The Songwriter Diaries

Andy Sydow

33 min • 15 december 2020

Americana, rock, alternative country singer-songwriter Andy Sydow is a jack-of-all-trades. Throughout the course of a show he's known to croon an audience with acoustic guitar ballads, play a few shredding slide guitar solos and even sit down at the keys to show off his surprising boogie-woogie piano chops.

Sydow draws comparisons to voices like Paul Simon and Jackson Browne, mixed with a roots rock vibe reminiscent of Tom Petty or Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats. He is a serious songwriter, though occasionally uses satire to get his point across.

Sydow's newest release, Wicked Dreams is a three song EP, lyrically centered around the idea of fulfillment in all aspects of life. Musically it features a horn section and extended guitar solos. The lead off track, "Still My Girl" tells a relatable story of finding a significant others flaws and imperfections to be what you love most about them. The title track is the story of a troubadour who travels around working odd jobs and various 9-5's in an attempt to follow societal norms. "Feel Like Gold" is a polite jab at today's society. "If we stick to hate, then all that's left to do is wait and see."

Andy says about his new EP, "Perhaps for the first time in my life I do feel a sense of fulfillment. Life is good. I've met the right lady, I go for long runs in the morning, I'm constantly inspired by my job. I enjoy myself. What gives me wicked dreams is not achieving my career goals. When I was 17, I promised myself that by 30 I'd be headlining 500 cap rooms and playing stages like the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival and eTown. Perhaps my goals were ignorant statements at the time, but I'm 28 (quickly approaching 29) and I'm nowhere near where I want to be. Yes, I'm thankful for what I have! Yes, I'm happy! But there's a lot of work to do. I'm far from satisfied."

Andy has had the opportunity to open up for artists such as: Chase Rice, Koe Wetzel, Dick Dale, Brett Dennen, Anders Osborne, Tab Benoit, Shane Smith & The Saints, Delbert McClinton, Samantha Fish, and Chuck Prophet. His 2018 release, Reasons for Departure, brought positive reviews from press outlets including Pens Eye View and No Depression. It was also nominated for an LA Music Critic Award and two Colorado Playlist Best of Awards.

When Andy isn’t touring the US and Canada, he spends his time talking to other creatives and professionals in the music industry on his podcast, Middle Class Rock Star.
