Phil Hartman married for a third and final time in 1987, and while the marriage was quite rocky, he and wife Brynn Omdahl had two children together. What Phil didn't know was that once they were together, they were both on a tragic countdown that would culminate in Phil's murder and Brynn's death by a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the early morning hours of May 28, 1998. By the time of his death at just 33, singer Sam Cooke had become a bona fide superstar, as well as being an effective activist in the movement for Black equality in America. He had also been married twice, and it's in the story of his second wife, Barbara Campbell Cooke, where things get very complicated, very fast. Because Barbara did not attend Sam Cooke's funeral alone. She was escorted by his friend, protege, and guitar player Bobby Womack, who drove her there in Sam's car, dressed in Sam's best clothes. Media mogul William Randolph Hearst can be cast as a hero or a villain of the 20th century, and plenty of writers have taken a stab at pinning down his legacy definitively. But one of the lesser remembered aspects of Hearst's life was his abandonment, in 1917, of his wife, Millicent, and their five sons, to spend the rest of his life with actress Marion Davies. One quirk of this arrangement is that Millicent never consented to a divorce from her husband, and while this scandalous state of affairs might have sunk a less powerful person, Hearst's ability to manipulate the vast media empire he owned protected him, and allowed Marion's life and career to flourish on the West Coast.

After finally catching a live performance of Hamilton the Musical this week, Alicia's mind returned to the wild life story of Hamilton antagonist Aaron Burr. Things didn't stop for him after the infamous duel, and Lin-Manuel Miranda's play doesn't even get into Burr's secret family, unacknowledged children, or his much later marriage to - and divorce from - one of the richest women in America. On March 5, 1973, Major League Baseball hosted what had to be the wildest pair of press conferences in its history. Yankees southpaw pitchers Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson, for reasons that defy any kind of good explanation, revealed to reporters from spring training that they had not merely swapped wives with each other, but lives. Months before, Mike had moved into Fritz's home, with Fritz's wife, two children, and dog, and Fritz had moved into Mike's, with Mike's wife, his two children, and his dog. It set off a firestorm that tanked both of their careers, and left a stadium's worth of bad feelings between the two old friends.

Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Edith Wharton came by her subject matter the old fashioned way: she was born into a prominent New York City family, and was subjected to the mores of the city's high society circle from birth. Rascal Flatts is one of the most celebrated country music acts of the 21st century, but when the band announced that it would break up after a farewell tour in January 2020, the story took a bunch of unexpected turns. Some stories contain great seeds of trash that bloom instead into a resilient forest, and that's our story today. Actor Robert Downey Jr., Marvel's Iron Man, famously had a rough start to his career. For years, he was in and out of rehab, in and out of jail, and keeping the Los Angeles Police Department plenty busy with various drug-fueled bad decisions. Talented though he obviously was, he was all but written off by Hollywood in the early 2000s, when he finally found the strength to sit with his demons and chose not to let them control him any longer. There was also a long relationship with Sarah Jessica Parker and a doomed - for obvious reasons - first marriage along the way.

When The Sopranos premiered on HBO in 1999, no one knew how thoroughly it would change television for a generation. Mob boss Tony Soprano, portrayed so ably by actor James Gandolfini, was a complex anti-hero who was capable of both shocking violence and everyman confusion and ambivalence about his role as a father, husband, son, mobster, and human being. Gandolfini himself may have been the perfect actor for the role, but becoming Tony Soprano was harder than the public knew. He battled his own demons throughout the series run, including during his divorce from his first wife, while the few years he had remaining post-Sopranos at least seem to have represented a fresh start.

80's heartthrob Corey Feldman is an integral piece of film history from the decade. In movies like Gremlins, The Goonies, Stand By Me, and - alongside the second half of "The Two Coreys," Corey Haim - The Lost Boys, he was simply everywhere and seemingly in everything. Years of financial mismanagement, poor crops, massive unemployment, and a swelling population in Paris itself all contributed to a growing dissatisfaction with King Louis XVI and the monarchy in general. The King’s cause wasn’t helped at all by a lingering suspicion that his wife, Queen Marie Antoinette, was a profligate spender and an Austrian spy, but Marie Antoinette’s reputation took a calamitous hit in 1785, when an ambitious con artist named Jeanne de la Motte hatched a plan to acquire one of the most expensive jewelry pieces ever crafted.

Playing on the vanity and avarice of one of her lovers, Cardinal Louis de Rohan, Jeanne and her crew succeeded in boosting a piece worth $2 million – and forever ended any goodwill the French public had toward their Queen.

Our Coronation Countdown continues with a scion of House Windsor who has never held a title, but has still made some waves for the Palace.
