When I wove my first basket, I literally went “by the book.” I used the same materials, the same weaving technique, and came out with the same basket as a result.  Since it was my first experience with weaving, that feeling that I’d done it properly was key to me creating my next basket, and my next.  And I’ve never stopped 😊

When we begin learning something new - whether it’s working in a new medium, trying a new technique, or wading into new subject matter - most of us start by emulating existing art or artists.  Not only is this totally normal - it’s a vital part of the learning process.

But replication isn’t about copying another artist.  It’s about honing your own sense of technique, aesthetic, and what is beautiful.  We learn through doing, and by emulating the work of others, we actually experience what it takes to create that shadow, throw that vessel on the wheel, or write that next meaningful line..

Emulation and replication are important legs of every artist’s creative journey - but they’re not the destination.
