Janna N (@janna_n / Klunkerkranich) presents United We Rise Podcast Nr. 125 ████████████████████████████████████████████████ ▌I Did your approach on creating music change during the pandemic and did it maybe even influence your style? Yes, absolutely. The pandemic was a kind of death and rebirth for me in many ways as an artist and creative. This was also largely because in 2020 I enrolled in my studies for Sound Engineering and Audio Production, which has completely transformed the way I hear and understand music. During the peak of the lockdown between 2020-2021 I felt quite defeated, like many, when I thought of my DJ career and future opportunities, and I surrendered to possible end of it. However, I was lucky in that I was still fully engrossed in music from other directions and I dove deep into understanding and doing sound design and mixing/mastering, as well as I became kind of obsessed with learning about the evolution of electronic music from 1900s avant grade to present day genres. I was producing a lot of experimental pieces and really got into deconstructing sounds and elements of dance music. I also got interested in how instruments and analog equipment are used in different ways across electronic music. All of this completely transformed who I am as an artist and of course, as a DJ. Previously, I was almost exclusively playing downtempo deep/organic house and now I have a thirst for more genres and more sounds. I would say I am still evolving because I am still learning and haven’t stopped exploring all that I mentioned above, but I am having so much more fun mixing and playing now, which I really didn’t think it could get more enjoyable. I would also say that there was a kind of overall change in the music I am attracted to and choose to play, because what I am looking for and desire to create is different. Previously my music was almost solely deep and exploratory, now it still is a bit of that but really I just crave music that makes me shake my ass and feel alive. ▌II How would you describe your style? I’m deeply interested in many genres, from dub, breaks and UK bass, to psytrance, electro, acid house, deep house, leftfield house, classic techno, trance, old school hardstyle and more. I enjoy playing with elements of them, having fun with the pitch, and and blending them all together to what becomes a predominantly mixed house sound. I’m attracted to progressive and hypnotic compositions, deep and dominant bass, acid sounds and acid baselines, rolling and polyrhythmic percussive sounds, and groovy, bubbly beats. I also enjoy balancing dark and dirty moments with light and funky. My movement between genres is fluid, but the overall mood I bring would be bounce and grind packaged in some kind of dreaminess. It brings me so much joy to create this for dancers. ▌III How did you prepare this mix and what was your main inspiration? In general I have a daily routine of digging for, analyzing, reading about, and sorting my music, which is the largest chunk of preparation. I think consistency with that and really knowing your music is important for building better mixes. But for this one specifically, being honest I had a lot to manage recently which had me overall quite tense. I was doing all of the de-stress things but I still found my creative output suffering. So I went for a big dance, had fun and felt myself, then I sifted through my folders and made my selection.
