John Storrs Hall - Nanotech Nuclear Power

We’re joined by John Storrs Hall a subject matter expert and key influencer in the field of molecular nanotechnology. He joins us to discuss a variety of visionary concepts for Nanotech nuclear technology in his latest book, “Where Is My Flying Car”, available on Amazon John's achievements include former roles as a computer systems architect at Rutgers University, the founder of the sci.nanotech Usenet newsgroup, founding chief scientist of Nanorex Inc., and former president of the Foresight Institute. Our focus areas start with fission energy: there are something like 4 billion tons of uranium dissolved in the Earth’s oceans, which works out to over 100 quadrillion watt-years of energy. That’s enough to supply the current American 10 kw level of power to 10 billion people for 10,000 years. There’s even more uranium in ocean rocks, so you’ve also talked about these levels of dissolved uranium being a homeostatic equilibrium, which means that if we extract it, those levels will bounce back to current levels over time. We're going to be exploring these concepts and how Nanotech can help facilitate them. The next challenge is the reactor. John is designs based on Freeman Dyson’s TRIGA reactor, which has a negative-coefficient of reactivity. The hotter the reactor gets, the less it supports the fission reaction. About 70 TRIGA’s have operated for over 60 years without a significant accident. We'll also be exploring the concepts of cold fusion, LENR, and lattice-confinement fusion, and how Peter Hagelstein's "Quantum Coherence" may enable this reaction to occur, and the Navy SPAWAR and NASA experiments that suggest CF effects are worth further investigation - and how nanotechnology may facilitate & enable future cold fusion energy. We'll conclude by touching on hot fusion - the "big iron" of the industry, and possible roles that nanotech may play in that area as well.
