Jovibarba Globifera: The Hen and Chickens Succulent

N/A • 7 februari 2024

Jovibarba globifera, also commonly known as the Hen and Chickens, or simply Sempervivum, is a succulent species belonging to the Crassulaceae family. Its original Latin name translates to "ever green", it received its common name due to the plant's growth pattern, which resembles a hen surrounded by her chicks. This plant can be traced back to central European origin, specifically in Alpine regions where it grows in craggy, rocky terrains. They prefer mild climates and resiliently thrive in harsh conditions including steep slopes, infertile soil, and direct exposure to sunlight. Hen and Chickens are unique for their beautiful rosette shape, forming dense mats with clusters of fleshy leaves in a variety of shades, usually a lush, deep green hue, but can take on red or copper undertones when exposed to the sun. In the middle of this formation, a thick stem called an inflorescence emerges, adorned with clusters of star-shaped, pastel yellow flowers. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect about this plant is its propagation method, which intimately involves its death. Each rosette, or "mother" plant, sends out numerous offsets, or "chicks". Once the mother plant flowers, it dies and the chicks take over, creating new plants – a botanical representation of the cycle of life. With its aesthetic appeal and remarkable resilience, the Jovibarba globifera is a favorite among landscapers and garden enthusiasts alike.
