As is customary with the New World Pictures podcast we take a deep dive into a movie that starts slow and ends with a 40 minute car chase scene that might be one of the best ever filmed.  It's a really great scene.  You should watch it.

Erica reveals to Ryan and Marc that her Uncle owned a peculiar car security company who's jingle may or may not have been the inspiration of "Welcome to the Jungle". Roger Corman passed away on May 9, 2024, and we knew we wanted to do something special to commemorate his passing, so we are lucky to be joined by director/editors Allan Arkush (HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD, ROCK 'N' ROLL HIGH SCHOOL), Allan Holzman (FORBIDDEN WORLD), and Tony Randel (HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER 2) to discuss their careers and memories working with Roger. It's the return of Marc's Miserable MARVELous May where we talk about the Marvel movies and TV shows made by New World Pictures.  We've invited Peter Fluet from Ep. 85: Generation X and Ep. 33: Star Crystal to kick off this special month with the memorable yet hard-to-find TV pilot, Power Pack. 

This episode is full of New World Pictures Podcast "firsts".  It's the first Marvel movie or TV show that none of us had seen before.  It's the first movie or TV show we've discussed with a runtime of under 30 minutes, but that didn't stop us for talking about it for a full hour!

This episode is a prime example of your hosts and Peter simply having a good time and it shows.  You get it all.  Peter Breaks down the terrifying premise of Power Pack comic book while also creating an account on Letterboxd in real time.  Erica does a bang up horse imitation.  Ryan shares his trials and tribulations with being the new kid at school.  We all share horror stories about trying to make a phone call during the dark ages when homes had one phone, and it was in the kitchen. Plus, you, the listener, get a sneak peak into the our collective upbringings including how proper parents relax after a hard days work. We also talk about Power Pack.

All good things must come to an end, and so we must say goodbye to #AprilSweeps! But not before we have one last hurrah at Tom Clancy's OP CENTER! Or is it Tom Clancy and Steve Pieczenik's OP CENTER? Don't worry, because your hard-working hosts are going to get to the bottom of it all as they dig in to this mini-series adaptation created by New World Television. They're even bringing in the big guns: Human Resources! Listen as they discuss the difficulties of that first day at work, questionable accents, and the important work of one incredible woman. It's #Aprilsweeps where we celebrate the TV movies made by New World Television.  We're kicking things off with 1989's False Witness starring Phylicia Rashad (The Cosby Show) and Philip Michael Thomas (Miami Vice).  Lynne Jacoby (Phylicia Rashad) is a district attorney investigating the attempted murder of a popular daytime TV talk show host not unlike luminaries like Sally Jessy Raphael.  Bobby Marsh (Philip Michael Thomas), an Assistant District Attorney and Jacoby's lover, joins the investigation and shows the world that not all investigators are good at their job.  

What lacks in real suspense is more than made up for with uncomfortable shoulder kissing.  We learn that Marc doesn't recognize the difference between CSI and Law & Order, Erica talks about the many musical roles Philip Michael Thomas was up for, Ryan struggles to pronounce "Phylicia" and we debate which is the best Miami Tourism Board theme song. 

You will want to witness this episode.  

It's that time of year when we celebrate the work of director/producer Roger Corman, by watching some of his past work and report it back to each other!  Will Marc, Ryan, and Erica watch the same movie or will they, as they have from the very first Roger Corman Birthday Celebration, not watch the same film? You will have to listen to find out! This episode comes live from the New World cafe, with a smattering of fans there to join the celebration.

Our sub-series Convince Me returns after a long hiatus to close out #MarchMadness as we say goodbye to the sports movies of New World Pictures. But will the co-host who adores this blend of Looney Tunes and National Basketball Academy star Michael Jordan be able to convince the other co-hosts to love it? You'll have to listen to find out! We continue #MarchMadness with 1987's HEART starring Brad Davis (MIDNIGHT EXPRESS), Frances Fisher (UNFORGIVEN) and Steve Buscemi (EVERY OTHER MOVIE YOU LIKE). 

At the heart of HEART lies Eddie, a boxer beset by misfortune who seeks the elusive "big win." More than just possessing a formidable right hook, Eddie is distinguished by his immense drive and unwavering heart.  Get it?

Like a lot of boxing movies, HEART leads up to a final big fight, but there's a trick.  A mobster has bribed Eddie's promoter, Nicky (Steve Buscemi), and manager, Buddy (Frank Adu) to fix the fight.  If this sounds like THE PRIZE FIGHTER without the comic sensibilities of Tim Conway and Don Knotts you would be right.  Also, there's no musical number in HEART.

While Eddie gets himself into fighting shape, we talk about smelling salts, difficult breakups and the value of having a generous vacation policy.  Marc uses the opportunity to talk about another unrelated movie he likes and Erica brings up a new angle for her eventually-to-be-made movie, STEAMIN'.  This episode has something for everyone.

We continue #MarchMadness with a movie that's not exactly about sports per se, but does feature a lot of running which is not just a form of self-torture, as some might think, but a sport! The film is a passion project for actor Ronny Cox, who also co-wrote the movie with his wife Mary, and depicts Cox and two other runners as they become targets of a survivalist militant group in the New Mexico desert!  M. Emmet Walsh leads the group who warns of the terrifying, and wholly unexplained, "crunch" that is coming for us all,   We also discuss Marc's new side podcast and nutrition drink, Erica feels good about a certain life choice, and Ryan gets grossed out by feet! Don't miss this discussion of a rarely discussed New World film!

Welcome to our first episode of #MarchMadness where we will talk about all the sports themed movies released by New World Pictures. Kicking off the month is 1979's THE PRIZE FIGHTER, starring funny guys Tim Conway and Don Knotts in their first non-Disney pairing! Join us for this family-friendly comedic romp (sorry kids, no titty count) as we debate such hot topics as carnivals versus fairs, is LITTLE NICKY a good movie, and take a deep dive into the pros and cons of investing in glue. So many things you will love, and perhaps some things you'll agree with us, you hated! All this and more in a sporty episode you will not want to miss!

We wrap up our celebrated #febWARary with 1988's Hell Hunters directed by Ernst Ritter von Theumer.  Hell Hunters follows a team of Nazi hunters - Maud Adams (Octopussy), Candice Daly (The Young and the Restless), and Romulo Arantes (Blame it on Rio) - as they attempt to stop a former Nazi played by Stewart Granger (King Solomon's Mines) from unleashing a deadly poison that will turn people into zombies.  

Take away the Nazi angle and Hell Hunters sounds surprisingly similar to the John Stamos / Gene Simmons masterpiece, "Never Too Young to Die".  If you thought that movie was horny, this movie takes it to a whole new level.  You see, the jungle is so full of life because it's so horny and our team of Nazi hunters spend a lot of time in the jungle.  They also attempt to make sweet, sweet love under a gushing waterfall in what might be the best(?) sex scene we've seen since Crystal Heart.

Erica also makes a compelling case that spreadable butter is the ultimate aphrodisiac.  We talk a lot about spreadable butter and unibrow guy and loose airport security during the 1980s.  Like Hell Hunters, this episode goes to a lot of unexpected places. 

We continue #FebWARary with director Bruce Beresford's BREAKER MORANT, which covers the very well-known (to Americans) Second Boer War. We attempt to offer a small background on the War as we discuss this Academy Award-nominated film, which follows three soldiers court-martialed by their own military. Also, Erica discovers the movie was based on true events (but also, frustratingly, a play), Marc can't stop thinking about AGAINST ALL ODDS, and all three hosts reveal their own personal code.

We return to #FebWARary for a Roger Corman/Cirio Santiago film that New World DIDN'T release, but could have! The film, one of Santiago's many Namsploitation films, is at least filled with action and the debut of Robert Patrick, the eventual T-1000 of James Cameron's T2. We sharpen our gaze towards THE EYE OF THE EAGLE as Ryan takes us on a deep dive of the film's soundtrack, Erica points out the unique costumes, and Marc attempts to remember a single character name.  

R.J. Kizer returns to the podcast! A longtime New World Pictures editor, R.J. made his directorial debut with the American scenes that were inserted into GODZILLA 1985, New World's re-edit of Toho's THE RETURN OF GODZILLA.  We discuss how he became involved with the project, what it was like working with Raymond Burr, why GODZILLA 1985 never made it to DVD, as well as why stories about other New World projects like BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, UP FROM THE DEPTHS, SPACE RAIDERS and even HELLRAISER! This is an in-depth look into the making of a New World film, from working with Roger Corman to working with GODZILLA 1985 producer Tony Randel and the 2nd New World ownership group! Don't miss this amazing conversation with a highly-entertaining New World veteran! 

We kick off #FebWARary with 1983's Last Plane Out, a semi-fictionalized account of the events that took place days before the Sandinista's removed Anastasio Somoza from power in Nicaragua. It stars Jan-Michael Vincent (Airwolf), Julie Carmen (In the Mouth of Madness) and Mary Crosby whose character shot JR in TV's Dallas. Sounds exciting, right? 

Wrong.

But, what is exciting is the announcement of our new airline, Air Erica.  It's exactly what NWPPVIP's have been asking for.  Air Erica is putting the "f" back into flying".  And by "f" we mean "fun".  That is unless you brought a chess board because we all know what that leads to.

Looking for onboard entertainment?  Each flight features its own DJ (DJ Emergency Exit) spinning beats from takeoff to landing.  The plane doesn't land until the DJ Emergency Exit says so. 

What about movies?  Air Erica has you covered.  You can choose from "Ice Pirates" or "Waterworld".  Staying hydrated is important on Air Erica.

Finally, Godzilla returns! And this time, he's sleepier than ever! 

After 9 years away from the box office, Japanese film studio Toho decided they need to expedite another GODZILLA movie and created 1984's THE RETURN OF GODZILLA. That film ended up in the hands of New World Pictures, who chopped it up and added extra American footage starring none other than Raymond Burr, who appeared in the Americanized version of the original Japanese movie, and the result is GODZILLA 85, a movie only New World could make! We'll discuss alternate ways of dispersing Godzilla, birds, the film's unique marketing strategy, cadmium, and, of course, Dr. Pepper! 

Joining us is a returning guest, writer and performer Ali Davis, who brings with her a love of GODZILLA movies and many questions about the film's (surprisingly) confusing plot! Don't miss the discussion of this New World classic.

This movie has everything.  Is it a horror movie?  Is it a sci-fi movie?  Is it a comedy?  Is it a producer's attempt to showcase their enviable car collection?  The answer to all these questions is, "yes".  

We talk about the sadly overlooked traveling model industry, the lasting appeal of 1950's diners, and the challenges with using metal plates instead of band aids.  We also talk about boners more in this episode then ever before so you have that to look forward to.  We also debate whether Josie (the lead ghost in the movie) is trying to seduce Matt (Ron Palillo) for love or just so that he'll take over her daily chores.  

This movie ranks high on our "fun meter".  If you liked ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE, then you owe yourself to take HELLGATE out for a spin.  Just watch out for brick walls.

We begin DIEcember, a celebration of the horror movies made by New World Pictures, with a movie that nearly made it into New World's history: 1992's WARLOCK: THE ARMAGEDDON directed by the late Anthony Hickox (HELLRAISER III: HELL ON EARTH) and starring the late Julian Sands in his second go-around as Satan's son. This time around, the Warlock has some new adversaries in the form of two teenage Druid warriors who train to face the evil Warlock by making baseballs fly through the air and befriending squirrels. Along the way, we discuss THE GREAT OUTDOORS, growing up on a film set, and the delicious menu at Black Angus!  Get ready for DIEcember, because this is only the beginning!   

We push the limits of what we mean by "nearly New World" with this bonus episode where we talk about 1986 classic, Night of the Creeps starring Jason Lively (Blake's brother), Jill Whitlow (not related to the Lively family) and Tom Atkins in the role he was destined to play.

Oh my, you say, oh yessssssss, we say! So settle in, chill out, and don't forget to milk Movini before watching this thrilling, bizarre, choose your own adventure  directed by Andrew Meyer, a dark film that spends the majority of its time focusing on the night and very little time at a zoo...ooopsie STILL talking about Night Zoo! You'll have to listen and decide for yourself what happened to Dirk, Duff, Joanna and what it truly means to spend a night with the Cobra Woman!

We continue #NIGHTvember with 1987's Night Zoo.  With a title like Night Zoo, you'd expect a fun, family comedy.  Maybe something along the lines of Night at the Museum.  Spoiler alert!  You would be wrong.  Dead Wrong.  

Night Zoo, directed by Jean-Claude Lauzon, is a dark film that spends the majority of its time focusing on the night and very little time at a zoo.  Night Zoo follows Marcel's release from prison as he tries to rebuild his estranged relationship with his father and hide $200,000 from some corrupt cops.  He also tries to get back together with his girlfriend but that's only a small part of the movie which is surprising given her appearance on the movie poster.  There's also some cocaine hidden in a thermos, a prized parakeet, and someone seems to always have lube in their pocket. 

We talk about the apartment rental market in Quebec during the 1980's, Marc's 
follicly challenged head, and the retirement benefits provided by Peepshow providers.  It's just what you'd expect from a Night Zoo.

Welcome to #NIGHTvember where we will spend the month talking about movies with "night" in the title! Kicking off our month of night is the wacky, chaotic comedy by director Jackie Kong, Night Patrol!  Join us on our pursuit of what works in this film, including special shout outs to Linda Blair, the Unknown Comic, and an Erica favorite, - showbiz agent character! We toss out our usual show structure and follow the trail of wherever the night (patrol) takes us! We promise no animals were harmed in the recording of this podcast.

We close out #VIDtober with our ranking of Italy's much beloved La Casa franchise.  A franchise that shares the podium with such greats as The Godfather 1-3 and Star Wars. 

If you're saying to yourself, "I've never seen a La Casa movie" you would be wrong.  If you've seen Evil Dead or Evil Dead 2, you've seen a La Casa movie.  If you've seen some, but not all, of the House movies, you've seen a La Casa movie.  If you've seen The Witchery then good for you.  You've seen a La Casa movie.

We rank our least favorite to our favorite.  More importantly, Ryan betrays us by making a confounding ranking decision that has us all wondering if he's lost his mind.  

Our penultimate episode of VIDtober, our celebration of the movies released by New World Video, is also our 100th New World movie!  Appropriately, we're discussing Donald G. Jackson's I LIKE TO HURT PEOPLE, a documentary? Sports film? Slasher? Whatever it may be, it contains a lot of wrestling! Even PRINCESS BRIDE actor Andre the Giant wrestles in it! 

Joining us is returning guest Brian James O'Connell, a director, writer, and wrestling fan, who sorts out the whole world of 1970's and early 80's wrestling world for us, teaching us about "jobbers" and the 5 motivations for a wrestler (we even add one more)! Plus, we go into what this movie was originally going to be, and what we discovered was, well, A LOT. You won't believe your ears (nor should you, if they talk to you)!

As we continue #VIDtober and talk about the movies released by New World Video, there's one title we can't figure out why it wasn't released by New World Video and that's Lamberto's Bava's DEMONS 2!  Featuring perhaps the greatest soundtrack ever created for a film (at least, in our opinion) and yet somehow not a commentary on television, we discuss the return of Bava's orthodontically-challenged creatures and how difficult they are to defeat, especially when no one knows how to close a door or not trap themselves in the garage! Would you kill a demon or still get your reps in?  We ask all the tough questions, including whether Bava should have used his original idea for an ending and how they could've made DEMONS 3! 

We continue our journey through the hardest fought hashtag, #VIDtober, in New World Pictures Podcast history with a rare gem(?) - 1985's TERROR IN THE SWAMP or, as it's known in some circles, NUTRIAMAN:  THE COPASAW CREATURE.  

If you're from Louisiana or spent any time in a Southern swamp, you've got the advantage with this episode.  We are way over our skis with the dialogue but we found a new saying that will become a NWPPVIP staple, "we can't go off half cocktail".  Cocktail?  Not sure what that means but we love it.  

If you're not from Louisiana but you like aeronautics, you'll love this movie.  There are bi-planes, float-planes, helicopters and even airboats.  

Maybe you're into MOONSHINERS on Discovery Channel.  This movie has moonshine too!  And, they know how to drink it right - out of Mason jars.   

Most importantly, if you're into Nutria, you might like this movie.  It doesn't have as many Nutria as you'd expect.  And while we're on the subject, does a Nutria sound like a person playing a Kazoo?

 Happy Labor Day indeed! We kick off #SEXtember by talking about 1974's CANDY STRIPE NURSES written and directed by Alan Holleb (SCHOOL SPIRIT).  In typical NWPP fashion, we start covering New World's NURSES series with the final one in the series, and dig deep into what it takes to be a private eye in Los Angeles, the power of a simple motion offense, and answer the most important question of all, how to pronounce "amphetamine."

To end out #AuGHOST, a celebration of the ghost films released by New World Pictures, we talk about a movie that started a franchise (albeit one New World only half participated In): HOUSE! The film about a haunted house taken over by a deceased owner's nephew with his own strange history brought director Steve Miner and producer Sean S. Cunningham into the New World fold, just as they had finished working on the first three FRIDAY THE 13TH films! Miner would quickly become a go-to director for New World, while Cunningham would shepherd the rest of the franchise, which we will rank in this episode!

Also we will discuss the incredible George Wendt, how to flirt your way into getting free babysitting, the wrong way to cook a microwave dinner, and Marc's fascination with toilet flushing! We've had a great time during this #AuGHOST, and HOUSE is the perfect way to close it out!  

Our #AuGHOST month continues with our most terrifying selection yet (that is, if you find local theater terrifying): 1986's SHADOW PLAY!  The directorial debut of writer/director Susan Shadburne, this features plenty of star power in the form of Dee Wallace Stone and Cloris Leachman, as it explores a playwright who loses her fiance to suicide (but, you know, not exactly) and takes 7 years to work through it by moving in with his mother and brother in the Pacific Northwest.

In this episode, Marc's explores his love of Henry Weinhardt's beer, Erica professes her desire to play agent to Wallace Stone's playwright, and Ryan falls in love with the small theatre troupe reading Wallace Stone's (confusing) words! Plus, we discuss the film's epic love scene! Could it be the best we've ever seen? Listen and find out!

We continue #AuGHOST with our most Nearly New World episode yet with 1985's SCHOOL SPIRIT! Roger Corman produces this ghostly comedy, directed by Allan Holeb (CANDY STRIPE NURSES), about a college student whose attempts to hook up with fellow student is interrupted by a deathly car crash! We discuss why New World passed on this movie yet still released 18 AGAIN! and others, the movie's excellent soundtrack, it's physical comedy, and, of course, Hog Day!  If ghosts scare you, no reason top be frightened of this one, the ghosts can become people and then ghosts again! Wait, is that even scarier? You be the judge! 

We kick off #AUGHOST with 1987's PRISON.  Directed by Renny Harlin (CLIFFHANGER, THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT) and written HALLOWEEN producer Irwin Yablans, PRISON is a curious partnership between New World Pictures and Empire Pictures.  And who's the beneficiary of this partnership?  We all are.  

Don't let the title fool you.  The Prison in PRISON offers loose rules, plenty of yard time, and a ghost that's out for revenge.  In this prison, you're locked up with an ensemble cast including Chelsea Field (or Mrs. Bakula according to Marc) from BIRDS 2: LANDS END, Lane Smith (SON-IN-LAW) and some guy named Viggo Mortenson.  He didn't do a whole lot outside of this movie but that doesn't stop Erica from creating a new fan club called the Viggans (pronounced, "vegans").  The meals are exceptional and they have open mic night.   

PRISON feels like it could have been an entry into the Hellraiser franchise or a Pauly Shore vehicle while also carving it's own path.  Spoiler, we spend a lot of time talking about Pauly Shore.  

Joining us to finish off #SciFiJuly is our friend, comedian and actor Tommy Bechtold (The Middle, New Rockstars YouTube Channel), who almost watched another movie altogether but finally caught DEF-CON 4, writer/director Paul Donovan's post-apocalyptic tale of love, survival, and unseasoned steaks! We discuss post-nuclear hut-building, DEF-CON 4's iconic poster, the incredible amount of spices one needs to survive in space, the Genie's, and whether DEF-CON 4 influenced INTERSTELLAR!  Don't miss this laugh-filled deep dive into a movie you at least always thought about renting!

He hop all over this episode.  Marc talks about his favorite movies from the 2011'sis year including JUST GO WITH IT.  In fact, this episode spends an unusual amount of time talking about the Adam Sandler's 2011 hit.  Is HELL COMES TO FROGTOWN part of the JUST GO WITH IT UNIVERSE?  Maybe.  

Meanwhile, Erica provides us with many finger diagrams related to how frogs hop and the challenges Roddy Piper's character in the movie would have trying to have sex through an explosive chastity belt.  All of this will be lost on you, the listening, but, trust us, they were amazing and educational.  

As they say, "all gloomy things must come to an end".  We wave goodbye to JUNE GLOOM with a movie that isn't short on tears - Ingmar Bergman's CRIES AND WHISPERS.  

This movie which deals with the fractured relationship between three sisters as one of the sisters is dying of cancer is long on atmosphere and short on action.  It won an Academy Award for cinematography.  Some of us loved the slow, methodic pacing.  Others of us thought the movie was 4 hours long.  

CRIES AND WHISPERS also shows that people who tend to be dramatic tend to surround themselves with other dramatic people.  Often, this results in a perpetual "drama-off" where one party tries to "out drama" the other.  Found out your spouse has had an affair?  Respond by stabbing yourself in the gut with a sword.  Or was it a letter opener?  We'll never know.  Regardless, DRAMA.  

As an added bonus, we frequently say that all roads lead to John Carpenter's THE THING.  CRIES AND WHISPERS is no exception.

JUNE GLOOM marches on and takes a dramatic (yet satisfying) turn as we discuss SAINT JACK, the film that saw director Peter Bogdanovich's return to Roger Corman filmmaking!  And joining us for this episode is the hilarious and insightful Ben Slater, who literally wrote the book on SAINT JACK with Kinda Hot: The Making of Saint Jack in Singapore! 

We ask Ben all the necessary insightful questions, like how was Cybill Shepherd involved in the film? How close was Orson Welles to directing it? Written by Jack Sholder (GENERATION X, THE HIDDEN), WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN? explores the challenging topic of child abduction in a small town where the police are useless, the realtors are heartless but the baklava at Nico's is to die for.  
We attempt to write our own LETTERBOXD description for the movie each with wildly different results, we do an unusually deep dive into children's love of clam chowder and the coagulative properties of whole milk.  There's a lot to explore.  

JUNE GLOOM, our tribute to the dramas or "saddies" released by New World Pictures, starts out with a bang with the 1984 New Zealand import HEART OF THE STAG!  And boy, is it the gloomiest! It's the reason for the season!  VAMPril continues with the film that inspired it all: 1986's VAMP! And who better to discuss this vampire comedy than our guest, Brian James O'Connell, the director of the vampire comedy BLOODSUCKING BASTARDS starring Pedro Pascal! We discuss the difficulty of making horror comedies, the correct age to play spin the bottle, and the incredible Grace Jones! We are kicking off #vampril with 1989’s TEEN VAMP.  No, this isn't a sequel to 1986's VAMP.  Instead, TEEN VAMP is a coming-of-age story set in a very 1980’s looking 1950’s about a nerdy teenager who hires a prostitute that looks like Patricia Morrison from The Sisters of Mercy and turns out to be a vampire.  Once bitten, he becomes the coolest kid in school and a complete asshole. He also becomes a vampire, but that should be obvious.  

TEEN VAMP has everything you want from a vampire movie while taking it's own spin on traditional vampire lore.  Daylight is no problem for these vampires.  They are also surprisingly respectful of parent curfews. And if that isn't enough, TEEN VAMP gives throws in the ghosts of dead children, random teleportation, and a surprising amount of man buns.  

For Roger Corman's 97th birthday, we again chose two Corman movies at random to see if we select the same film.  Will we all chose the same one? Or will that never happen? Either way, it's going to be a celebration of Corman's epic career.  

We couldn't think of a better way to wrap up #prisonmarch than an interview with the Writer and Director of REFORM SCHOOL GIRLS, Tom DeSimone.  We dig into the making of REFORM SCHOOL GIRLS and the different script changes that shaped the film.  Tom talks about casting Wendy O. Williams, meeting Pat Ast in a NY nightclub and the casting of Sybil Danning as Sgt Sutter.  

We also talk about one of our Running Top 5 favorites, ANGEL 3: THE FINAL CHAPTER including how Donna Wilkes almost came back to the franchise.  Tom talks about almost directing THE BLOB and working with an aspiring Frank Darabont.

These three friends share a long and storied history which made this less of an interview and more of a conversation.  They talk about how they got their start in filmmaking including the making of 1982's THE DORM THAT DRIPPED BLOOD and 1983's THE POWER.  They tell stories about the making of TORMENT including the precarious sleeping conditions while shooting at Samson's parents' house.  We also learn about the big investment opportunities that were created by NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4: THE DREAM MASTER.  Who knew?

We begin #Disastruary with 1979's UP FROM THE DEPTHS, directed by long-time Roger Corman collaborator Charles B. Griffith (GRAND THEFT AUTO, SMOKEY BITES THE DUST, THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS) which follows a Hawaiian resort under attack from a giant... shark? Monster? Fish? Well, anyway, something aquatic attacks them after being released by an underwater earthquake. We've wanted to talk with Writer, Director, and Producer Patrick Read Johnson for some time now and it was worth the wait.  Patrick shares some amazing stories about getting his start in the film business and how he swapped sci-fi stories with George Lucas on the set of BATMAN RETURNS.  

He also talks about working on wearing multiple hats while working on DEAD HEAT.  It isn't often that you are able to do special effects, fill the role of  Assistant Director, and be the Music Composer all on the same movie.  We talk with Patrick about his work on WARLOCK and how that production differed from DEAD HEAT.  

Finally, we talk about Patrick's latest film: 5-25-77.  It's a true labor of love that was years in the making.  It has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.  You can watch it on Showtime but you should really go buy the blu ray.  Physical media is far more gratifying.  

We kick off #Deathcember, our celebration of New World movies with the word "death" in them, with ANGEL OF DEATH, from both director Jess Franco and Andrea Bianchi! We kick off our new Monday release schedule with an interview with Writer, Director, and Actor, Charles Dennis.  As many of you #NWPPVIPs know, we love 1983's COVERGIRL and were thrilled to have a chance to talk with Charles about the movie. Did you know the director shot a separate film within the film?  We sure didn't.

Charles shares with us how he got his start in radio and the theater as a child.  He shares how he befriended Anthony Perkins.  He talks about his early films including 1974's THE THIRSTY DEAD (how was this not a New World Pictures movie?!), 1979's MIRROR MIRROR, and 1980's DOUBLE NEGATIVE.

 #Newoirvember continues with Part 2 of our 3-part conversation with producer and director Donald P. Borchers, who produced both ANGEL and CHILDREN OF THE CORN for New World Pictures and helped get the post-Corman era off to a good start. In this episode, we discuss Ken Russell's CRIMES OF PASSION, which Borchers produced and discuss how the film almost had a monkey wearing a diaper in it, the bargaining with the MPAA, and how Donald slipped the change of Anthony Perkins's character to a priest past the New World brass. #Corntober continues as we turn our attention to the curious world of viticulture with 1989's THE VINEYARD.  As it turns out, making the best wine in the world is hard.  It takes more than a great crop.  You need to have incredibly loyal staff, an associate's degree in magic, and the blood of aspiring twenty-something actors.  Who knew?  We sure didn't.  

James Hong (BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, KUNG FU PANDA) stars as Dr. Elson Po, a world-renowned winemaker with a bit of a checkered past and a troubled relationship with his mother.  When he isn't making wine, Dr. Po enjoys hosting costume parties, playing with voodoo dolls, and castrating anyone that tries to have sex with Mrs. Dr. Po.  He also has a pesky zombie problem on his property and an unruly gang chained up in the basement.  But before he can tackle these problems, he needs to find a way to satisfy a Mayan god so he will have eternal life.  Making wine is HARD.

 David Simkins is well known as a writer for both the big and small screen, writing ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING and working on shows like Adventures of Brisco County Jr. and Lois & Clark, but it was a surprise to us that he started his career working as a development executive at New World Pictures. In fact, Simkins was critical to the studio making 1984's CHILDREN OF THE CORN, so we had to interview him for #Corntober! Simkins takes us through his early years working on the high school sketch show Beyond Our Control, to working at New World Pictures, crushing on Linda Hamilton, and pitching ideas to the executives, one of which became a beloved Christmas classic (to some). Then we discuss  then working with Debra Hill, how Simkins invented "quiet quitting," what Coen Brothers movie New World had a chance to release but didn't, and Simkins's TV work, from Brisco County Jr. to the Sam Raimi show Spy Game to recent work on Powers and Wu Assassins.  Jump in, the children demand it! 

 #Corntober is here! And what better way to kick things off than 1977's DEADLY HARVEST, a Canadian eco-thriller about famine, human desperation, and our universal hatred of eggplants!  Clint Walker and Kim Cattrall lead this film about a society with a dwindling food supply due to climate change, yet plenty of gasoline and eggplants! (But does anyone eat eggplants?)  Only computers have the answers of how long we have, but at least it only takes two men to load a cow into a painted Hearst! Or does it? Some of you already know and some of you don't.  

It's another installment in our burgeoning Bonus Episode series, "Nearly New World".  This time, we're talking about 1988's THE BLOB. This movie checks a lot of boxes.  It has faceless eurocrats (Ryan's favorite).  It's a creature feature (Erica's favorite).  It highlights the challenges of a low tax basis on a small town's infrastructure (Marc's favorite).  We introduce some new segments including "things we learned" and "things we appreciated". The directorial debut from Charles Dennis (COVERGIRL) was an HBO staple and was nominated for 4 Genie Awards, and we marvel at it's ability to confuse as much as entertain! Way back in our HEATHERS episode, Marc mentioned his disdain for 1992's BATMAN RETURNS, only for it come back to haunt him when we interviewed screenwriter Daniel Waters. We felt the next step was to try to convince Marc to give BATMAN RETURNS another chance, first by interviewing Marc's 1992 self and then catching up with him in the present day after a re-watch of Tim Burton's second and final Batman movie. Were Erica and Ryan successful?  You'll have to listen to find out!

As we are want to do here at the NWPP, we start at the end of the franchise and work our way back, which is why we are dipping our toes into the ANGEL franchise first with ANGEL III: THE FINAL CHAPTER! For part III, writer/director Tom DeSimone (REFORM SCHOOL GIRLS) steps in to guide Molly/Angel in her next adventure which goes all the way to New York City and straight back to Hollywood so Angel (Mitzi Kapture) can save her sister from a drug smuggling, human trafficker (Maud Adams). In this episode, we discuss our various forms of face blindness, how Richard Roundtree smartly outsourced police work, and attempt to rename Spanky's Ice Cream company! Plus, Erica learns a little about Steely Dan! 

We are talking with Actor, Director, Producer Dimitri Logothetis about his directorial debut, PRETTY SMART. Dimitri shares with us the origin of getting the film made including Tony Randal's ulterior motive for getting New World Pictures involved.  More importantly, we learn that playing with an Ouiji board in a Greek hotel while high can drive you to make some pretty rash decisions. 

We also learn about Dimitris's pitch to direct HARDBODIES 2.  He talks about the making of SLAUGHTERHOUSE ROCK and shares a story about the ghosts that may or may not live in solitary confinement.  We also talk with Dimitri about his latest production, JIU JITSU featuring Nicolas Cage.

When a movie title combines two words together like "death" and "stalker" it's imperative to determine the proper pronunciation.  Is it "Deaths Talker"?  Or, is it "Death Stalker?".  Also, how does one acquire the name "Deathstalker"?  

We dare to ask these tough questions while talking about boners more here than in any other NWPP episode.  Ryan does a deep, deep dive into the history of Conan the Barbarian. Erica adds a vaudevillian flare to the episode with her mouth trumpet.  Marc attempts but fails to dissect the intricacies of a sex scene between a male that has been temporarily turned into a female. And we introduce a brand new section titled "donger insights".

For our 100th episode, we explore an area of New World Pictures history that we've never discussed: when other companies had to release their movies because they were broke! Such is the case with 1989's WARLOCK, despite the presence of director Steve Miner, who had made some of New World's biggest hits, and Executive producer Arnold Kopelson, who had just won an Academy Award! Joining us in the discussion is Lindsay Wilkins from the Schlock and Awe podcast so we could properly discuss Mary Woronov's greatness, Julian Sands' charming but limited powers, and Richard E. Grant's accent!  Plus, we crunch the numbers on being a Mennonite, reveal what it's like partying in your 40's, and discuss the power of putting pennies in your mouth!  

After the resounding success of our first Convince Me episode (where Ryan and Erica failed to convince Marc that The Silence of the Lambs is a good movie because that movie blows) we decided to do another episode.  This time, Erica selects 1982's Blade Runner. 

Erica has always been vocal about her detest of Blade Runner and she doesn't hold back.  In the process, we determine that Tyrell is a Scientologist and Erica tells a story about wearing an eye patch as a child.  It's an emotional journey that ends with an important question that Erica must answer - would she rather watch Blade Runner or Steaming?

 Doug from the Good Times Great Movies Podcast joins us to talk about 1981's THE PIT!  That's a pretty old film, considering we're just a bunch of super youngs that are hip as hell, but we were nevertheless charmed by this movie, even if it's about a creepy kid who's only friends are his teddy bear and these small creatures who live at the bottom of a pit he found in the woods!  We dig into all the important subjects, like, how old is the Dad? Does anyone in this town know how to properly root during a football game? And did people change their clothes before dinner in the 1970's? Listen to learn the answers as well as the parameters of the Canadian tax shelter movies! It'll be fun and cool!  Trust us, we're hella young!  

Our new Bonus Episode series Nearly New World continues with the sequel to the 1984 New World classic, which might have been released by New World for reasons we'll explain in the episode.  First we'll also discuss a few things we've been watching lately, including ALIEN PRIVATE EYE, ANACONDA, and Tootsie the Musical! Then it's on to THE FINAL SACRIFICE, where we discuss the new powers of He Who Walks Behind the Rows, including corn vision, voodoo magic, and replacing your jelly beans with his! Will shitty dad John and the son he is being forced to spend time with be able to stop Zebedaikah in time?  Listen to find out!   

With a title like SMOKEY BITES THE DUST, you would think the elevator pitch for the movie would go something like, "The sheriff of a small town will stop at nothing to catch a high school rebel that kidnaps his daughter" Or, "When his car is stolen, Dick Miller sets off to catch the perpetrator by helicopter in a game of air-to-ground cat and mouse."  Or, "Time is running out as a local moonshiner looks to strike it rich by selling his prized recipe before law enforcement catches up with him"  Or, "A pre-teen girl wrestles with the challenges of growing up while living in a small town full of corruption and danger"

Fortunately, if you took all those elevator pitches and replaced "Or" with "And", you would have most of the plot for Smokey Bites the Dust.  Buckle up.

Did you know one of us hates SILENCE OF THE LAMBS? It's true! And that's either surprising or completely normal, depending on your perspective.  That lead to us creating a new Bonus Episode series called "Convince Me!" Listen as some of us do our best to convince the other that Jonathan Demme's SILENCE OF THE LAMBS isn't a piece of shit.  It's harder than you might think! Whether you agree or disagree, remember to fill our social media timelines with your opinions! You might as well, you're already on your phone!

58 movies into our journey, and some of us are starting to question whether watching EVERY New World Pictures movie was a good idea. However, the Board won't budge so we continue with 1985's TRANSYLVANIA 6-500 starring the ever-delightful Jeff Goldblum and Ed Begley, Jr. leading an incredible cast of comedic actors! (Also, Michael Richards.)  We dive into this wacky film, and, along the way, we learn an inordinate amount about Marc's 10th grade Drama class, Erica unveils her Carol Kane impression and then gets outraged at a cast member's assessment of the film, and we all learn about Blue Nun wine. It's good, eh?   

L-l-l-late b-b-b-bonus episode.  Sorry for the delay but we hope it will be worth it as we talk about STEEL AND LACE, a movie that could have and should have been made by New World Pictures but wasn't.  We get into the most important parts of this sci-fi thriller including the intricacies of property management and whether Gaily Morton, the film's lead, is a robot, droid, or cyborg.  We also debate whether Gilly is, in fact, the lead.

In addition to STEEL AND LACE, we review 2022's TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE where the vote is split down the middle.  Ryan and Erica talk about AMBULANCE and Marc shares a little about SLAUGHTERHOUSE ROCK.  Somewhere in the middle, Erica and Marc lose trust in Ryan and Erica reveals her hidden talent for stenography.  This episode covers a lot of ground.  Probably too much.  Hope you enjoy.

Dirk Marshall (VH US Podcast) joins us to discuss the 1986 Canadian film THE GREAT LAND OF SMALL! We do our best to make sense of this weird and underseen kindertrauma, one that has disturbed Dirk since seeing it as a child in his father's video store! We share our top five favorite horror franchises with mixed results.  Some of our picks garner universal praise.  Other picks are relegated to endless chastising.  It's a real mixed bag that includes a surprise or two.  Well, at least they were surprises to us.  

To start off the spooky season, we bring you 1988's GHOST TOWN!  Directed by Richard McCarthy (well, Richard Governor as far as the DGA is concerned), this film stars Catherine Hickland as a woman who abandons her wedding and is kidnapped by old-timey ghosts and Franc Luz as a semi-law-abiding deputy who tries to save her.  And trust us, you've never met ghosts like this!  Seriously, they often don't make sense, but that didn't stop us from enjoying this horror western, which also taught us an unique German curse word, what to do after your car spontaneously combusts, and that perhaps this whole film was an Old West version of THE GAME!

One of the only New Word Pictures movies to not make money.  It's easy to see why - it's about cockfighting.  When you make a movie about cockfighting, you have to show a lot of cocks fighting which makes it a hard watch. On a positive note, we learned Eric used to love The Squirrel Nut Zippers and Ryan knows everything there is to know about St Elsewhere.  So, all is not lost.  Enjoy.
