication strategy is.” -Allison Lane
