Jo Hickey-Hall chats with Dr Neil Rushton about his inexplicable audio experience on Glastonbury Tor in October 2023. He very candidly describes the difficult time he underwent this last winter, following the encounter.

This episode offers our thoughts on what can happen when we journey down to the Underworld. We all go there throughout our lives, some of us more than others. These dark places are familiar to all of us.

 I speak to a man in Auckland New Zealand, who grew up in what was originally native bush land. As a child, he had what sounds like a gnome encounter inside his home. His response to the frightening experience had a profound effect on how he decided to live his life from that point forward.

Our guest's inspiring story suggests what may be possible if we can look beyond our fears and lean into communication with landscape and the non-human beings who reside there.

It feels like an important story for us to hear at this time.

I speak with a woman who encountered a figure on Glastonbury Tor, who has appeared in a number of episodes thus far...The Dark Rider. 

In this and previous episode Ep 76: Otherworldly People: Encounter on the Thames he appears and then disappears. Always in black leather clothing, each time wearing a black helmet with the visor down so that you cannot see his face. He also turned up in another episode, Green Gnome Visitation Changed My Life (Oklahoma) when a man who was a child at the time describes the terror he felt at seeing him appear, when no one else in the room could see him.

Jo is joined by musician Sam McLoughlin who, as a young man aged 17 or 18 experienced an enchantment in a local woodland in Lancashire. 

He and a friend heard what sounded like children’s voices coming from the river. They  experienced orbs and a sense of strange shift in reality, commonly known as the Oz Factor, a term coined by Jenny Randles.

Jo Hickey-Hall speaks to Frank Scannella about his encounter next to the river in Walton-on-Thames in 1982. His story 'Meeting Nicola', was published in the, "It Happened To Me..." section of The Fortean Times (Issue 350, 2017).  This episode was also released as a video on YouTube.

The sense of uncanniness about this meeting has always stayed with Frank. There are many liminal aspects to consider: the proximity to water, crossing a bridge, the time of his life between studies. As well as this, various folklore motifs abound: black dog, dark man, strange stillness in the environment (Oz Factor) and the way that the beings appeared and disappeared in a mysterious manner.

Most of all, there was a sense that one cannot fully describe. But you will know, if you've ever had a brush with the Otherworld.

⭐️ In the bonus episode on Patreon I share related folklore about river-related merfolk, we hear some comparable encounters submitted to Simon Young’s Fairy Census and we end with a particularly unsettling story that was posted on Reddit. It is a strikingly similar experience of a young man who came into contact with a strange man along the river in York, England, featuring lost time and other very strange factors. Both men view their experiences as near misses with beings from the Otherworld and feel lucky that they lived to tell the tale.

A most poignant story about a little boy from Oklahoma who came face to face with a gnome in his bedroom.

As a child he had felt very alone and afraid for much of his childhood but it was an Otherworldly being that reached out and showed him love. Now as an adult, he recalls how this experience, “changed (his) life and the way (he) saw the world”.

Our guest describes a sighting in 2016 in California, which occurred after a plant medicine church meeting. Whilst sitting in his car waiting for a friend, he watched two gnomes, no more than three ft tall in height, appear from a bush one after the other. They 'waddle' across the street and disappear into another bush.

(Apologies for the poor sound quality! I have done the best I can with the file - it was much worse to begin with).

In the exclusive bonus episode on Patreon we hear of a multiple witness sighting of a white glowing human-sized figure after taking part in an indigenous ritual. It was observed on private land and the owner of the land appeared to be aware of the spirits that he shared this space with. The encounter lasted several minutes and the being emitted a 'headlight' type of light which shone into his eyes.

The first appears as Anubis the Egyptian Protector god, while the other is a well-known archetype:  The Hat Man - an entity who has appeared to many people and is traditionally seen as malevolent...though the story shared in this episode provides another perspective.

Our guest describes his extreme childhood experience in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, involving musical enchantment, levitation, loss of time and senses and deep connection to raw nature.

We hear how he was enchanted into the woods and ended up in a potentially life-threatening situation. Despite the intensity of the experience, he hold the view that it opened him up to a new way of seeing the world. A truly remarkable story and a much treasured share.

A second experience was described during our conversation. It is just as amazing as the first and will be released nearer winter solstice.

🧚🏻‍♀️ I chat to a woman originally from the south east of England, about her real experiences with fairy beings.

✨They include childhood levitation, a bedroom based fairy visitation, and a multiple-witness sighting of a tiny humanoid disappearing into a hedge. She describes seeing orbs inside her bedroom as a child as well as lights in trees and we hear the strange case of a fairy-related text message which the sender had not written!

To kick off series 7 we are joined by author, Patrick Harpur who is well known to many of us for his book, Daimonic Reality: A Field Guide to the Otherworld. I also highly recommend reading The Philosopher’s Secret Fire: A History of the Imagination which heds a lot of light on the sorts of experiences we hear about on this show, along with his other non-fiction book, A Complete Guide to the Soul.

Here we talk about Patrick's family’s relationship with the Otherworld and whether an openness to their existence aids the potential for personal encounters. We ponder the eccentricity of our modern western culture in denying the existence of daimons and Patrick offers ideas about which gods may be ruling us at this time.

A woman from San Diego, California shares a whole host of extraordinary encounters with people who took the appearance of human beings but felt decisively, not-of-this-world.

From a strangely terrifying family in a Walmart car park to a disappearing cowboy, you may even find that these stories strike a chord with some odd encounters of your own.

I chat with High Priestess and Bishop of the French Gnostic Church, Amanda Mariamne Radcliffe.

We explore Amanda's experiences with the Divine which include a visitation from 'The Lady' and a number of fairy sightings. She describes her deep connection with the Cathars and how she came to live in 'Cathar Country' in Mont Segur, Occitaine and Rennes Le Bain in Aude, both situated in the South of France.

This episode, full of childhood encounters, holds a particularly enchanting quality. As a sick child lies in bed, he is visited by pixies. On another occasion, at the end of the Second World War, a terrifying goblin appears at the end of his bed. A member of the same family later experiences a bedtime parade of magical wonders. Her resulting dream journeys to a 'Burgundy Kingdom' makes her wish dearly that she could return. 

Some of those experiences are beautiful and wondrous while others are quite unsettling. A further reminder that this podcast is not suitable for children or for those who are sensitive to creepy content.

In 2018, after months of unusual phenomena in her London flat, a woman finally came face to face with the troublesome culprits. During a night time trip to the bathroom she was horrified to see two goblins stacked one atop the other, peering at her from the threshold of the door. 

Since that time, she has struggled to come to terms with the reality of what happened.  In our western society, people are wholly unaccepting that these experiences take place, least of all that they could ever happen in urban areas. 

We discuss the events that finally led to that night, her relationship with the flat which had always unnerved visitors and how the decision to share her story was not taken lightly. 

Is it purely location that invokes these visitations? What other factors are involved? We discuss aspects of liminality including thresholds, stages of life and geographical landmarks.

Another delve into the original interview recordings I made in early 2017 when the Modern Fairy Sightings Project first launched.  Mark Norman and I were at the time researching for the Devon chapter in Simon Young’s book Magical Folk.

One particular woman responded to a poster I'd pinned up in Dartmoor, calling for people to contact with their fairy encounters! We spoke about her family history with fairies and her own understandings of the Otherworld. 

Later on in the show, I share more reported fairy sightings on Dartmoor featured in Janet Bord’s book, Fairies: Real Encounters with Little People.

I speak with paranormal investigator, Kate 'Hare Girl' Ray from YouTube show Hare in the Hawthorn.

Originally hailing from Nottingham, Kate has a particular interest in the Wollaton Gnomes case, and is a published author on the subject. She also writes for Haunted Magazine and creates magnificent mushroom-related art pieces in her spare time!

Kate shares a gnome encounter that took place in her teens at the Uffington White Horse and she describes the time she acted as a mediator between a troubled home owner and an angry French Fae being, for the TV show Help my House is Haunted.  We also discuss the strange potency of this time we are living through.

A multiple witness sighting of a 'walking tree trunk' in the grounds of a university in Brazil, in around 1999/2000.
 
A Brazilian man and his companion simultaneously observed the tree trunk walking along the side of the road. They caught up with it after losing sight and felt certain he had changed into an old man with leathery lined skin "like the tree trunk".

After suffering illness, our guest involved shamanic approaches in his quest to return to full health. During his successful process of recovery he discovered a deep resonance with chanting, which led to an extraordinary experience.
 
 Later, on a trip to Iceland, he encountered a couple who showed up out of the blue and disappeared just as curiously. He has always felt, they were not of this world.

 A man from Washington State describes hearing Santa's Sleigh land on his roof complete with the sounds of sleigh bells, hooves and a heavy sack and footsteps !
 
 At the time he was 20 years old and at college. He had never had any strong belief in Santa and his family generally took a skeptical view on strange phenomenon. To this day, he hasn't told his family but like many others, he is sure of what he heard.
 
 We all have a 'boggle threshold' -  where the idea of extraordinary phenomena is repelled by our brain's filter of improbability, based on our beliefs, experiences and willingness to consider what has previously remained outside our knowledge and level of understanding. 

I had heard stories of people seeing and hearing Santa before but this is the first time I've spoke to someone about their experience.  It turns out that many, many people have had these experiences, either in childhood or as adults.
 
 This was an enlightening chat for me and it has brought a sense of unexpected magic to this holiday. For that I am very grateful. I hope you enjoy it too.

Paul Devereux and his wife Charla shared an unexpected and startling fairy encounter in 2003, during a research trip in Ireland. This event transformed Paul's outlook on the reality of fairy sightings.

Paul is a well-known author and long-time researcher into the study of sound at ancient places, ancient and traditional life-ways, the anthropology and archaeology of consciousness, sacred sites and landscapes, general consciousness studies including psi phenomena, and unusual geophysical events. Paul co-founded and is a previous editor of, 'Time & Mind – The Journal of Archaeology, Consciousness and Culture.

Charla has been researching alongside Paul since the mid-1980s and is an author on wellbeing subjects such as meditation, aromatherapy and lucid dreaming.

Todd Grube is a long-time experiencer and a previous guest from Episode 21, Awakening to Them.

We discuss the apparent upsurge in encounters and people’s personal awakenings.  He describes his observation of an orb-like ship that shot into the sky from a lake near his previous home. He and his wife later experienced entering the ship. After that time he began communicating with what he describes as, 'Star Beings'. 

Todd shares some more recent experiences he's had, with what appear to be yoga deities. He also suggests some meditations and exercises for letting go of old thinking patterns

My guest describes how he supported and encouraged his son's explorations and experiences with beings from the Otherworld. I previously spoke to his son, Tristan, in episode 15 but here we hear about how, as a father he became a scribe for Tristan's mystical encounters. Their moonlit forest walks, packed with extraordinary visions and interactions, were documented between the ages of 11 to 19 and they form a collection called, The Books of Dreams and Visions (B.O.D.A.V.s).

A 74 year old woman who has been psychic all her life describes playing with fairies as a young child in her garden rockery.  In that same garden - a monk's retreat in times past - she  recalls seeing ghostly robed figures wandering around in prayer.  We discuss how psychic abilities seem to run in families and she reveals how she was once requested to read a nun's aura!

My guest, Paolo Sammut is a paranormalist and a magician based in the south west of England. Paolo has had many supernatural experiences over the years, some of which we would recognise as fairy encounters. He chats to me about the time he was awoken by a very angry fairy, possibly a hobgoblin. On other occasions, he and other family members saw beings in the house that looked like other members of the family who were not present at the time. These sound like doppelgangers but in folklore, particularly Irish folklore they are known as fetches.

I chat with Mike Clelland, researcher of the mysterious connections between owls, synchronicities and UFOs, from ancient times to the present day.  His first book, The Messengers (2015) details his personal journey and provides a collection of first-hand accounts of contact experiences. 

During our discussion, Mike shares his own personal experiences including a childhood memory of a UFO sighting and a lost time event.  Later, a series of synchronistic incidents involving owls, propelled him on a course of research into the meaning of these powerful connections.  His story resonates deeply with extraordinary experiencers of all kinds.

This episode is a truly spectacular personal childhood experience.  A young child has a visitation from a host of fairies, which begins a whole series of events. Many of us have memories of extraordinary encounters as young children and hearing these particular experiences resonated very deeply with me as it will for many listeners.

In this episode we hear the second part of an interview with a woman in the UK who has had many extraordinary experiences in her life.

Having described communing with an intelligent blue light in her home (Episode 28), we now hear of another deep event which took place two years later. This time our guest came face-to-face with what we might describe as, tall 'Guardian' folk in an ancient wood. A transformative fairy experience took place that very night.

A woman in the UK describes an extended 'conversation' with an intelligent blue light form which appeared in her home. The experience featured lost/altered time and a sense of innate familiarity. 

Just what did this Otherworldly being of consciousness come to tell her? And were previous geometric light visitors connected in some way?

Anthropological researcher and lecturer, Jack chats to me about his own fairy experience and his sister’s childhood encounter in the Tanat Valley, Wales. In this episode we hear from a woman living in Wales who had a visit from a green man while gardening. Later, after some 'goings on' in the house, she had to ask him to leave. She also describes how she watched The Gentry ride by near her home one day.  We discuss these and some other extraordinary experiences. 

It always amazes me how many people have had something strange and inexplicable take place in their life. It seems like the majority of people can report at least one such happening. The world is a mysterious place! Let’s not forget that. There appears to be much more going on here than we generally take for granted.

This episode is a deep chat about a number of extraordinary events and contact that my guest has experienced. The subject of a UFO/orb experience is covered early on but we do return to the subject of Fae. There’s so much cross over between fairy experiences and alien encounters and it’s been generating a lot of discussion for some time now. In this episode, my guest shares an experience which invoked a sense of indescribable longing. There are many stories in folklore of those who visited Fairyland never to return and those that did, often pined for Fairyland ever after (see 'The Fairy Dwelling on Selena Moor' on Episode 18 show notes). Some stories speak of a deep sense of yearning that draws folk to the precipice of no-return before something snaps them out of a trance. In many cases they are drawn in by a strange Otherworldly music and it was this form of enchantment that our guest experienced during lockdown last year.

In this episode I speak to a fellow researcher, Thomas Freese. Thomas is also an author, a storyteller and an artist. To date he’s written 11 books and 200 articles.  Much of his research is focused on people’s extraordinary encounters with ghosts, nature spirits, angels, fairies, and multidimensional beings.

In his storytelling role, Thomas visits schools and finds that  children often want to tell him about their own strange experiences.  We discuss this and some of the many Otherworldly encounters that he has collected over the years.

Jo talks to an Australian lady who recalls her first fairy encounter as a very young child. She had experienced deep trauma and found herself in some dreadfully sad situations.

This episode includes excerpts from The B.O.D.A.V.'s (The Books of Dreams and Visions). It's a personal collection of fairy encounters and vivid dreams,  experienced by a young man from the age of 11 to his late teens, provoked by night time forest walks with his father. Having had some awareness and interest in the Otherworlds himself, his father had encouraged him to journal these experiences.

Our guest, now in his mid-twenties and undertaking a Master's in biological science, talks to Jo about re-reading the journals and some of the events that took place.

In the last episode of series one, I chat with Dr Neil Rushton, author of two fairy-related novels and fairy experience investigator. We discuss my various musings during this series and Neil shares his own fairy experiences. He also offers his perspective on why and how people see fairies and how this differs to the reductionist, materialist worldview on the matter. In this episode we hear about an encounter which took place en route to a Wiccan ritual in a large park in England. It’s a lovely share, as the experience was so gloriously matter-of-fact. Are fairies simply an aspect of Nature that we don’t currently understand? Do they pop up unpredictably  or are there circumstances which make it more likely? In this episode we hear from a guest who shares his childhood experience of meeting a fairy. The encounter took place in his bedroom one morning while he was reading alone.  He finds it hard to access a clear memory of the entire event but the parts he does remember are of great significance to him.  In this case, our guest regrets how the experience was borne out and this has formed the basis of a decision to try and reconnect with the being. We discuss this sense of regret and how the memories began to piece together for him later, to become more meaningful in adulthood.
