Craig and Jonah have a lengthy conversation with a newly-married listener named Josh who recently found the podcast and was upset at some of our video clips. After Josh threatened to call our bishop on account of our content, we invited Josh on the show and he graciously accepted the invitation to defend the faith. This episode is our discussion with Josh about his complaints and criticisms, which led to a respectful and productive discussion on topics such as masturbation, marriage, abstinence, addiction, and even Onan. Be sure to like and comment on this episode and let Josh know you appreciate his open and frank discussion with us. Josh discussed his journey as a Catholic, temporary atheist, and past addictions to certain sins of the flesh. And how he came back to the Church, and is a fervent defender of Catholic teaching. We discuss a lot, including masturbation, wet dreams, Aquinas, oral sex, theology of the body, confession, hell, mercy, intimacy, and communication. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action." "The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose." For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved." To form an equitable judgment about the subjects' moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability. Section 2363: http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/para/2368.htm 2368 A particular aspect of this responsibility concerns the regulation of procreation. For just reasons, spouses may wish to space the births of their children. It is their duty to make certain that their desire is not motivated by selfishness but is in conformity with the generosity appropriate to responsible parenthood. Moreover, they should conform their behavior to the objective criteria of morality: When it is a question of harmonizing married love with the responsible transmission of life, the morality of the behavior does not depend on sincere intention and evaluation of motives alone; but it must be determined by objective criteria, criteria drawn from the nature of the person and his acts, criteria that respect the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love; this is possible only if the virtue of married chastity is practiced with sincerity of heart.
