Thirty & Up - Hadith 33 The one who makes claims must provide evidence

The Prophet ﷺ lays down a foundational principle of justice in this week's hadith: "if people were to be given everything that they claim, they would claim the lives and wealth of others; but, the onus of proof is upon the claimant, and the taking of the oath is on the one who denies."⁠ ⁠ The principle of innocence until proven guilty, and that the burden of proof is upon the claimant is something that we are familiar with in western democratic justice systems, but this principle was established first and foremost by the Prophet ﷺ over 1400 years ago.
