The week of December 11, 2024 on The Metallica Report…
Steff and Renée are getting ready for the fourth biennial Helping Hands Concert & Auction on Friday, December 13, by speaking with two of this year’s honorees.
First, Renée catches up with actress Maggie Baird (aka the mother of Billie Eilish and Finneas) from Support + Feed. If that organization sounds familiar, it’s because Support + Feed joined us on the 2024 North American M72 run of shows, spreading the word about their work changing the food equity system through education around a plant-based diet.
Next, Renée and Steff enjoy an in-depth chat with Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament, who discusses his non-profit organization, Montana Pool Service. MPS works to build world-class skate parks and connect youth communities in Montana, Washington, and South Dakota.
Though unavailable to join the podcast this week, we still get to hear from Father Greg Boyle, the founder of our third honoree this year, Homeboy Industries. By providing hope, training, and support to formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated people, Homeboy Industries has evolved into the largest gang intervention, rehab, and re-entry program in the world.

Steffan gives Renée —and all of us—the lowdown on how Metallica’s two weekends in Mexico City wrapped up, including updates on support acts, Lucha Libre, Robert’s Spanish, James’ take on Robert and Kirk’s spotlight in the set, and the way metal is deeply rooted in the region’s culture.

James has been visiting Denmark for 40 years and has developed a relationship of his own with the area. He reflects on what’s changed and what’s stayed the same over time, for himself, for Metallica, and for Copenhagen.
And Steffan keeps the European theme going with Robert, who explains why Hellfest is so special in the rock world and why each year is something you have to experience for yourself. Plus, why this year is particularly meaningful to the Trujillo family.

The week of March 13, 2024 on The Metallica Report…
When it comes to Metallica’s creative process, Greg Fidelman has become the “unofficially official” fifth member of the band.
He began his music career in the late ’80s as the lead guitarist of his own group, but Greg really hit his stride on the other side of the studio glass about a decade later. From engineer to mixer to producer, this Grammy-winner has worked with some major heavyweights, including Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Adele, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Slayer.
As you may know - and as Steffan, Renée, and the whole Metallica operation are thankful for - he’s been firmly entrenched in the Metallica camp since 2008, when he joined Rick Rubin’s Death Magnetic production team.

The week of February 21, 2024 on The Metallica Report…
The second installment of two episodes recorded at the band’s creative ground zero for over 20 years: Metallica HQ. Steffan and Renée tour the building with one of its longest inhabitants, Jeff Yeager - webmaster, touring photographer/videographer, and network manager.
Sprinkled with fun facts and historical context, the group makes its way through the artifact-filled workshop, the infamous Some Kind of Monster kitchen, the former pick-and-pack space (yes, all your merch orders used to ship right out of HQ), the office space, into the corridor that houses four separate rooms for you-know-who.
Things wrap up in Studio A, a room that certainly has been transformed many times, but most significantly for the 2020 streaming All Within My Hands benefit concert. As Steff, Renée, and Jeff conclude, something is always happening at Metallica HQ.

This week of February 14, 2024 on The Metallica Report…
The first of two episodes recorded at the band’s creative ground zero for over 20 years: Metallica HQ. Steffan and Renée set up shop in the Jam Room with three people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the Metallica Machine moving.
Jeff Yeager - webmaster, touring photographer/videographer, and all-around “do whatever it takes” guy - brings us back to the first event held at HQ and shares what elements of the building hold particular meaning for him.
Jack Ketcham - one of the unsung heroes of the operation - details a day in the life of a runner, starting with being first in the door and ending as the last to go home.
Kent Matcke - HQ veteran, audio specialist, and glue guy of the team - gives us just a glimpse of how “there is always something” in the life of the HQ recording engineer.
And a man you’re more familiar with, Robert Trujillo, joins the conversation and offers his connection to HQ as not just a rehearsal and recording space but a true home away from home!

A fortuitous call from Kirk sets the stage, framing the metal scene in the early days and the roles Ron, Brian, and KJ played.
Brian recalls the enthusiasm surrounding Metallica’s first album by the band members and, if you will, the founding Metallica Family members - many of whom would be acknowledged decades later. KJ traces Lars’ passion for supporting his peers back to the early ’80s, with one album in particular. Ron further taps into Metallica’s appreciation for music, discussing Lars’ and Cliff’s eclectic tastes.

From fanzines to tape trading to shows at the legendary Stone in San Francisco, these guys have seen it all and are bonded for life to each other and the band through their undying love of music.

The week of December 20, 2023 on The Metallica Report…
We’re going to sit back, relax, and enjoy some of the highlights of the first 20 episodes of The Metallica Report. Remember Lars and that iPod? (think Blue Oyster Cult!) What about Kirk catching waves or James’ love of a good music festival? And who could forget Robert’s night on stage in Dallas?
First, Steffan gives us his review of a night out in the East Bay watching two bands featuring HQ staffers: Dana Lindstrom’s Milk For The Angry and previous pod interviewee Avi Vinocur’s Badnight, Texas (the hard core version of Goodnight, Texas).
Next we’ll revisit interviews from the first 20 episodes as all four guys gave us some great stories about their hobbies, music, being on stage (beachball chaos! guitar solos!) and creating new material for every show. We close out with Robert chiming in to share his Christmas plans with us.
Happy Holidays to all . . . we’ll be back next week to celebrate the New Year!

Steffan and Renée do a deep dive into both the physical and mental iPods of Lars and Rob, as Lars shares more of his musical obsessions and Rob throws down his five favorite funk cuts. They also speak with Auburn University’s Professor of Music and Marching Band Director, Dr. Corey Spurlin.
The musical themed show kicks off with Lars and his deep dive into the heavier side of Lynyrd Skynyrd as he outlines his five favorite lesser known tracks from the Florida band. His other current favorite musical obsession? Warrior Soul, a band he describes as “in that zone zone between hard rock, heavy metal, but a lot of punk attitude and a lot of kind-of not giving a shit.”
To no one’s surprise, Robert is our resident funk-master and he gives us his five favorite funk grooves, including divulging that the Isley Brothers were his very first concert; it was the moment he knew he wanted to be a musician.
Finally we hear from Dr. Corey Spurlin at Auburn University, whose marching band has wowed us all with their half-time show entry to the For Whom The Band Tolls Marching Band competition. Corey tells us how the band chose the songs they performed and that Metallica’s performance with the San Francisco Symphony on S&M2 provided inspiration.

The week of November 29, 2023 on The Metallica Report…
Coming off the holiday, Steffan and Renee dip into their M72 interview archives to give you a more in-depth look at the tour.
First, James thinks back to the first time he saw the massive circular stage mapped out with cones in the middle of an empty MetLife Stadium. He also touches on the logistics of a simple guitar swap and the importance of creating a “presence” on stage for both the band and the fans.
Then, our hosts are joined by a couple of M72 special guests, Zoltan Bathory and Chris Kael of Five Finger Death Punch. Zoltan explains that, despite misconceptions behind the band’s accelerated rise to success, they come from extremely humble beginnings and a militant devotion to hard work.

The week of November 22, 2023 on The Metallica Report…
Inspired by Metallica’s love of covering other artists, Steffan and Renée open things up by musing on tracks they’d like to hear the band tackle.
Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown of M72 special guests Pantera chat about playing for Metallica’s fans - the ones who already know and love them and those who are in for a fun surprise. They also touch on what being on stage feels like now compared to the early days, the vibe that Charlie Benante and Zakk Wylde bring to the band, and, of course, what Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul would think of this chapter of Pantera.
And finally, our hosts check in on Blackened Whiskey's latest collaboration in the Masters of Whiskey series with friend of the pod, Blackened’s Rob Dietrich, and Rabbit Hole’s Kaveh Zamanian. The two Master Distillers discuss their shared passion for thinking outside the box, then Steff and Renée go in for a taste, making their own Harvest Fire cocktails. Don’t worry… they share the recipe, so you can play along at home!

The week of Week of November 1, 2023 on The Metallica Report…
Hot on the heels of last week’s Halloween celebration with a special Hammett-horror-episode, listeners report what their favorite fright-night feature film is.
We have a couple of nuggets from the recently published in-depth and wide-ranging conversation between Steffan and Lars for the band’s online magazine, So What! As the oft-debated St. Anger celebrates its 20th anniversary, Steff acknowledges that, much like that album, 72 Seasons has entered the world following a comparable stretch of unease and uncertainty. With the benefit of hindsight, Lars compares this era’s ability to accept and navigate obstacles with Metallica’s past turmoil.
And with stops in St. Louis and Detroit right around the corner, Steffan and Renée catch up with a few stalwarts of the fan club. Tara Paddock and Kurt Schwarz, local chapter heads of Missouri’s Burnt Ends of Sanity and The Struggle Within Michigan, respectively, are joined by family-favorite Metallica Mom Sarah Sobeck, who has a minivan of international fans joining her and her husband, Pete, on their Metalli-travels. The three share what it’s like to live within the inclusive and supportive global community that Metallica has inspired.

The week of October 25, 2023 on The Metallica Report…
Who better for Steffan and Renée to celebrate Halloween with than The Ripper himself? Our own Kirk Hammett joins the pod to chat about all things horror media, from books and movies to music and makeup.
As Metallica's resident horror expert and Halloween aficionado, most know that Kirk grew up loving pretty much everything that could qualify as spooky subject matter. He’s amassed an immense collection of horror and sci-fi memorabilia and has even held his own Fear FestEvils.
Now, Steff and Renée dig into some of Kirk’s lesser-known horror-facts. Does he prefer a gruesome guts and gore or a suspenseful supernatural story? Do monsters, creatures, and haunted houses really creep him out? Which films hold up to the books they were inspired by? And just how long is his flight from Hawaii to the mainland? In terms of horror movie length, of course.

The week of October 18, 2023 week on The Metallica Report…
Steffan and Renée chat with two of the band’s long-time collaborators: graphic artist Tony Squindo and co-founding member of Goodnight, Texas, Avi Vinocur. Plus, Kirk chimes in about his bluesy, down-and-dirty guitar solo on Goodnight, Texas’ new song, “Runaways.”
Avi fills us in on his unlikely journey from a humble studio runner to Metallica’s go-to side-man for special projects like the All Within My Hands benefit concerts, S&M2 with the San Francisco Symphony, and even an appearance on Howard Stern. Recently, the tables turned, and Avi’s band became the hosts of a special guest musician: our own Kirk Hammett.
Tony Squindo - whose art has graced many a Metallica t-shirt, poster, and even a Monopoly game - chats with Renée about the evolution of his work for the band. The man who once published a book called “Year of the Skull” talks about his fondness for revisiting his previous pieces and shares his favorite thing he’s ever created for a member of Metallica.

The week of October 11, 2023 on The Metallica Report…
Steffan fills us in on what went down in the desert at Power Trip. Guns N’ Roses, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Tool, and Metallica took the stage last weekend, and now James, Kirk, and Robert will take you behind the scenes with their first-hand accounts.
Kirk shares his appreciation for the enduring chemistry between Axl, Slash, and Duff, reminding him of a stripped-down version of GNR from the late ’80s.
James gets into his own fandom, expressing his excitement to see the other bands on the bill - some of his personal favorites.
Robert, fresh off the Power Trip stage, has the final words about the fantastic three days of hard rock, being a fan, and hanging out with friends!

The week of October 4, 2023 on The Metallica Report…
It’s all about Power Trip, this weekend’s massive hard rock festival cranking up at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA. Gracing the bill of the three-day fest are Guns N’ Roses, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Tool, and, of course, Metallica.
It’s hard to imagine now, but Metallica wasn’t always on the poster, let alone at the top! James reflects on the band’s festival journey and what it’s felt like to “move up the ladder.”
Lars recounts 2016’s Desert Trip, the festival featuring legends like Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan that inspired this weekend’s hard rock event. He addresses his admiration for his Power Trip co-headliners and his excitement to get this group of bands in one place. And finally, he touches on his relationship with Guns N’ Roses over the decades and how, yes… he would like to hang out with Axl over a cup of tea!

James gives us insight into what it’s like watching Castor become his own man, from art school to choosing the drums, and how he’s learned to set aside his dad instincts and stay “the hell out of the way.”
Robert reflects on Tye’s first gig with Suicidal Tendencies, his love of music, and his authentic style; “we look like each other, but I think stylistically, he's definitely his own player.”
Finally, fans Yvonne and Jennifer Hernandez, a mother-daughter-duo, share what a mutual love for Metallica has meant for their family.

Our own James and Robert discuss what skateboarding means to them and the inspiration they draw from watching Felipe not only pursue his passion but kick ass doing it. The week of September 6, 2023 on The Metallica Report…
Kirk “The Ripper” Hammett discusses his solos on 72 Seasons and the M72 World Tour, specifically his approach to the song “Shadows Follow.” He also geeks out while recounting hanging out with Pete Townshend, the legendary guitarist of The Who, at the Hollywood Bowl and the Peter Green tribute show at the London Palladium.
Band chef Simon Mitchell checks in from Dallas with the low-down on the Metalli-menu and how he preps fresh, healthy meals to help keep the guys in top-performing shape out on the road. And Renée brings a sweet little update from night one in Phoenix and how the hunger-fighting, guitar-shaped Enlightened ice cream bars were received.
And ICYMI, we tie up loose ends and put any worries to rest about Storm, the four-legged-media-sensation who ventured from her house to SoFi Stadium to join the crowd for night one in LA. We’re happy to report that she’s back home safely and no worse for the wear, aside from maybe a little bit of “wag-lash.”
Finally, we’re wishing James a speedy recovery from COVID-19, which caused the postponement of Phoenix’s night two appearance, which has been rescheduled for this Saturday, September 9.
