The Zelda Cast

This week, we're putting a bow (for now!) on our Echoes of Wisdom announcement coverage as we answer some of Zelda Dungeon's Daily Debates regarding the new game, and sprinkle a few about Zelda in general for good measure too! On the docket this time: will Link and Zelda speak in game? Will Echoes of Wisdom lean more open world or have a more linear progression? Should we expect this game to be in the Downfall timeline? Is Zelda going to abandon the Triforce going forward? How could Nintendo improve its online experience? What's the most celebratory moment in the series? All this, and so much much more!

It's a special WEDNESDAY edition of the Zelda Cast, and for good reason: for the first time in almost 40 years, we now have a Zelda game where you play as Princess Zelda! The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom was announced in Tuesday's Nintendo Direct, a brand new Zelda game starring the titular character and a mysterious fairy named Tri who need to save Link and Hyrule! We get together and discuss our reactions to the trailer, the fact that we finally get to play as Zelda, what we think of the echo system, how fantastic the toy art style looks, our appreciation for Grezzo, and how stoked we are that it's 99 days and counting away! From there, we flip over and talk Four Swords coming to NSO finally with online play!

We're also talking about everything else shown off in the Nintendo Direct, from Perfect Dark to Mario & Luigi to Donkey Kong Country Returns to, of course, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (if you want to hear Andy and the Omega guys' reaction to that trailer, check out their episode here!)

We have a really fun episode of the show for you this week! We asked for your Zelda-themed "would you rather" questions, and you guys delivered so much that we had to split the episode into two parts! A couple of the questions we had fun with include: would you rather get a brand new Zelda right away and wait for the Switch 2 for ten years, or vice versa? Would you rather play Tri Force Heroes solo or 100% Hyrule Warriors? Would we rather all future Zelda games are open world, or traditional 3D titles? Would we have rather had a more fleshed out Sky or more fleshed out Depths in Tears o the Kingdom? All this, plus a ton more!

It's time to kick it old school with another entry into our Definitive Ranking series, this time, examining the game that started it all: The Legend of Zelda! We’re going through ten critical categories that make up the ingredients to a Zelda game – world, story, pacing, art style, dungeons, bosses/enemies, items, gameplay, extras, and music – and assigning them each a score to see how the original game stacks up against all of the legendary entries that came after it! Recently, our Zelda Dungeon Writing Staff released a feature that collected the various writers' SPICIEST Zelda hot takes, and just like we did on the podcast a few months ago, we're now reacting to each take and assigning it a SPICE meter. On the table: is the downfall timeline the only logical conclusion for the timeline to go following the events of Ocarina of Time? In a followup to last weeks episode ranking all of the amazing bosses of Twilight Princess, we thought we would keep the good times rolling by judging all of the different mini-bosses of Link's Twilight Realm adventure! We're kicking it old school this week, as we're dialing it back to 2006 to talk about Twilight Princess, and specifically, the bosses! We're conducting a good ol' fashioned boss ranking this week, and no Zelda game has a stronger selection of baddies than Link's adventure through the Twilight Realm! From the fun-incarnate race against Stallord and the emotional confrontation with Blizzeta all the way to the epic sky battle versus Argorok to the amazing final confrontation again the Dark Lord Ganondorf, we're going through each fight to determine which one comes out on top as the absolute best! As a bonus - we're going to be covering the similarly-awesome mini-bosses in a future ep too!

The future of the smaller, quainter 2D Zelda games seems to be in question now that there's no dedicated handheld-only console, but never fear! We're keeping the hope alive by detailing things we would want to see from a new top-down 2D adventure! Everything is on the table as we look at things that games like A Link Between Worlds, Tunic, and Blossom Tales did well to get an idea of what we want. A new art style? Must have! An original setting outside of Hyrule? Yes please! Improved combat that utilizes lock-on and quasi-3D targeting? Where do we sign!? A cap on the number of dungeons in the game? That's debatable, but hear us out! We have a ton of different ideas on what the next 2D game could look like, so come and hang out with us and chime in with your own ideas!

What's up everybody? It seems that the announcement of the Switch 2 is imminent, so this week, the gang get together to talk about what we'd like to see from Nintendo's next console! Things like an upgraded dock, "transformer" controllers, official battery packs, revamped eShop, and Discord support are all discussed, PLUS we predict some of the games we envision the Switch 2 having in it's first year on the shelf (spoiler: unfortunately, neither of us are sure a new Zelda game is gonna be on that list)! While any news or announcements on the upcoming live-action Legend of Zelda movie may not be forthcoming for a while, that didn't our Zelda Dungeon writing staff from putting together an amazing feature called Dreams for the Silver Screen: Our Zelda Movie Pitches where, as the title suggests, they laid out their best ideas and scenarios for the upcoming flick, so this week, we're reacting and analyzing all the great thoughts found in the article! We debate things like how much, if at all, should the Zelda flick stick to official game lore, if we would be interested in seeing Link's parents, if Zelda and Link should have a romantic, platonic, or something in between kind of relationship, and why comparing this movie to Lords of the Rings or a Studio Ghibli film will be setting oneself up for disappointment.

Way back when, we pitched a (not to pat ourselves on the back, but a GREAT SOUNDING) cyberpunk Zelda game that would blend the traditions that we love in the series with some features and themes often associated in the cyberpunk genre. After three long year, we're BACK to give our ideas to TWO MORE cyberpunk Zelda titles! We're joined by Zelda Cast producer Adrielle Munger as she gives her vision for The Legend of Zelda: The Silent Sisters, a narrative focused survival based Zelda game with futuristic dungeons and a Princess Zelda you've never seen before, while Andy imagines a cyberpunk RPG that reimagines Link and company as programs defending Hyframe against portals to the dark web, a code-altering gang called the Randomizers, and two competing virus threats that will look familiar to anyone who watch the classic Canadian show ReBoot in The Legend of Zelda: The Twin Viruses!

The year that was 2023 has come to a close, so the gang decide to reflect back on the year that! It's the most wonderful time of the year! No, not Christmas - Zelda Dungeon's Best Zelda Ever list is out, and as always, we're breaking it down game by game, entry by entry to see what we agreed with, disagreed with, were shocked by, and what pleasantly surprised us! The biggest questions this year were what kind of impact Tears of the Kingdom would have on the list, and if it could possibly dethrone Ocarina of Time as the list's champion after a dominant five year stretch! Plus, how does Breath of the Wild fare now that its sequel is out and has made it arguably obsolete? Plus, Andy reflects on his time as Editor-in-Chief, putting together the first couple BZE lists and how the standings have evolved over the years! Way back when the sad news that Tears of the Kingdom would not be getting any DLC, we had cooked up a few ideas for what we wanted to see in any future updates, and rather than letting those ideas go to waste, were today to talk about what we would have wanted to see if the decision to move on from Tears' Hyrule hadn't been made! After Nintendo dropped the tweet heard 'round the world ("This is Miyamoto") confirming that a live-action Legend of Zelda movie was due to enter pre-production soon, the Zelda community has been ablaze with all sorts of reactions, positive and negative, discussing what fans want from this adaptation. In case you were living under a rock this week, we had a Nintendo Direct a couple of days ago, and it was certainly... something. Nintendo delivered an understandably muted Direct this month, so we discuss and dissect everything shown and talk about what games, if any, we're looking forward to. More importantly, we use what we saw - or rather, didn't see! - to speculate on when we can expect an official Switch 2 reveal, complete with rough timelines including when we think the next 3D Zelda is coming out! After a week off discussing The Wind Waker, the gang are back to continue their Tears of the Kingdom summer, and this time, they've brought backup! Hi friends. My name is Andy Spiteri and I’m the host of The Zelda Cast, the Omega Metroid Podcast, and Virtual Theater. As you can tell, I love podcasting!

I had started a Patreon exclusively for Omega Metroid, but I eventually decided that I wanted to morph that into something that was a little more… me, for lack of a better phrase. So here we are – the SPNet Patreon! SPNet is a name I made up to describe my Network of podcasts – The Zelda Cast, Omega Metroid Podcast, and Virtual Theater – and this Patreon has been restructured to double down on the things I do best – podcast!

You’ll have your choice of bonus shows, depending on what tiers you choose to sign up for! Each podcast has it’s own monthly bonus show: The Zelda Cast will have The Zelda Cast Top Ten’s, where we can have some fun and give out a classic ranking on different topics each month; Omega Metroid will continue with the Great Metroid Area Ranking, where we rank every area in the series; and Virtual Theater will debut The Spiteri's Review, a show where my wife and I will give some thoughts on movies or shows, old and new. We're back with week two of our Tears of the Kingdom initial impressions! This time, we're talking about our thoughts on the Surface and how it differs from Breath of the Wild in places like Hateno and Lurelin, how Lookout Landing is a great introductory town, what some of our old favorite characters are up to, and the extensive cave systems hidden throughout Hyrule. We then shift over to talk about the Depths and how cool they are, some of the things we've found, and how crazy it was Nintendo didn't promote them more in the build up to the game. Lastly, we talk about the Sky, how we typically get up there, the challenges of exploring them, and some of the minigames up there!

WOW! THAT'S what we've been waiting for! In case you've been living under a rock, Nintendo released the third and final trailer for Tears of the Kingdom and it was by far the most exciting trailer shown so far! We finally got a new look at some of the gameplay of Tears of the Kingdom this past week, and we have A LOT to say! Al has taken over the show, and while we continue to wait for more Zelda news, we thought it would be fun to talk about something a little different this week. Wow. Wowowow. THAT, my friends, was a Nintendo Direct for the ages. Despite Nintendo arguably holding back yet again on Tears of the Kingdom, there was no doubt that the trailer we saw for the game was by far the meatiest one yet. Add in the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance NSO news, with The Minish Cap and Link's Awakening DX being playable RIGHT NOW with the Oracles not far behind it, and there was more Zelda news in this 40 minutes than there has been in seemingly years! Add in Metroid Prime Remastered, Pikmin 4, and more games, and this might have been the greatest Nintendo Direct ever!

Despite nabbing the Most Anticipated Game award, Tears of the Kingdom was a no-show at this years Game Awards, continuing the bizarre, frustrating, and perplexing pre-release cycle the sequel to Breath of the Wild has been on since its reveal, capping off what may go down as the worst year for The Legend of Zelda in the modern era.
