Episode Summary:

Korea has been focused on multifunctional beauty products for several years, thanks in part to the impact of the pandemic and also in part due to the continued push towards sustainability. Multifunctional skincare products hit on a couple of key trends that consumers are presently invested in. Firstly, condensing their beauty routines and using fewer products in the interests of saving money.

The cost of living crisis in many countries around the world has forced some beauty consumers to tighten their belts. They're consequently looking to do "more with less".

For others, the desire to do the "right thing" by the environment and cut down on unnecessary steps in their skincare routine has propelled their move towards multi-functionality.

In addition, multi-functional products have always been popular among the jet-set crowd, looking to take fewer (and less spill-ier) products with them on the road.

Whatever the reason, we can expect products that achieve several goals within formula to continue to gain popularity.

We hosted our first ever live event over the weekend in Euljiro at an adorable rooftop event space in Seoul
This was our first ever event out of COVID restrictions because we launched our brand in the peak of the pandemic at the end of 2020
Guests ate macarons, gelato-shaped jellies, drank Prosecco and champagne and tried out our collection

About Gelato Glaze Lip Mask

Ingredients

Lysine and 8 essential amino acids support healthy skin, while decadent oils and butter give your lips a plump sheen.
Shea butter is soothing and nourishing, making it perfect for chapped lips.
Sunflower Seed Oil is high in essential fatty acids, which helps to lock in moisture.
Jojoba Seed Oil is rich in vitamin B and E, which helps to condition the skin and replenish moisture levels.
Moringa Oleifera Seed Oil helps to keep your lips soft and smooth.
Orange Peel Oil is helpful at soothing dry, irritated skin
No artificial dyes or colours

How to use

to hydrate, plump and smooth lips

before makeup to ensure makeup glides on and

overnight as a lip sleeping mask.

Process of making it

We started working on it in early 2022 and it will be ready in mid-June 2023
For this release we were really committed to improving our sustainability credentials so we completely changed packaging manufacturers for our boxes.

Packaging

Our boxes are made from 100% recycled paper and printed using soybean ink
The container for each lip mask is made of a lightweight glass packaging
The spatula is a 100% recyclable zinc

Why we made it

Multifunctional: the product hydrates, plumps, glazes and nourishes lips and can be used in place of lip sleeping masks and glosses.
Different texture to the other products on the market because of the unique blends of oils, butters and waxes.

23 Years Old Aqua Bab Modelling Mask - 5 stars

Beautiful Skin

"I've used many face masks, however the 23 Years Old Aqua Bab Modeling Mask is by far the best I've used. I received a box which contains 4 uses. Its quite easy to make and use, the instructions are very easy to follow. Basically mixing sachet 1 then 2 and using the little mixing/application stick. The texture is quite thick, I was surprised at how well it held onto my face and stayed there as I did apply a thick layer all over my face.

The mask has a nice cool effect and when it dries it didn't feel stiff or dry on my skin. It felt quite nourishing and soft - a little like a jelly feel. To remove the mask I started from the bottom and rolled it upwards. It was super easy and clean to come off. I then gently patted the excess into my skin.

The results were amazing! My skin was super hydrated and I felt like my pores and fine lines were less visible. I had an instant glow to my skin. I applied the mask in the AM so I could enjoy the benefits of the mask throughout the day. My makeup applied so beautifully, I had a really nice flawless look without the effort. I am so happy with the 23 Years Old Aqua Bab Modeling Mask. definitely a holy grail product for me! I highly recommend!"

Popular Korean Nail Art Trends

Korean nail trends are always changing but gel nails in general are the most popular.
Nearly everyone in Korea does nail art as well, rather than just a simple one colour
Nail art in Korea is very seasonal, so you will notice most shops have a Christmas themed nail selection for December, cherry blossom / floral themed in spring, beach themed in summer, autumnal palette in fall etc.
However, the techniques being used are what changes. At the moment, donut nails are really popular. This is a technique where a little bit of polish is used to create raised designs on the nails. Originally, they were being done in donut-like shapes, which is why they were called donut nails. Now, I see artists using them in a variety of shapes.
Korean nail salons operate a little differently than western salons. Here, it’s common for salons to offer memberships. Most salons also have ‘monthly nail art specials’, where they will pre-prepare some set designs for the month at a discounted rate.

KOREAN EYEBROW TRENDS

Brow Tattoos

Brow tattooing has always been popular and this trend is continuing in 2022. Because only your eyes and eyebrows can be seen above COVID masks a lot of people have been keeping up with their lash and brow treatments.

Micro-shading, giving the brows a soft and powdery look, is very popular

Quite a quick procedure - it takes a few hours at most. The after-care is a little time consuming though.

Brow Lift

More and more people are doing a procedure called a brow lift, which is just a simple perm procedure to enhance the look of the eyebrows. It’s called a brow lift in Korean, but in English a brow lift is an actual surgical procedure.
This is similar to a lash lift, where you are just using your own natural eyebrow hairs but making them look a bit cleaner, clearer and stand out a bit more.
It lasts about a month - 1.5 months. The prerequisite is that you do actually need some eyebrow hairs so this is not a good procedure for people who don’t have a good set of brow hairs to begin with.
A lot of people end up doing a lift and tint at the same time to really bring out the line of their eyebrows.

1 Retinol & Bakuchiol

K-Beauty has traditionally shied away from retinol due to all the perceived and real pitfalls of it. However, I am seeing more and more releases featuring retinol and bakuchiol, which is touted as a natural retinol alternative.

We have already seen releases from 23 Years Old, Chosungah 22, Innisfree, Charmzone amd APLB and I suspect we will see even more.

Multi Use Products

K-Beauty is definitely moving further away from intricate routines in favour of paired down products that do more with less. People are using their toner to double as a mask, with cotton pads instead of mask sheets. And many multi-use products are hitting the market as well.

Sustainability

Korea’s new recycling label regulations have already come into effect. Brands are now required to indicate how easy or difficult a product is to recycle. More brands are opting for things like label-less products, some are offering recycling stations and there are increasingly more sustainable packaging options being produced as well.

Vegan

This is not a new trend in K-Beauty but what is new is how many mainstream brands are picking up on the vegan trend. Tony Moly, d’Alba and quite a few brands that have traditionally not focused specifically on vegan formulas or products are now offering vegan lines. I can’t seem to jump on a subway in Seoul at the moment without seeing an ad for a new vegan skincare or makeup line.

5 Fragrance

The market for fragrance products has seen an unprecedented expansion both in size and type of products, with more consumers, especially those in their 20s and 30s, keen to experience new fragrances.

According to Euromonitor, Korea’s fragrance market grew 36.4 percent from 2018 to 2019, and is projected to reach 650 billion won ($547.5 million) by 2023.

Especially during the pandemic, people are buying things like incense, perfumes, scented candles and even skincare products with distinct scents. More K-Beauty brands are running with signature fragrances for their products - like Huxley, Tamburins.

CJ Olive Young has reported a surge of nearly 90 percent in sales in the category over the past year.

When it comes to acids, you’ve probably seen a few acronyms popping up over and over – AHAs, BHAs and PHAs.

Today, we’re jumping in to take a look at the three most common types of acids and how to use them in your routine.

Episode Summary:

Exfoliants have come a long way since your first apricot scrub. While exfoliating has always been a big part of skincare routines, these days the chemicals are taking the spotlight

What do all they mean?

AHA, BHA and PHA are the most common types of acids used in skincare today. If you’re using acids in your products, chances are it’s one of these three.

AHAs

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) are the original gangster of skincare acids.

Naturally found in fruits, water-soluble AHAs such as lactic or glycolic acids gently melt away dead skin cells. They also stimulate the cell regeneration process, making for great anti-ageing benefits. They are also perfect for drier skin.

AHAs can benefit pigmentation, help to even out skin tone, preserve moisture and even reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

BHAs

Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA) are a gentler alternative to AHAs.

Salicylic acid is the most commonly used BHA today. Containing many of the same benefits as AHAs, the fat solubility of BHAs dissolve oil and makes them effective on blocked pores, blackheads, whiteheads and acne.

BHAs also have anti-inflammatory properties and soothe redness.

PHA

The new kid on the block, Poly Hydroxy Acids (PHAs) work similarly to AHAs in that they also melt away dead skin cells.

What makes PHAs different is that their molecules are larger. This means they take longer to work, which makes them perfect for light exfoliation on very sensitive skin. They are even recommended for sensitive or easily irritated skin. For mature skin types, PHA is also a good option as it helps preserve collagen levels.

Practical Tips

Stay Sun Safe!

It probably goes without saying, as you should already be using a high SPF product in your skincare routine, but if you want to introduce acids, then SPF is essential. Acids can work wonders with exfoliation, but they do make your skin more sensitive to the skin, so be religious about reapplying as well.

Make sure you don’t overdo it on the acids.

Combining them can cause irritation, so if you are prone to dry skin, sensitivity or redness, stick to just one. On the other hand, if you have oily skin, combining BHAs and AHAs may be safe and even beneficial.

A word of caution though – if you notice any redness, sensitivity, or excessive dryness, that’s a sign to slow down with your acids. Cut back to using them 2-3 times a week and alternate between your acids.

If you’re layering them, start with your BHA first.

Think of layering acids like double cleansing – start with your oil-soluble BHA first, and then move onto your AHA.

BHAs are typically formulated to be a pH of 3.5 and AHAs have to be formulated at a pH of under 4.

You’ll want to use your BHA product first, not only because

BHAs are lower in pH but also because they are oil soluble and AHAs are not.

K-Beauty News Headlines

Korea's cosmetics exports reached a new record last year.
According to the Korea Customs Service, Korea exported US$6.12 billion of cosmetics in 2020, up 14.8 percent from the previous year
In the first quarter of this year, exports grew by 32.4% year-on-year with skincare products leading the way, with an increase of 24%. Makeup sales were down, likely due to the impact of working from home and mask wearing.
The biggest importers of Korean cosmetics are China, Hong Kong, the US, Japan and Vietnam
Korea's imports of cosmetics fell 10.7% on-year in 2020 to $1.07 billion.

A few things to note about the K-Beauty industry generally

Size of market is huge, as evidenced by latest export figures
Dominated by two players - Amore Pacific and LG Household and Health Care
It is literally no exaggeration to say that Korea’s national economy was built on export. After the Korean War, the country was decimated, and had a GDP the size of countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Korea is now the world’s 10th largest economy. The turnaround is 100% due to Korea’s exports. As a country, Korea has few natural resources so to speak of; instead, they build things and then sell them overseas.
Historically, the government identified sectors to focus on for its exports, things like cars, semiconductors etc. These days, cosmetics are also at the top of the list.
KOTRA, the national trade agency, plays a huge role in promoting and assisting companies to export overseas.

Today, we’re taking a look at the best Korean skincare for sensitive skin. We’ll explore the root causes of skin sensitivity, plus some of the best K-Beauty ingredients to care for it.

WHY DOES SKIN BECOME SENSITIVE?
Skin can become sensitive thanks to a variety of external environmental factors. This includes things like pollution, sun exposure and artificial heating. More problematically, sometimes skin even becomes sensitive as a result of the use of incorrect or harsh skincare products or incompatible ingredients. This can erode the skin’s barrier and open it up to bacteria and other aggravations.

External factors can result in skin becoming dry, red, uneven and make it look older, with larger pores.

HOW TO AVOID SENSITIVE SKIN:

Avoid ingredients that don’t agree with your skin
I don’t like fear-mongering in skincare and I certainly don’t agree with a blanket ban on all types of ingredients that some influencers and bloggers like to push.

The truth is that nearly all common ingredients in skincare products are fine for the vast majority of people. They wouldn’t be in the products if they were toxic or harmful because very few companies are in the business of courting lawsuits and product recalls.

That’s not to say that some ingredients don’t agree with some people, but blanket ruling out entire categories of ingredients in skincare products is akin to extreme diet culture in my books. For most people, all things in moderation is the recipe for healthy skin.

Some ingredients that can be problematic for some skin types include:

Dyes
Fragrances
Parabens
Alcohols
Preservatives
Sulfates
Phthalates and
Acids
Coconut oil
Lanolin
Essential oils
Isopropyl palmitate

Make sure you always patch test any new skincare products you buy so that you can eliminate any that don’t agree with you.

Using a product or ingredients that’s not right for your skin can result in painful breakouts, bumps and clogged pores that can take weeks to clear.

Don’t use water that’s too hot
I know how tempting it is to jump into a hot shower or bath. But if you’re trying to aggravate your skin, this is a good way to go about it. When cleansing your face especially, it’s best to stick to lukewarm water and don’t towel-dry off too aggressively.

Avoid over-exfoliation
We’ve previously covered the dangers of over-exfoliating skin, but it bares repeating: Overdoing it with your scrubs and acids can result in everything from:

excessive dryness
irritation
redness
breakouts; and even
a burning sensation on the skin.

The reason is that exfoliation targets the outer layer of the skin. Once this layer is compromised, the skin is unable to perform its barrier function as healthy skin cells are disrupted.

Don’t leave the house without sunscreen
Hopefully this goes without saying, but you should never leave the house without sunscreen.

That is unless you fancy anything from sun spots and skin discolorations, to red veins, blotchiness, premature wrinkles, skin sensitivity and even the risk of skin cancer.

SENSITIVE-SKIN FRIENDLY K-BEAUTY INGREDIENTS
If you’re looking for Korean skincare ingredients that work for most sensitive skin types try:

Allantoin – extracted from the comfrey plants, this ingredient stimulates skin cell regeneration to heal and protect sensitive skin while also softening and soothing.

Burdock root – this is a plant extract that soothes skin and acts as an antioxidant.

Centella asiatica – not only is it effective in treating wounds, this famous Asian plant also aids in healing incisions and burns, by promoting collagen production and inhibiting the inflammation that leads to scarring.

Green tea – the polyphenols in green tea have potent antioxidant and skin-soothing properties, making it ideal for sensitive skin.

Licorice – thanks to its glabridin content, licorice helps protect skin from environmental stressors that cause sensitivity.

Madecassoside – one of the bioactive compounds in Centella asiatica, this ingredient serves as an antioxidant and has been shown to be non-sensitizing. It helps to revitalize skin’s surface.

Panthenol - also known as Provitamin B5, is the alcohol form of vitamin B5. When skin care products containing Provitamin B5 are absorbed by the skin, the provitamin is converted to Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), which moisturises, calms, repairs and revitalizes skin.

Adenosine functions as a skin soothing and restoring agent.

THE BEST KOREAN BEAUTY PRODUCTS FOR SENSITIVE SKIN

If you’re already suffering from sensitivities, these are some products that can help:

Benton Aloe Propolis Soothing Gel – this moisturising gel contains natural, gentle ingredients with no alcohol or fragrance. It helps soothe irritated skin and maintain the correct level of hydration.

Jelly Ko Cherry Blossom Sleeping Mask - contains allantoin, adenosine and panthenol, which are both on the sensitive skin friendly list and skips out on alcohol, silicone, essential oils, mineral oil, sulfate detergents, parabens, urea, DEA, PEGs, TEA and phthalates. The light gel texture is very soothing.

APLB Derma Daily Repair Cream – Harnessing the power of peptides plus skin brightening niacimamide, hydrating sodium hyaluronate and wrinkle-fighting ceramides, this intensive daily repair skin is just the ticket for dry, dull, lacklustre, sensitive and aging skin.

Tosowoong Pure Green Tea Mask – bathed in high quality green tea extract, this mask relieves sensitivities with vitamins and minerals that deeply hydrate, visibly plump, calm and protect skin.

Benton Aloe Soothing Mask Pack – this gentle face mask offers soothing, hydrating, nourishing, cooling and revitalising benefits to sensitive, easily-irritated skin.

iUNIK Centella Calming Gel Cream – Combining Centella asiatica leaf water (70%) with soothing Tea tree leaf water 10%, this calming moisturiser takes care of blotchiness and sensitivity.

Tosowoong Green Tea Eco Brightening Essence – this hydrating and brightening essence uses green tea to soothe and calm red, irritated and sensitive skin.

Who Am I?

Most of you who are listening will probably have met me through STYLE STORY, my business which was founded in 2014 and is Australia’s first Korean Beauty store.

If you haven’t already met me either in person or online, then allow me to introduce myself.

I’m your host Lauren Lee and I’ve spent the last 10 years living and breathing all things K-Beauty. I’m an Aussie who is now permanently based in Seoul, South Korea and I can’t wait to share all the things I’ve learned living and working in the K-Beauty industry with you.

I have created this podcast so that I can provide you with practical tips to help you with your own Korean beauty journey. I’m going to be giving you all the tricks I’ve picked up through my own Korean beauty routine, as well as working with Korea’s hottest skincare and makeup brands for the last 7 years.

I’m also going to be sharing the things I wish I’d known so hopefully I can save you some time, money and wasted products. These episodes are going to be coming to you once a week every Tuesday.

Why K-Beauty?

To give you a little bit of an idea about who I am and where I’ve come from, I first discovered Korean Beauty nearly 10 years ago while studying on exchange at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea.

At the time, I had no idea that K-Beauty even existed and I didn’t speak the Korean language.

I was originally drawn in by the innovative product packaging, and once I tried the products for myself I was surprised by just how different Korean beauty products were to anything I’d tried before. The ingredients and formulas were really unique and the quality was comparable to products five times as expensive back home.

I started bringing Korean skincare and makeup back to Australia for friends and

family as gifts, but before I knew it I was filling “orders” for people who had fallen in love with them and wanted more!

Initially, I founded my business STYLE STORY as a hobby but several years later, with the products basically selling themselves, I set up STYLE STORY as a side-hustle.

Since then, the business has grown to become my full-time job and led me full circle back to a life in Seoul, Korea where I’ve lived since 2016. I now speak fluent Korean and STYLE STORY has teams in both Seoul, South Korea and Australia, along with a warehouse based in Sydney.
