Unbelievable? offers a weekly podcast, blog, and video series hosted by Ruth Jackson and a team of thinkers and Christian apologists.
The podcast Unbelievable? is created by Premier Unbelievable?. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).
Get ready for a riveting episode of Unbelievable? part of our ongoing series Rights of Life and Death. Today in The Abortion Debate: Life, Equality, and Choice, we're diving headfirst into the contentious and thought-provoking topic of abortion. What does it mean to say that life begins? What would it take for the fetus or the child to have a right to life, and for this to outweigh the mother’s right to choice? How do we determine moral value? It's a debate that strikes at the very core of life, equality, and personal choice. Brace yourselves as we navigate the delicate balance between the rights of the child and the rights of the mother.
Joining us on this electrifying debate led by moderator Roger Bolton are two extraordinary guests. First, we have Ann Furedi, a leading global pro-choice advocate for almost 40 years, who worked for 17 years as CEO of British Pregnancy Advisory Service. She has written extensively on the ethics of abortion and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Social Sciences by the University of Kent. Her groundbreaking book, 'The Moral Case for Abortion: A Defense of Reproductive Choice,' lays out the moral arguments empowering women to make decisions about their pregnancies.
But that's not all. Presenting the Christian worldview and opposing abortion on demand is Dr. Calum Miller, an NHS doctor and an unwavering pro-life advocate. With a medical degree from the prestigious University of Oxford and a deep understanding of philosophy and biblical studies, Dr. Miller brings a unique insight into the intricacies of abortion policy in practice. He's here to challenge our assumptions and shed light on the moral value of the unborn.
In this high-voltage discussion, we'll explore the burning questions that lie at the heart of the abortion debate. When does life truly begin? Is there ever a justifiable reason to take another life? How do we assign moral value to the unborn? And are there conditions that would tip the scales in favour of granting the fetus a right to life that supersedes a mother's right to choice?
Hold on tight as we unpack the very definitions of 'pro-life' and 'pro-choice' and their profound implications for the beginning of life, human equality, and personal autonomy. We won't shy away from the tough questions, including the role of women's choice and the intersection of abortion with women's equality. And for those wondering if men should have a voice in this conversation, we'll address that too.
Prepare for an exhilarating, thought-provoking, and mind-expanding discussion. Tune in to this week's episode of Unbelievable as we embark on a quest to unravel the intricate threads of the abortion debate. Don't miss out on this explosive episode.

Should anyone be eligible for medical assistance in dying?
"Choosing Death: Assisted Dying, Assisted Suicide, Murder – Who Decides?"
Should the power to decide be granted to everyone when it comes to medical assistance in dying? A recent Canadian survey sheds light on the attitudes towards euthanasia and assisted dying, revealing startling statistics. Poverty, homelessness, mental illness, and disability – these factors, according to the Canadian survey, justify access to euthanasia for a significant portion of the population. Shocking, but perhaps not surprising is that the younger generation, in particular, supports these views, with percentages reaching as high as 41% for reason of poverty, and 60% for being disabled.
Death and dying have always been subjects that people tend to avoid discussing, but they demand our attention. Assisted dying, in particular, is a challenging and highly emotional topic that cannot be ignored. Each culture holds its own beliefs and attitudes towards the inevitable. Often, we are thrust into this discussion by circumstances – a close friend, a family member, or a beloved person falling severely ill, either gradually or suddenly. As Christians, it is crucial for us to engage in conversations about death. When is the right time to die?
Some argue that doctors should have the authority to provide medical assistance in dying. In Canada, laws surrounding assisted dying are expanding to include various situations where individuals have the right to choose death, even without a terminal illness. However, should doctors, who are meant to heal, be asked to take lives? And what does Christianity have to say about this contentious issue? Is it our prerogative to determine the timing of our own death?
Join Roger Bolton as he hosts this vital discussion, featuring UK-based Dr. Mark Pickering from the Christian Medical Fellowship and Canadian doctor Ellen Wiebe.
Dr Mark Pickering is the Chief Executive of CMF (UK/Ireland). He is based in London where he also works as a secure environment GP (in prisons and similar institutions). He has a long term interest in bioethics and often speaks on behalf of the Care Not Killing Alliance. He has previously worked as a hospice junior doctor.

This week on Unbelievable’s Coronation special Roger Bolton asks how important is the established Church of England to the fabric of life in the United Kingdom and beyond? Does King Charles as Supreme Governor of the Church of England have divine purpose? Academic and author Dr. Jonathan Chaplin of Wesley House, Cambridge suggests we should ditch the religious aspects of the Coronation to better reflect multicultural Britain. Catherine Pepinster author and broadcaster argues the sacral aspects of the Coronation act as a enduring symbol of the country's heritage. Will King Charles III embrace Christianity as a guiding force in his reign? Should he forge a new path for a changing nation? And what is the role of the established church in public life?
Catherine Pepinster is an author and expert on the history of coronations, and was editor of the Catholic Tablet journal for over 13 year. She is the author of Defenders of the Faith - The British Monarchy, Religion and the Next Coronation and explains the significance of the deeply sacred Christian event and the unifying role it can play in the nation and beyond. Dr. Jonathan Chaplin wrote Beyond Establishment - Resetting Church-State relations in England and- as a committed Christian and Anglican - proposes a radical rethinking, of the relationship between the Church and the state.

This week we play Justin Brierley's personal favourite episode: the discussion he hosted live in California, between Christian apologist John Lennox and US talk show host Dave Rubin, from 2019. Part of The Big Conversation, they discussed the question of where the next generation is turning to in the search for meaning and identity. Is God finally dead, as Nietzsche once declared? Or is there space for a renaissance of religious belief in the modern world?

The Big Conversation - Episode 1 | Season 5
The rise of Christianity has shaped the modern world, but are its historical origins best explained in purely naturalistic terms, or the explanation the first followers gave – that Jesus had risen from the dead?
New Testament historian Bart Ehrman doesn’t believe in the miraculous claims of the New Testament, including the resurrection of Jesus. New Testament scholar Justin Bass argues in his book ‘The Bedrock of Christianity’ for a number of facts concerning the death and resurrection of Jesus, that point to its truth. They debate scripture, history and the resurrection.

CS Lewis said "If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world."
Peter Kreeft is a philosophy professor and well known Christian thinker and writer. He defends the "argument from desire". Does our experience of transcendent longing indicate that there is a God to satisfy it?
Atheist philosopher Richard Norman says that the argument amounts to wish-fulfillment.
They both sat down to discuss this issue, first broadcast in 2013.

To honour the passing of the great scientist and Christian educator Tom McLeish, we're replaying this show first broadcast in 2017.
David Hutchings is a physics teacher and prof Tom McLeish chaired the Royal Society’s education committee. Both Christians co-authored the book ‘Let there be Science: Why God Loves Science and Science needs God’ arguing that the Christian worldview has fuelled many of the greatest leaps forward in science.
Joining David and Tom was Suzie Sheehy, an accelerator physicist at Oxford University who is agnostic when it comes to religion. She argued that science doesn’t need God since it’s a fundamentally human activity.

Scott believes that the best apologetic method is to assume that Christianity is true and show why a non-Christian is suppressing that truth. Atheists presuppose the existence of God even to argue against Him. This approach is called presuppositional or covanental apologetics.
Kurt Jaros believes that method is flawed and argues for the primacy of Natural Theology (or evidential apologetics) in presenting the case for Christianity to non-believers.

Classic replay from the archives. Former atheist Holly Ordway came to Christian faith via poetry and literature. She tells her story and explains her passion for literary apologetics.
Laura Miller is an online literary critic and an agnostic. She loved the Narnia stories as a child but felt betrayed by CS Lewis after discovering their Christian symbolism as an adult.
Holly and Laura discuss the rights and wrongs of using literature for a Christian message. Do great art, poetry and literature point to a transcendent reality?

Another classic show from the archives. Randal Rauser is a Christian, John Loftus is a former-Christian-now-atheist. They co-authored the book “God Or Godless? debating 20 controversial questions.”
They joined me for two discussions. In his “Outsider Test for Faith” Loftus claimed that Christians would abandon their faith if they critiqued it in the way they do other religions. But Rauser argued that Loftus needed to put his own atheistic worldview through the test.
They also debated whether stories of miracles can count as evidence of the supernatural.

'You just can't make this stuff up!' That, in a nutshell is the contention of Mike D'Virgilio's book 'Uninvented: Why the Bible could not be made up and the evidence that proves it'. He says that the life of Jesus doesn't read like made up stories, myths and legends.
He engages with ex-Christian Matthew Taylor, host of the 'Still Unbelievable' podcast, who believes that many stories and details in the Gospels are the result of pious fiction on the part of later authors.

Can a skeptical doctor be persuaded that there is medical evidence for modern day healing?
Craig Keener, author of 'Miracles Today', returns to the show to debate one of his fiercest critics Peter May, a retired medical doctor who says he has never encountered a compelling case of miracle healing after decades of investigation. Craig is joined by Joshua Brown of the Global Medical Research Institute who defends two cases of healing - of a digestive tract and restored vision - which he says pass Peter May's criterion for miracles.

Christians believe that Jesus' death on the cross provided the atonement for sins. But in what way? Advocates of the penal substitution view hold that God punished the Son, instead of us. Others argue this is an unjust way of viewing the crucifixion and prefer the 'Christus Victor' view, that Jesus defeats the powers of evil on the cross.
In this classic replay, Steve Jeffery defended Penal Substitution, while Alan Molineaux questioned it. We also had contributions from American theologian & church leader Greg Boyd in defense of Christus Victor and UK leader Dave Bish in defense of Penal Substitutionary Atonement. From the archives: NT Wright is a leading professor of New Testament at the forefront of what has been called the New Perspective on Paul. His reassessment of the words of Paul on "justification" led to concern from some reformed church leaders. James White, reformed Bible scholar of Alpha and Omega ministries, discussed with NT Wright as they sought to find out what Paul really said about justification.

Were Victorian missionaries a tool of oppression, exploitation and empire as some critics claim? Or did they leave a legacy of education, healthcare and eradicating inhumane practises?

In Jan 2013 a new church began in London - with singing, a sermon and a great sense of community - but for godless people. Atheist stand up comedian Sanderson Jones who co-founded "the Sunday Assembly" talked about its first meeting and why he set it up. David Robertson, at the time a church minister, asked questions about whether an "atheist church" makes sense and what Christians could learn from it. Justin was also joined by two of those who attended the first service, Rory Fenton and Simon Jenkins.

Michael Gungor and his wife Lisa were pioneers in the Christian music scene, building a loyal fan base through Gungor's music and podcasts such as The Liturgists. However, Michael's recent turn towards an increasingly progressive, msytical and deconstructed interpretation of faith has left many Christians confused.
Evan Wickham is a pastor in San Diego and a friend and former musical collaborator with Gungor. They engage in a discussion on Michael's spiritual journey and why Evan has stayed within a historic orthodox Christian tradition.

From Dec 2012. Richard Carrier is the world's foremost proponent of the "mythicist" view of Jesus - that he never actually existed as a historical person.
He explained his theory that St. Paul only ever spoke of Jesus in the spiritual realm and that the Gospels are "extended parables".
Mark Goodacre is NT professor at Duke University. He contended that Carrier's mythicist view is extrememly far fetched and the evidence for the historical Jesus is beyond reasonable doubt.

How should we understand Old Testament accounts of warfare and violence where God seems to command the slaughter of men, women and children?
Paul Copan, author of 'Is God A Vindictive Bully?' aims to show why the Old Testament accounts, severe as they may seem, are not incompatible with Jesus in the New Testament. Randal Rauser, author of 'Jesus Loves Canaanites', says that too many 'apologists for genocide' are defending the indefensible and argues for an alternative reading of scripture.
They discuss whether the warfare passages are hyperbolic, whether non-combatants would have been killed, and whether the term 'genocide' is appropriate.

As the global pandemic subsides, the way the Covid lockdowns were implemented in churches still divides Christians. The Frankfurt Declaration has been signed by church leaders who are concerned that civil and religious liberties are being eroded by Government overreach.
One of the signatories is Anglican priest Jamie Franklin, a co-host of the Irreverend podcast. He has been critical of the church's handling of Covid saying it fell into line with restrictions too readily. He discusses the issues with John Stevens of the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches (FIEC) who believes that the government mandates were appropriate for what was known at the time.

71 atheists and agnostics signed up to the experiment, comitting to pray for God to reveal himself to them over 40 days. Did anyone end up believing in God?
We revealed the results and heard from a variety of people who took part, including Andrew, Kendra, Laura, Cang & Freki as well as exploring questions that arose.
Was this really an 'experiment'? What does an atheist pray? Does it matter which god is being prayed to? Do the results have any bearing on the question of God's existence?

In this one-on-one edition of the show, Justin Brierley spoke to New Testament Historian Bart Ehrman about his recent book "Did Jesus Exist?" which argues for the historical fact of Jesus of Nazareth.
Ehrman, whose books are more usually at odds with evangelicals, was this time attacked by atheist proponents of "mythicism" - the view that Jesus never existed.
He responded to the criticisms, including mythicists Bob Price and Richard Carrier and answered questions sent in by Unbelievable? listeners.

She talked to atheist blogger Hemant Mehta (aka The Friendly Atheist) about why the moral argument helped her in the journey and he quizzed her over why she chose Catholicism. Listener questions were also included.

Robert is a disfellowshiped JW but still holds to Watchtower doctrine. Tony is a former JW, now a Christian pastor. They talked about whether JWs rely upon a works-based salvation, return to the 144,000 and discuss whether Jesus is the Archangel Michael and not the son of God, as Robert claims.

Recorded at Imperial College London in 2012. Christian astrophysicist Hugh Ross of Reasons To Believe debated atheist biologist Lewis Wolpert.
Ross brought evidence for God from Big Bang cosmology, explaining why scientific advance provides a testable model of Biblical Creation. Wolpert said that belief in God is a by-product of evolution and nothing more.

Young Earth Creationists (YEC) claim the earth and universe is only some 6000 years old according to the Bible and that any science that goes against this is flawed.
Old Earth Creationists (OEC) argue that the Bible does not commit us to a 24hr day view of creation days, but that the earth and universe is, as mainstream science predicts, billions of years old.
This debate was recorded in front of a live audience at Gunnersbury Baptist Church in 2012. Representing OEC were Hugh Ross & Ken Samples of Reasons To Believe. Representing YEC were Andy MacIntosh & Stephen Lloyd.
