It was one of the busiest nights of the year at The Barn restaurant in Braintree. The bonfire night two-for-£5 deal was going down well, attracting over 300 customers. 24-year-old manager David Patience was waiting for the band to wrap up their set. It was past two in the morning, and he was eager to get to bed. The Patience family home was nearby, less than 100 yards from the restaurant. When the intercom system between the buildings rang, David wondered if his father, who had left not long before, had forgotten something. Robert Patience’s voice was panicked. Following the end of World War II, many projects that had been put on hold were resumed. Trewidden Vean and Nanquitho, areas between Penzance and Land’s End in Cornwall, were flooded to create Drift Reservoir. The 65-acre reservoir provides drinking water for West Penwith, and, over the years, has become increasingly popular with bird watchers. In 2018, record temperatures and a heat wave caused the water level to drop by almost three metres. The remnants of the Lost Valley were partially uncovered, but three years later, something much more sinister was brought to the surface of Drift Reservoir….

The officer called out to identify himself, but there was no response from behind the closed door. He tried to open it but was met by resistance. After managing to wedge the bedroom door a few inches, PC Francis saw the body of an elderly man on the floor. Blood and brain matter were pooling around his head. As PC Francis radioed for support and the London Ambulance Service, he heard a voice say, “You’re too late. A man in his mid-sixties wearing a light-coloured casual jacket and dark trousers caught the couple’s attention. Concerningly, he was clenching a piece of wood in his hand. Stephen slammed the brakes and got out of the vehicle. He realised another man was lying horizontally on the pavement, being struck about the head repeatedly with the length of wood. Blood was pooling on the path surrounding the injured man. Stephen instinctively yelled out, telling the assailant to stop. The attacker wrapped the wood in a plastic bag and turned to walk away. As he left the scene, he hollered back to the man he had just attacked: “You’ll not fucking do that again”...

Something caught Thomas’ attention at the bottom of a set of stone stairs known to locals as the ABC steps. Twenty-six stone platforms jutted out from the steeply sloping hill towards the canal towpath, a stone for each letter of the alphabet. A young girl was curled up at the bottom of the stairs, her legs folded beneath her as if she were crying. Thomas wondered if she was upset or had fallen, but the reality was far worse...

Tony Wesson was looking forward to spending time with his fiancée, Suzanne. In February 1974, a two-and-a-half-year-old went missing. For four hours, dozens of police officers and relatives of the toddler searched the area. His older brother had been looking after him while they were out playing but came home not knowing where his sibling was. The youngster was eventually found, peacefully asleep in the long grass a short distance from his home. Dan Brockley was driving along Woodside Road, close to Woodsome Hall Golf Club in Huddersfield, when a woman stumbled out of the tree line and into the road. It was dark and quiet when the female suddenly appeared, shortly before midnight on Saturday, May 28, 2011. Dan instinctively slammed his foot against the brakes, bringing the car to a screeching halt. The woman scrambled to the passenger side door and pleaded with him to let her in. The television series ‘Midsomer Murders’ has been on-air since 1997. In a fictional rural setting, each episode of the British crime drama sees an individual harbour dark secrets as part of the ongoing whodunnit murder mystery. In a curious twist of life imitating art, the picturesque village of Furneux Pelham in Hertfordshire became an unwitting backdrop for a real-life murder mystery in 2004. An elderly man had been found dead on the front doorstep of his Grade II listed cottage. News outlets dispatched reporters to Furneux Pelham, and the media began to draw parallels between the murder and the fictional television series. As time passed and the crime went unsolved, life in Furneux Pelham slowly returned to normal. However, sometime later, a jailhouse confession would thrust the village back into the spotlight…

A couple living on a farm in Kempsey, Worcestershire, had been having issues with their septic tank for some time. Two maintenance companies had been employed to fix the problem, but frustratingly, it was still blocked. On July 12th, 2019, a third company sent out a worker to drain the septic tank on the 500-acre farm. While emptying the tank, the pipe suddenly became blocked. When the worker cleared the obstruction, he discovered a mass of human hair was causing the problem. Early on an autumn morning, the emergency services received a call that a teenager was unresponsive in Newtown, Wales. It was Saturday, October 10th, 2020. What the panicked woman on the other end of the line described was a far cry from the typical teenage weekend drinking sessions that ended with alcohol poisoning or injury. On the morning of May 15th, 1979, three boys were playing by the Wyken Basin when they noticed something floating in the water. Curious, they went to take a closer look. They approached the reeds on the water's edge, and the object came into focus. Saturday, April 18th, 1998. In the early hours of the morning, two police officers were dispatched to the scene of a disturbance at a car park near Dolphin Square and Oxford Street in Weston-Super-Mare. PC Clive Golding-Ellis and PC Robert Deville were expecting a standard weekend drunken brawl. They saw something much different and considerably more disturbing. A woman was lying on the ground; her skin blistered and distorted with extensive burns that covered her head and upper body. As the officers urgently called for an ambulance, they spoke to a man standing nearby, drinking from a can of lager. He was drunk and told the officers, "I tried to put her out. The flames kept going back again”…

In the early hours of July 14th, a resident of Highfield Road in Neston heard banging on his front door. On his doorstep, he saw a middle-aged woman in a state of distress. The homeowner didn’t know her well, but he knew she lived further down the street. The Victorian era was an interesting time of development — advancements in machinery and modern medicine must have seemed like a new world. That said, it was also a time of great social inequality and hardship. Art was used to start a dialogue on the social issues that plagued Britain, and the period gave rise to some of the most notable artists and writers in history. While many artists were seen as eccentric characters, it was well-known that eccentricity lends itself to a creative mind. The sun was starting to set on The Blackbird Leys estate at around 4:30 PM on December 10th, 1994. Henry Sheriff was decorating the back room at his home on Monks Close when he was interrupted by a loud bang, a noise that echoed throughout the nearby properties. Henry wondered if it was someone joyriding again or a car back-firing.
