News doesn't take a break, so this week, Chris Niccolls and Jordan Drake join me from the comfort of their hotel room on the coast of Vancouver Island. The biggest story? Canon's RF mount is finally open to third-party developers, but there is a catch. That said, there might be a good reason for Canon to make this choice, as its sales aren't doing great.
The trio also discusses Sigma and Nikon and Canon's response to the situation at RED Cinema. Finally, it can be hard for solo creators to work with larger teams when they're given the opportunity, so the three present their tips for making the most of those types of opportunities.

This week, Chris and Jordan published not only their first documentary for PetaPixel but also the first documentary of this style and length in their YouTube careers. "The World’s First U2 Spy Plane Photo Shoot at the Edge of Space" is the story of how photographer Blair Bunting spent the better part of a year planning and training to take a Cold War-era spy plane up to the edge of space to perform a photo shoot that had never previously been attempted, and likely will never happen again.

Sony has made it a company policy to discontinue camera bodies and lenses as infrequently as possible, which has the advantage of giving buyers more choice when it comes to determining how to spend their money. Continuing to sell the Sony a7 II, for example, even though there a7 IV is the most recent addition to that section of the line allows a photographer to decide to spend less on a camera if they don't think they need as many features.
But on the flip side, it results in a camera line that has an amorphous beginning and end. Seeing so many choices ends up becoming more of a detriment than a benefit. In this week's PetaPixel Podcast, Chris, Jordan, and Jaron talk about this problem and do their best to point out how difficult it has become to recommend a specific camera for a specific use case given the bloated nature of Sony's camera line.

This week, Chris, Jordan, and Jaron tackle the topic of lens breathing and whether or not it is "blown" out of proportion (pun intended). You see, Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki spoke with PetaPixel contributor and former Imaging Resource publisher David Etchells, and Yamaki says that YouTube reviewers might be putting too much emphasis on lens breathing, which could take away development time and emphasis from other important lens manufacturing endeavors. Chris and Jordan obviously have an opinion on that, and they weigh in.

Whether it be for sentimental reasons, because it's so practical, or because it has become a valuable collector's item, most photographers have at least one piece of gear they'll never get rid of. Since it began its full scientific operations at the second Lagrange point (L2), about one million miles from Earth last year, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has enchanted people around the world. Webb’s photos have inspired many people to learn more about space and look at the night sky with unprecedented wonder and curiosity.
Webb’s stunning images are not beamed to Earth from the $10 billion space telescope in full color. In fact, Webb’s detectors capture monochromatic photos that are exceedingly dark.
Thanks to expert image processors Joe DePasquale and Alyssa Pagan at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, Maryland, the dark gray raw images come to life in unbelievable ways.
