Our Valentine’s Day celebration is over a month late and still not what we intended, but we won’t let that stop us! As a gift for his wife Adrienne, Joshua chose an adaptation of a story by one of her favorite authors, Dorothy Sayers. “The Cave of Ali Baba,” was an early episode of Suspense that tells the story of an infiltration into a secret cabal of thieves. The tale is notable for featuring a fantastical invention that would someday become reality. (Learn more about this at https://blog.oup.com/2016/03/dorothy-sayers-voice-print-vsi/) Will the intruder’s deception be discovered? Why is there so much dancing? Would Adrienne have liked this? We keep surpassing Patreon goals! This week, we are cerebrating with episodes featuring the beginning and end of Suspense! For the first part, we listen to the (sort-of) audition episode presented as part of the Forecast series in July of 1940. Alfred Hitchcock (sort of, not really) presented this adaptation of the short story and novel by Marie Belloc Lowndes, the same source material he adapted for his 1927 silent film, The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog. Based on the Jack the Ripper murders, this story depicts a mysterious zealot who who rents a room a working class London couple. Could this stranger be the murderous figure known as the Avenger? Why did this episode receive so many complaints? Are we being stalked by Bromo-Seltzer? Listen for yourself and find out!
We have passed another Patreon goal and to celebrate we are exploring strange new territory: classic radio comedies! This week we listen to three different comedic takes on our usual suspense and horror diet. First, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis get the creeps with Peter Lorre! Then Stan Freberg parodies a beloved crime drama! And finally, Jack Benny puts his own spin on a classic horror anthology! Can these jokes still be funny after all these years? Are visual gags better when you can’t see them? Which comedy icon threatens to tear this podcast apart? Listen for yourself and find out!

Happy holidays, everyone! Please join us as we celebrate with Campbell Playhouse’s 1939 version of A Christmas Carol featuring Orson Welles and Lionel Barrymore. She has an improbable tale about a man who believes the power of concentration and will can accomplish supernatural feats. Could this man manifest the abilities he claimed? What happened at the bank to make this woman so distraught? Is this story flawed because it is a typical Arch Oboler story or is that what makes it awesome? Listen for yourself and find out!

The Society is settled in for Christmas with some hot cocoa and a classic Charles Dickens ghost story, adapted by Suspense! In this case, we’re listening to Dickens’ other classic ghost story, “The Signal-Man.” In this episode Sarah Churchill plays a reporter whose fascination with trains leads her to interview an old rail worker. She discovers the man is haunted by strange visions—visions which somehow involve her! Do these omens warn of tragic accidents or is the trauma of these accidents the source of these visions? Are there moments in life that we must simply accept our fate? Does this story capture the true spirit of Christmas? Listen for yourself and find out! Please note that we’ll be taking a couple weeks off for the holidays, but we will be back in January! In the meantime, here’s a link to the BBC’s A Ghost Story for Christmas adaptation of The Signal-Man!
The Weird Circle brought a little something to our holiday party, the supernatural tale of a Christmas descent into desperation with a man named “Markheim!” Based on the short story by Robert Louis Stevenson, this Christmas classic features a young man confronting the dark impulses of his own dark reflection. Was anyone else invited to this party? If this gift doesn’t work, can it be exchanged? Listen for yourself and find out!
(UPDATE! One of our astute listeners (thank you, Mike!) noticed that we have misidentified the origin of this recording! This is in fact from the 1955 run of The Clock, recorded in Australia. Our humblest apologies for the error.) The Society finally has finally turned their attention to The Clock! Howard Williams has moved to a small town, where everyone seems considerate and happy to help a neighbor, but chance and coincidence have conspired to turn a friendly favor into a death sentence in this episode entitled, “A Helping Hand!” What’s the worst that could happen when you help a stranger? Is the perfect murder truly possible or will there always be a slip up? Who would write a story about a pile of potatoes? Listen for yourself and find out!
Our thanks to Scott for suggesting “Yours Truly, Jack the Ripper” from Mystery Playhouse! The series, hosted by Peter Lorre, re-purposed other radio series (in this case Molle Mystery Theater) for the Armed Forces Network. This particular episode was an adaptation of a short story by Robert Bloch about a hunt for London’s notorious killer in 1945 Chicago! Could Jack the Ripper still be claiming victims over fifty years after his (or her!) reign of terror in London? Can this bloodthirsty killer ever be caught? What dark magic grants Joshua the time management powers to read short stories? Listen for yourself and find out!
Once again, it’s later than the we think and we are listening to Lights Out! This time, we indulge in “Revolt of the Worms,” an episode from the Arch Oboler era of the series. In the face of a war-torn world, brilliant scientist Charles Prentice retreats to develop the perfect rose. But even in his far-off laboratory there is something monstrous in the earth. Based on the title, can you guess what happens? How long is too long for a death scene? Is this really less gruesome than Murder Castle? Listen for yourself and find out!
We may not know much about the 1984 BBC series, Spine Chillers, but that won’t stop the Society from checking out “Dracula in White” by Peter Redgrove. A journalist investigates strange stories of prisoners disappearing from a prison, but soon finds herself caught by the man known as Dracula in White! Do the missing inmates have anything to do with the delicious canned meat produced within the prison? Can a story have too many details? How does this relate to The Food of the Gods? Listen for yourself and find out!
Monster Month concludes with Mercury Theatre on the Air’s adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula! Orson Welles was only 23 years old when his version of this classic tale was broadcast, featuring himself in the title role. A mysterious Transylvanian noble comes to England, and everywhere he goes, death follows. Can those victims transformed into undead things be saved? Will this adaptation’s adherence to the original novel elevate it above other versions of Dracula? Will we once again forget to discuss the remarkable musical direction of Bernard Hermann? Listen for yourself and find out!

This week the Society listens to a suggestion from Abby, who told us about an episode of Crime Classics! This series blends dark comedy and historical tales of true crime. In this episode, a German ne’er-do-well finds himself accused of four murders and he may not want to prove himself innocent. During the discussion afterwards, Tim makes a ridiculous claim that he found a link to the actual story that was the basis for this production. There is no such link. However, here’s a couple other bits of useful information: Bad Luck Schleprock and schlemiel and schlimazel. What is the odd bit of trivia regarding this show?
