In this week's episode of 'Moments of Mood', I discuss how great portrait photography is about connecting and collaborating with the person or people in front of you, not just mastering technical skills.
I get a lot of questions on how to photograph people, and of course it's not that simple - we are complex beings, all coming from different places, different experiences and different perceptions of the world. To expect to be able to control that is a fallacy. But so is thinking that the equipment or technical aspect of the experience is the most important.
Listen to this short monologue about why.

In this new episode of Moments of Mood, we're taking a break from guest interviews to dive into another rant, by me. Yep, this time it's the incessant topic of the narrow focus we have around photography equipment...
Creativity beats gear, hands down, all the time. No exceptions. Born from a plethora of comments, messages and questions over years posting images, the most common questions I have received is "what camera/lens did you use" or "what settings did you use for this photo"?. I want to put forward why I'm a bit bored of this being the most popular question and why it is perceived so important for beginners in photography. I was that person, so I'm not judging any individual, more the system and societal constructs we (and the big manufacturers) have created around the sector. It detracts from so much potential beauty and creativity.
Driven by the belief that gear is the key to mastering photography, many photographers today forget that the real magic does not come from expensive equipment, but from the artist's vision, creativity and ability to capture stories. My rant also draws on insights from iconic photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson or Annie Leibovitz, which are great examples of how understanding light, composition and 'moment' will always beat the technical features of a new camera.
Am I wrong to be fed up with this topic now?

Pat Kay is a renowned photographer, content creator and now podcast host. So it seemed apt to hone in on the dissonance between art and content creation, and if indeed it's just an illusion.
Pat, with his wealth of experience across various creative domains, also talks frankly about the homogenization of 'art' in today's social media-driven culture. And together we discuss a label transformation from 'artist' to 'content creator' where we can be commercially savvy, without losing the soul of artistic integrity. It's a candid, but needed, look at the compromises needed to flourish in an era where digital presence is king.
We discuss many other topics as well, including the importance of digital assets, business-drivers in photography, the difference between good and great, and the future of photography in general. Pat also shares with me his transition to vlogging and podcasting, and how building a new community in Japan has sparked both personal growth and creative rejuvenation. We touch on the ethical quandaries of contributing to social media and consider our artistic responsibilities amidst the rising tide of AI in creative fields.

In this week's episode of The MOOD Podcast, I jumped online with Casey Fatchett.
For more than 20 years, people have been paying him to chase the love of photography. In that time, he's photographed more than 700 weddings, thousands of portrait sessions. worked with big brands, A-list celebrities, as well as many small businesses and regular folks.
His rather playful title as a 'love documentarian' doesn't just embody his work; it narrates the stories of relationships he's framed, from the quiet affections of a golden anniversary to the lively chaos of wedding day bliss. In my conversation with him, we journey through the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of a photographer deeply rooted in the business of capturing, well, love.
Casey doesn't just stop at the click of the shutter; his wealth of knowledge extends to the crucial entrepreneurial spirit needed to navigate the competitive photography scene. For those with a camera in hand and dreams of making it their livelihood, this episode is a goldmine of wisdom, from setting rates to handling the unexpected. We also wade into the deeper waters of social media's impact on our mental health, unpacking strategies to harness these powerful platforms for good, without letting them dictate our self-worth.
Stress, boundaries, and the courage to utter a clear "no" are lifelines in the high-stakes game of professional photography. As creatives, we often blur the lines between work and passion, but as Casey shares, managing anxiety and setting non-negotiable limits is what keeps the love for the craft burning bright.

With his expertise in geography, Trevor adeptly captures the fading customs and diverse environments shaping our global heritage. In this episode of The MOOD Podcast, I talk with photographer and filmmaker Max Lowe. When Max opens up about his personal odyssey through the lens of his camera, it's hard not to be drawn into the profound depths of his storytelling. As we discuss his film 'Torn', an intimate exploration of his family's narrative in the wake of his father's tragic death, we're reminded of the raw power behind capturing life's complexities in art. In this profound conversation, we unlock the mysteries of character-driven narratives and the shifting tides of journalism, painting a picture of how personal tragedy can morph into a shared experience of catharsis and healing.
We also talk about his latest venture in documentary filmmaking, a moving piece called 'Camp Courage', a film of sanctuary for the souls touched by the conflict in Ukraine. Additionally, we discuss the delicate balance between creativity and public reception, the fine line between staying authentic to one's vision and embracing external perspectives, as well as the responsibility borne by filmmakers and journalists alike, underscoring the imperative to portray narratives with both integrity and factual accuracy, especially in a world rife with media distortion and fleeting news cycles.

When I first stumbled upon John Raymond's mesmerising artwork at a hotel in Bali, little did I know that fate would bring us together on my podcast for an intimate exploration of his world. Listen as we unravel the vibrant threads of John's life as an abstract expressionist painter, whose journey from visual communication design to crafting emotive masterpieces is as colourful as his canvases. John walks us through the nuances of his artistic process, explaining how his inner musings are reflected in the deliberate emptiness of his work. His story is not just about the paint and the canvas, but also the stereotypes and challenges he bravely navigated in Bandung's art scene to boldly claim his space as an artist.
As John shares the triumphs and trials of his first solo exhibition and the strategic embrace of social media, we reach a consensus: success is personal, intrinsic, and measured by the depths of connection forged with an audience. It's a heartfelt testimony to the journeys artists embark upon, often speaking a language not their own, yet one that resonates universally with those who witness their creations.
Join us, and be inspired by the tale of an artist who paints not just pictures, but poignant stories that linger long after the colours dry. Furthermore, watch the YouTube video (link below) for this episode where we cover behind-the-scenes footage of John creating a painting for me in the studio.

Have you ever found yourself mesmerized by the power of an authentic story, one that reverberates through your very core and changes your perspective? My latest episode features the passionate documentary filmmaker Jakub Chlouba, who takes us on an intimate voyage behind his lens, revealing how his personal curiosity about the world informs the impactful narratives he captures. As we traverse the landscape of storytelling, Jakub unpacks the delicate equilibrium between pursuing one's artistic passions and the practicality of making a living, providing a nuanced look at the life of a creator straddling these two worlds.
Navigating the influence of social media on the arts, we dissect whether platforms like YouTube and Instagram serve as liberators or jailers of creativity. Jakub offers a candid critique of the push and pull between crafting content for algorithms and remaining true to artistic vision, igniting a discussion on the importance of intentionality in an era where visibility often trumps authenticity. Through this exploration, we confront the yearning for creators with unique voices to rise above the digital noise and claim their space in the crowded realm of visual storytelling.
Finally, we contemplate the profound essence of living with purpose. Jakub shares insights into his personal evolution and how defining one's intentions can shape not only the work we do but also the legacy we leave behind. Step into the shadowy dance of chemicals and light with Prague-born Stephan Kotas, as he unveils the transformative art of Wet Plate (Collodion) Photography amidst Indonesia's tropical landscape. Stephan draws us into his world, where the pursuit of travel photography morphed into a dedication to a craft that is as enchanting as it is exacting. His transition from the immediacy of digital to the deliberation of Wet Plate is not just a tale of artistic evolution but a homage to a medium that insists on intentionality with each frame.
Within the studio walls of our latest episode, we break down the process and intricacies of the entire Wet Plate process and its photographic cultural preservation, the rich tapestry of Indonesian heritage as its background. His large-format silver plates are not mere images; they are timeless narratives etched in silver, celebrating the beauty of imperfection and the authenticity of momentary capture. Stephan's commitment to eco-consciousness ties the past to the present, crafting a dialogue on how traditional methods can influence our digital dominion.
As we close this chapter, we extend our deepest appreciation to Stephan for sharing his passion and expertise. His venture into the rare art form of Wet Plate Photography challenges us to ponder the essence of time and the permanence of the images we hold dear. With a heart full of inspiration, I eagerly anticipate a personal glimpse into Stephan's studio, where the alchemy of wet plate photography comes alive, capturing history through the lens of the present.

Life's crossroads can be perplexing, especially when pitted against the allure of quick success, burnout and creative blocks, versus lasting impact.
A disclaimer right from the start; this isn’t a photography-specific conversation. But I do hope it is inspiring and educational - it’s certainly a discussion that I think can be applied to almost every human on the planet, whether you’re a creative or not.
Mikele Kuhar is a men's clarity coach and business mentor, and I have worked one-on-one with him for a while. During this conversation, we embark on a profound exploration as we unravel the threads of personal growth and resilience in the face of burnout and other challenges we all face in the work and personal life arenas. We talked about a few 'turning points' that reshaped Mikele's understanding of purpose and success beyond the glare of financial metrics, as well as the intricate dance of managing expectations, balancing career ambitions with personal life, and the emotional rollercoaster that comes with the curated reality of social media.
We also traverse Mikele's own transformative journey from an aspiring entrepreneur to a beacon of guidance for men navigating the often stormy seas of life and work. We discuss how his coaching venture, 'The Broject,' evolved from a men's accessories line into a vital platform for authentic conversations about self-care, community support, and the quest for happiness.
Finally, we strip away the layers of societal norms to examine the deeper aspects of emotional wellbeing. From the power of language in shaping our emotional experiences to the art of mindful photography, we touch upon various facets of living a life aligned with one's true desires. Whether you find yourself in the hustle of city life or the serene backdrop of Bali, this episode is an invitation to redefine success.
For this episode, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas - that you so much for listening and supporting The MOOD Podcast. It is such a privilege to make these episodes and if even a small piece of them resonate just with 1% of your soul, I am the luckiest man alive.
For all of you out there who might be having a tough Christmas, a lonely time, or just a difficult few days and weeks, I want to say I send you my heartfelt wishes - I’ve had my own share of difficult festive periods and my heart goes out to you. I sincerely hope this episode might bring you some comfort in those difficult times.

Pandhu Waskitha, aka 'Backpacker Tampan', is an Indonesian travel photographer with a heart for storytelling, and he shared with me his remarkable evolution from a backpacker sharing tales on 'ASKfm' to a social media sensation. He doesn't like to just snap photos—he weaves vibrant narratives that celebrate the spirit of adventure and the soul of places far and wide. My conversation with him peeled back the layers of Pandhu's artistry, revealing his battle for creative authenticity in an ever-changing digital landscape that's often more about the viral hit than the story behind it.
Navigating the tides of social media, he talked about the seismic shift from still images to the dizzying world of Instagram reels and TikTok's bite-sized content. Even as the ground shifts beneath our feet, he tries to stand firm, marrying his vision with the demands of new platforms without sacrificing the integrity of his work. Together, we uncover the delicate balance between embracing market trends and staying true to the craft, and how Pandhu's keen eye has captured more than just images, but the ethos of the communities and cultures he's encountered.
The episode culminates with a peek into Pandhu's philanthropic dreams and a touching reflection on travel's profound impact on personal growth. His stories are a mosaic of humanity, from the market vendor in Bali whose hope was kindled during tough times to the ambitious goal of building a school on Sumba Island. It's not just a conversation about photography; it's about the power to 'give back', the transformative lessons learned from each project, and a gratitude for the ability to inspire and be inspired. Join me for this thought-provoking episode that's as much about capturing the perfect shot as it is about cherishing the journey itself.

Ever wondered what success in photography truly looks like? This episode prompts you to rethink the conventional definition of success as we journey through the captivating photographic landscapes of renowned artists like Annie Liebovitz, Richard Avedon, and others. We delve into their storytelling prowess, their knack for unveiling the hidden hues of personality, and their immersive exploration of urban landscapes. I identify the unique perspectives of a few of these artists and how they lend an unconventional and deeper meaning to success.
Navigating the ever-evolving digital world, it's worth pondering the role of social media platforms as essential tools for artists to showcase their craft and connect with audiences. There are of course potential pitfalls of equating success to the number of likes or followers. Drawing inspiration from photographers who leverage digital platforms to inspire rather than merely chase digital accolades, I underline that true success in photography hinges on personal fulfillment, passion, and making a difference.
I hope this small commentary helps you redefine the contours of success in the world of photography and art.

In these brief 'Moments of Mood', I take a few minutes to share my thoughts on a specific subject, and in today's commentary I ponder how many of us think about the techniques and practices of photography. As such do absorb a large opportunity cost compared to thinking first about art, before we even think about photography, and thus do we miss out on greater expression, boundless creativity and higher inspirations.
This episode dismantles the myth that technical prowess is all it takes to create visually stunning photographs. I advocate for an approach that puts expressional creativity at the heart of your photography, shifting the focus from mere technique to creating art. I touch on the principles of art, investigating how to incorporate elements like form, texture, space, balance, contrast, and color into your work, subsequently transforming your photographs into powerful pieces of art that resonate with viewers on an emotional level.

Fin is a German artist who carries himself on creating 'art', not 'content'. With this attitude in mind he's created art for high-end brands such as Porsche, Tourism Australia, Tesla, Logitech, Jeep, Suzuki, Tourism Tasmania and many more. He thinks very much outside the box – painting beyond the lines every time he gets behind the camera as a photographer, director and filmmaker. Fin sees things differently – he's colour blind - with an eye for the beautiful and the remarkable. He co-founded Australian and New Zealand-based production house 1814 Creative, where he's also a director, photographer and editor alongside other talented artists who draw inspiration from the natural world. He's learned the value of high-quality storytelling for clients across tourism, lifestyle and automotive industries – industries that promote freedom.

George is a designer, 3D artist and architect from the UK, now living and working in Bali. We held conversations about how deeply he is fascinated by the integration of nature and architecture, and we moved into discussing how AI can take designers and architects to a new level of creativity and innovation.
George is an intelligent and very interesting person, even if his voice doesn't make you think it! Hahaha. So take it all in and listen until the end.

Nikola Kostic is a Serbian-born photographer who has called Bali home for the last 20 years. Although now more into video and film-making, photography is still his greatest passion – in fact he often thinks that it is the very reason for his existence. He experiments with different styles and subjects, but his main fascination is cultures in transition. With the islands of the Indonesian archipelago, and the vibrant countries of south east Asia on his doorstep he is never short of inspiration, and spends much of his time on the road (and on the ocean) capturing the magic of life through a series of fleeting moments. See some of Nikola's video work on his YouTube channel @whybalifilm and his photography portfolio on his site http://nikolakostic.com.
