Featured in TIR Episode 193, Part 2 of 2: Robin Russell, drummer and composer for the seminal Detroit-based soul-funk collective consisting of the Nite-Liters and New Birth. He played with both beloved acts as the former became the instrumental foundation for the latter’s vocalists and combined to release more than a dozen classic albums during the 1970s.
Nine of those albums entered the R&B Top 40 and from those albums the group charted 10 Top 30 R&B singles. Those hits included “It’s Impossible,” “K-Jee,” “I Can Understand It,” “It’s Been a Long Time,” “Wildflower” and “Dream Merchant.” At the same time, the ensemble became famous for its powerful live performances.
Here he not only talks about those experiences but also playing with Little Richard, Johnny "Guitar" Watson and others. Russell also shares his 15-year stint playing drums for Mother Nature and delighted passersby at Los Angeles' Griffith Park.
