Seventy-one of Belli’s sonnets form the appendix to Burgess’s 1977 book ABBA ABBA. The following podcast discusses who Belli was, considers the reason for Burgess’s interest in this nineteenth-century poet, and maps out the evolution of Burgess’s translations using original audio footage from the archives at the Burgess Foundation in Manchester and an interview with Dr. Nicoletta Di Ciolla from Manchester Metropolitan University.
