The Winter Solstice scientifically took place at 9:28pm UTC today (December 21) no matter where you lived. But esoterically, traditionally, and historically, it is a festival called Yule and it lasts three days. Yule marks the transition of power between the Oak King, god of the waxing year who rules from Yule to Litha (summer solstice), and the Holly King, god of the waning year, who rules the other half of the year until Yule again. Both of these gods are in essence the ‘green man’, or ‘wild’ man of the woods bringing gifts of fruit, seeds, nuts, etc., like Santa. This nature-god is a saint bringing blessings to man just like the warmth and light of the sun. Since the winter solstice is the shortest day of the year, and the darkest night, the sun is our only hope - a savior - in restoring our world. This occurs when the white horse of the apocalypse rides in the spring, but until then we must contend with the pale horse, or khlōros, a pale-yellow-green animal representing death - think of the changing of leaves and dormant plants since khlōros relates to chlorophyll. Santa’s naughty or nice list is part of the contractual clause (claus) and it relates to the weighing of souls in the end times.
