Monstera Deliciosa: The Swiss Cheese Plant

2 min • 2 april 2023

Monstera deliciosa, commonly known as the Swiss cheese plant, is a tropical species of flowering plant native to the tropical rainforests of Southern Mexico and Central America. Its Latin name, Monstera deliciosa, translates to "delicious monster," which refers to the tasty fruit it produces. The Swiss cheese moniker comes from the distinctive large, glossy leaves which develop natural holes and slits as they mature, resembling a slice of Swiss cheese. This popular houseplant can now be found all over the world, as it is sought after for its unique appearance and easy adaptability to indoor environments. It can grow up to 60 feet high in its natural habitat but usually remains much smaller when grown indoors. Monstera deliciosa is a climbing plant that uses aerial roots to attach itself to trees or structures for support. The leaves can grow quite large, up to 3 feet long and 2 feet wide, and they showcase the characteristic splits and holes that provide better light absorption for the plant in the dense rainforest understory. The fruit of Monstera deliciosa, called the "ceriman" or "monster fruit," looks like a cross between a pineapple and a corn cob. It must be allowed to ripen fully before consumption, as the unripe fruit contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation and discomfort when ingested. Aside from being an attractive houseplant, Monstera deliciosa is also highly efficient at purifying indoor air, making it a popular choice for improving the air quality in homes and offices. Research has shown that it can effectively remove pollutants such as formaldehyde, benzene, and xylene from the environment. This plant is also a symbol of good fortune and long life in Chinese culture, making it a popular gift for housewarmings and other occasions.
