Featured in TIR Episode 173, Part 2 of 2: Drummer-producer Earl Young, a key contributor to the Philadelphia soul sound of the 1970s and founder of successful singing group The Trammps. Elected to the Musicians Hall of Fame in 2016, Young is an inventor of the disco drumming style and often credited as popularizing four-on-the-floor bass drum beats as well as extensive use of the hi-hat cymbal. 

Among the group of musicians known as MFSB, Young recorded with greats like the Stylistics, Billy Paul, Joe Simon, the O’Jays, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, the Delfonics, the Spinners, Blue Magic, the Whispers, the Manhattans, the Mighty Clouds of Joy, the Temptations, Phyllis Hyman, Wilson Pickett, B.B. King and the Salsoul Orchestra. Besides the Trammps’ classic “Disco Inferno,” Young also played on the Blue Notes’ “If You Don’t Know Me by Now” and O’Jays’ “For the Love of Money.”
