”To L and Back” is a delightful recapping adventure through every single episode of the number one lesbian show you hate to love, “The L Word.” Hosted by Autostraddle.com’s Riese Bernard — one of the internet’s most storied L Word scholars, with writer and director Carly Usdin, this podcast comes chock full of trivia, jokes, special guests, controversial Jenny takes, fond memories and other ways in which we live and love.
The podcast To L And Back: An L Word Podcast is created by To L And Back. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).

If this season was all episodes featuring a big event, this sure is a fitting finale. This week, on the final episode of the season, Bette and Tina wed, and finally stroll off together, hand in hand, into the sunset and (presumably) their long-awaited happily ever after. So much of what happens at the wedding is delightful: Bette and Tina get locked in the walk-in fridge, Alice is responsible for booze and calling Tasha (to save the brides, of course), Sophie and Pippa share a beautiful flirtatious afternoon. G Flip and Chrishell arrive, and Roxy is back to play and Dani is on drugs! So it's also a big bummer that Tess, Micah and Maribel specifically end the season in truly dour places. From the low of a relapse storyline to the highs of every single second Tasha was onscreen, this feels a fitting send-off to the season we loved to discuss so much. We love you, we'll miss you, we hope you enjoyed the ride!

A strong breeze has blown into Los Angeles this week and with it, the return of Bette and Tina! Angie's moms are back to get her out of bed and performing at her creative writing class reading and discover the relationship that has her sulking unshowered in bed. Shane and Tess are fighting over the second bar, but in a new and more final way. Finley is helping Carrie recover from her (obnoxious, to us) heart attack. And of course, Alice's movie meltdown has gotten her cancelled again, with one of our season-long prayers answered (no spoilers) as a result!!

In case you're family drama-ed out after all of the winter holidays that just passed, The L Word Gen Q is here to provide a fresh supply! It's Thanksgiving at Dana's, and Finley's mom has arrived! Sadly, she did not bring a green bean casserole, just a bad attitude. All roads lead to Dana's in this episode, as it becomes the go-to location for Dani and Dre, who are spending the holiday together, Carrie and Misty, who are turkey trotting, and the entire Suarez family who are still mashing potatoes upon arrival.

In a world where there is a major social event every single weekend, it is now time for an album release party! Fletcher's album release party, to be exact, which Dani is throwing, Micah and Maribel are cruising (for sperm donors), and Sophie wreaks sapphic chaos upon! And if that's not enticing enough, there's also skinny dipping! Elsewhere, we're delighted by a Carrie-Finley messaround, and Alice attempts to revisit a different ex this week: Tom! Delightful side plots ensue.

Hold onto your hats because we have a musical episode! Not, sadly, a musical episode of this podcast, but this week The L Word finally graced us with the beauty of Rosanny Zayas voice, with the style of a 40s musical, and with an emotional gut punch of grief mixed with nostalgia mixed with TRUE LOVE. Before all that happens though: Alice is taking her staff (and Shane!) on a work retreat to do some ayahuasca and soul searching. Alice, Sophie and Shane experience hallucinations that drop them into three different musicals as they seek answers to their most pressing questions! Will Shane finally realize she's non-monogamous? Will Sophie figure out her sort of vague issue with Finley? Will Alice ever fall in love?! All this and more (namely, musical numbers!) await this week.

Well well well, we are halfway through the season, and things are getting heated! Not necessarily in a sexy way, but in more of a fighting and fire alarm and first kisses kind of way. Alice and Taylor are arguing in a movie theater, Shane and Tess are arguing on a balcony, and Sophie and Finley are only not arguing because the fire department is on their way! We're also getting a little heated on the pod this week! Not necessarily in an angry way, but (hopefully) in more of a sharing our thoughts about writing and representation kind of way. What better time than mid-way through the season?

Spooky scary skeletons, it's a Halloween episode! We've got thrills, chills, and parties galore. One of the more realistic things that's ever happened in The L Word universe is the endless list of Halloween options for our Gen Q friends. Alice and Taylor are getting cozy at home, in the time honored tradition of three-straight days of gay sex. Sophie, Finley and Dani hit Dana's for a costume party, while Shane is hitting on Ivy. And in search of more parenting advice from queer elders, Micah and Maribel meet none other than very special guest and original The L Word icon, Max, back from living his own happily ever after far, far away (spiritually, I mean, he's still in LA) from all of these messy weirdos, to grace us with his presence once more.

Winter has arrived in Los Angeles this week, bringing a chill in the air, some light rain, and something totally new: a Bette-Porter-free episode of The L Word! While Bette and Tina are presumably off in Toronto frolicking and kissing and looking at art, The Aloce Show hosts its 100th episode, and with it, a dating game to find Alice The One. All sorts of shenanigans take place on the set of the Aloce Show this week, from breakups to hook-ups and make-ups and makeovers! Also, that boy Angie kissed last week? Actually a grown man, and also her teacher. Yikes!

This week, of course, everyone is talking about Bette and Tina! Look, sometimes you have to get back together with your ex! While Bette and Tina are having their own season finale, we're also talking this week about Micah and Mari's potential baby (not as poorly as Finley though, we promise), Shane and Tess's metaphorical baby (the bar), and whether we generally feel insecure in our own romantic relationships (not all of us!).

Hello again! Did you miss us!? Most importantly, did you miss The L Word!?!? Then boy do we have a treat for you! After a quick one year time jump, the gang is back and we've got a big event: a fundraiser at Dana's. In other big events of the episode: Finley returns from rehab and sober living, Micah wants to marry Mari, and yes okay of COURSE we have the long awaited conclusion to Tina showing up at Bette's doorstep. Will these two crazy kids finally make it work? Let's find out together!

Folks, it has finally happened. The members of our OG L Word cast have finally awoken from their decade-long collective dream and remembered that they have a past! Shane shares her regret about Carmen with Angie, and still definitely wants to get with Alice's mom. Alice, already busy crying over her break-up with Nat, decides to make us all cry by talking about Dana Fairbanks. Our friend Bette is too busy looking at Pippa Pascal in awe to remember that she has definitely done more stuff worth remembering than just "cheated on Tina seventeen years ago." (Justice for Jodi.) Meanwhile, our Gen Q crew is off doing things that they will conveniently forget to mention when they are in the next reboot 10 years from now. Sophie and Finley are starting to spend more time together, and of course Dani and Micah have feelings and thoughts about that (though Micah's thoughts and feelings seem to be growing in Maribel's direction, tbh). Listen to us unpack it all on To L and Back, and we'll even tell you our first AIM screennames as a treat!

Amid the break-ups, the make-ups and the new pairings we're excited about, on this week's episode of To L and Back (Generation Q...edition...), we also discuss the nuance required for meaningful conversations about tokenism and identity on television! Other topics include some ideas for a Bachelor / L Word crossover, some jobs Finley might actually be good at, and Angie's baffling DNA test results. If none of those interest you, there’s always Tess and Shane getting up to some illegal things!

Well, well, well, if it isn't the consequences of our Gen Q friends' actions! We're back for another episode full of talking, laughing, loving, breathing, and heavy on the fighting, as everyone deals with the fall out from the wedding, Shane schemes a new way to become richer, and Alice finally meets her editor. Meanwhile we discuss whether the people who hurt us deserve to be happy again! And also the top shortage. We're bringing that discussion back around.

Well pals, we are finally at Season Three, which Carly describes as "a real treat," which was sarcastic, obviously. Writer / Actor / Filmmaker Fawzia Mirza joins us as we address topics including looking at your peeper in the mirror, Alice and Dana's breakup turning Alice into a completely different character, Jenny's refusal to be a nice Jewish girl who acts like bad things don't happen, Tina hating the word "clit", Kate Clinton's cameo as a sex therapist peddling ice cube trays, Bette's passionate unemployment and Lara's special cookies for Dana. We also meet Max and Angus for the first time, see Helena in a white bikini, and meet Carmen's Mom.

Full of gay pride? Full of gay shame? Either way, this week’s episode of “To L and Back” is for you as we journey through the Seven Stations of the Cross and a lightly attended Pride Parade in West Hollywood with very special guest, actress/writer/noted bottom Chingy! Dana’s brother Howie pays her and Alice a surprise visit. Bette and her backwards spine dress hang out at the hospital with Melvin, who doesn’t want to touch the fetus through Tina’s belly because that would be highly inappropriate. Mark’s invasive video project has sent Jenny on a psychological spiral but she has some choice words for the filmmaker, too. Also, Shane’s ready to get into her #hamsterpast with Carmen and you can put THAT on your clipboard. We’re gonna be riding into the sunset with the motorcycle lesbians. Plus: tips on what NOT to eat before a three-hour BDSM seminar!

Listen I don’t mean to sound like a bad feminist but Bette Porter you have been MEAT-TAGGED and the ladies are lining up around the block to sign your dance card after this gripping classical guitar concert! Cobie Smulders, however, is NOT in line, although she does look great in that vest and she makes some pretty cool mobiles. Also, Veronica Bloom’s gonna peel her face off her face, Venice Beach hosts Shell Art with Tina and a Brawl with Shane, Jenny educates her writing class on the joys of orgasming with another woman, Helena battles her ex (Winnie. Winnie Mann) for custody, Jenny and Carmen continue to awkwardly date and make out (PSA: don't slap someone in the face without their consent!) and Mark CONTINUES TO EXIST.

Elsewhere this week, a protest breaks out at the California Art Center over whether or not it is true that Art = Filth, landing Bette, Candace, Alice, Dana and Shane in the ’ol clinker, where Candace and Bette fight sexual tension with road trip games. Meanwhile, Dana’s monster girlfriend is left alone with her cat, Tina does 150 good deeds in one day, Kit starts a flirty friendship with a sexy drag king, Jenny and Marina both go on dates with Robin the Trapeze Artist and Tim enjoys beers and basketballs.

Join us — and special guests Be Steadwell, Marni Kellison, Laneia Jones and two “margaritas” as we tackle the Dinah Shore episode. Dana will meet Tonya, her guest liaison, who is the worst, and Shane will recall the girl who took her sunshine toy and then her heart, and Jenny, who is not a 100-footer, will buy a “lesbians wanted” t-shirt and deliver a short monologue on the topic of Marina. We will talk about how hot Candace the Carpenter is when she’s out here workin’, and our own Dinah Shore medical emergencies, and the truth about cats and dogs and lesbians and the harmonies of “Closer to Fine” and when we’re done, everybody will go to the pool! Just watch out for disease okay? Shane might not be around to leave you a bottle of water.

Hey have you seen any bread… for toast? Jenny hasn't… at least not yet. Also, Alice hasn't gotten her period yet but guess what WE DON'T CARE. While everybody sorts all that out, Dana gets a haircut, Francesca and Marina continue torturing each other with wicked games, Bette prepares for a Mommi-off with Fae Buckley, Tina wants to help at-risk children at the Institute for Social Justice Mart, Shane continues falling for Cherie but first has to teach her daughter how to do putt-putt golf, and Dana and Jenny run into each other at the intersection of Sad and Hot.
Also Riese was wrong about the palms being the last lesbian bar in LA, it was actually the last lesbian bar in West Hollywood and the second to last lesbian bar in LA. The last was The Oxwood Inn in the valley.

Do you need a bath? Well then, you and Jenny have something in common! This week on The L Word, all tights are off and the yacht party is ON. Also: the girls stage a very important intervention with Bette and Tina in hopes of saving them from sinking into the deep, sticky quicksand of boring pregnancy conversations, Kristin has an incorrect opinion about warm milk, Dana and Lara cry in a restaurant, Lisa sent Reiki vibes to Alice and wonders if she heard them, everybody gets very drunk, people dance in various ways, there’s some full-frontal nudity, and Shane has deep thoughts about love and marriage. For those riveting events and so much more, you will not want to miss this week’s episode of To L and Back!

Stuff those dirty ’shrooms in your face, poke her in the face and liquor in the rear and then brace yourself for a world in which suddenly nobody has a cell phone anymore cuz if they did there’d be no plot! Jenny’s still got her tights on though, just FYI, and Shane’s making some valuable business connections while Tim stomps around a lot, Bette takes a trip to New York City for an art opening, and Alice rides Lisa’s sensitive “lesbian-identified male” vibes. Will any of us be able to hold our horses for Twat the night? One thing’s for sure: Kristin really wants to bang a gong like ten times because WHAT THE L IS GOING ON HERE

Are you in the market for a whey protein smoothie? Well I hope so because that’s what you’re getting on this week’s “To L and Back,” in which we recap “Lawfully,” a real doozy of an episode in which Alice’s Mom is wild, Bette can’t believe Tina is gonna wear that dress, and Kristin would like Riese to stop saying “meat” so much!

Alice’s eccentric mother Lenore is here and ready to lie because, at least according to Jenny’s Professor Nick Whatever, “everyone’s a liar, dear.” But are they? Or has Hector Projector STRUCK AGAIN? Also: why is Bette being so mean? Who puts pee on a plate? Did Tim remember to DVR the slalom performance? Why isn’t Lara more excited about Dana’s incredible orgasm? Did Riese notice that Mr. Piddles was in the frame? This week we will tackle these questions and so many more as we discuss “Lies Lies Lies,” which was honestly a very dark episode of The L Word.

All hail Queen Peggy Peabody, who arrives this week for an art buying spree — but will she save Bette’s job?? Meanwhile, Lacey has discovered the joys of flyering, Lara’s finger injuries won’t get in the way of her hot date with Dana and Alice debates the pros and cons of asking Gabby to step off, bitch.

We drank a LOT of wine with Guinevere Turner (who played Gaby Deavoux and wrote for The L Word’s first two seasons) and along the way, spoke about dildos, working with your ex, the Chart’s origin story, the electric Season One writers room and a fateful trip to Dinah Shore. Beware! This interview contains spoilers!
This week on To L and Back, we’ve lovingly sliced tiny bits of our outstanding interview with Guinevere Turner into our recap of “Let’s Do It,” in which Alice pursues vaginal rejuvenation (for science!), the gals put together a mission to ascertain the disposition of one Ms Lara Perkins, Tim throws an awkward dinner party in an apron, and we all agree that pants were way too low-waisted in 2004. Also, our GIVE MIA KIRSHNER A RETROACTIVE EMMY campaign continues.

For Part Two of The L Word’s invigorating pilot, which Riese and Kristin honestly really liked a lot, lesbians have actual lesbian sex, nobody gets pregnant (yet!), Jenny has a big decision to make and The Chart begins tracking the mistakes of every lesbian, everywhere, forever.
