The Poker Coaching Podcast with Jonathan Little
Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk steps away from the half pipe to play in a charity poker shootout tournament at the PokerGO studio in Las Vegas. In the heads-up part of the show, he faces poker professional Maria Ho. On an extremely wet board, Hawk has just seven-high and faces an overbet from Ho. How the adrenaline junkie responds is truly mind blowing & is not to be missed!
When you make a large bet or overbet on the river, you should be very polarized. This means that you should either have a really strong nutted hand or you have absolutely nothing. It helps keep you balanced when playing against Game Theory Optimal (GTO) studied opponents, meaning you will have a mixture of bluffs and value in your overbetting range.
Maria Ho is a professional poker player from America. She has over $5,400,000 in live tournament earnings, putting her in the top 350 on the all-time money list. She is well known for commentating on a wide variety of poker shows including the US Poker Open, Super High Roller Bowl, Poker Masters and the World Series of Poker.
Tony Hawk is a retired American professional skateboarder, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He is widely considered as one of the most influential skateboarders in history. Tony Hawk gained fame for his groundbreaking skills and achievements in vert skateboarding, including being the first person to land a “900” (a trick involving two and a half spins in mid-air). Apart from his success in the sport, Tony Hawk has built a successful business empire with his own skateboarding company and video game series. He remains an iconic figure in the skateboarding community and has made significant contributions to the popularization of the sport worldwide. Hawk has been involved in charity poker events and has played in tournaments alongside other celebrities. He only has one live tournament cash to date, according to HendonMob, which was for $5,000. It came in 2004 at the Celebrity Poker Showdown Season 4 in Las Vegas.
The 2016 Poker Central Shootout had given $85,000 to charity after hosting two phases of action at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. The first part of the tournament pitted celebrities and a qualifier from Zynga poker against each other in a six-handed Sit & Go to advance to a heads-up match between the professional poker players. The top three in the first part split $45,000, and the winners of the heads-up matches received $10,000 for a charity of their choice.
In the heads-up matches, Tyle Posey took on Phil Hellmuth ‘The Poker Brat’; Tony Hawk played Maria Ho and Daniel Negreanu ‘DNegs’ or ‘KidPoker’ faced Chuck Liddell.

Preflop:
Tony Hawk calls from the button with 75 of diamonds, which is also the small blind in heads-up poker. Maria Ho checks from the big blind with 63 of spades and they both head to the flop.
Flop – Ac Tc 4c:
The ace-high monotone flop misses both players. Ho checks with just a backdoor straight draw. Hawk checks back with his own backdoor straight draw.
Turn – 2c:
A fourth club arrives on the turn. Both players have improved to a gutshot straight draw. Ho bets 1,000 and Hawk calls with his suited one-gapper and gutshot straight draw to the wheel.
River – 8h:
The 8 of hearts on the river misses both players’ draws. They are each left with virtually nothing. Ho overbets for 4,000 with just six-high. Surely this is going to work since Hawk only has seven-high on such a wet and connected board, right? What the skateboarding G.O.A.T. does next has shocked even the top poker professionals! Stay tuned to find out what it is.
