K-BEAUTY NEWS HEADLINES - Korea Cracks Down on False Advertising Claims
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) recently published a notification of cosmetics violating the advertisement requirements. As online shopping for homecare products surged during COVID 19 pandemic, MFDS inspected over 500 cosmetics sold online, finding that 336 products made false claims of medical efficacies, most of which were cellulite cream.
Phrases like “scar treatment” and “fat reduction” were being used to describe ordinary cosmetics, rather than registered drugs and treatments.
In Korea, cosmetics are products that “apply, rub, spray, etc. to the human body in order to clean, beautify, maintain or improve the health of skin and hair, and have minor effects on the human body.” By their definition, these are not products that have ‘medical’ effects’ and therefore brands need to be very careful in the types of claims they make about products that are ordinary cosmetics.
The authority emphasized the importance of promoting products legally, and showed the examples of non-compliance advertisement cases for brands to use as a guide.
