This week’s Urban Valor episode features Army veteran Travis Story. Travis grew up in Villa Park, CA. He was the youngest of five boys. His father’s rule for the boys was they had to leave the house at the age of 18, which was part of Travis’ inspiration for joining the Army. He enlisted as a Black Hawk Helicopter Mechanic and got married while on active duty. As Travis’ marriage fell apart, so did his mental health. He attempted to get help while on active duty to no avail. His actions, due to his frustration for the lack of help, got him demoted from E-5 to E-3. Upon transitioning, Travis’ mental health continued to spiral. He got arrested at the VA while trying to get help and found himself facing a 15-year prison sentence.
Military mental health and veteran mental health continue to be a consistent and repetitive story on Urban Valor, whether it's combat veterans with PTSD or other forms of mental illness.

This week’s Urban Valor episode features Marine Captain Kelsie Hancock.
Kelsie grew up in Southern Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay, fishing and crabbing. She went to school across the street from Patuxent River Naval Air Station and would watch the jets fly over and knew she wanted to be a Marine since the 4th grade. During her enlistment, Kelsie was reunited with a former school colleague at a camping trip in Zion National Park, Marine Captain, and V-22 Osprey Pilot Nick Losapio.
The two hit it off, started dating, and became engaged. Unfortunately, Captain Nick Losapio was killed during an Osprey crash in June of 2022, 58 days before he and Kelsie were set to be married. Kelsie has since reenlisted in the Marines as a reserve officer to help her get back on her feet and honor what Nicked loved to be with his comrades.
This is a devastating listen, so we ask you to show your love and support for Kelsie Hancock as she courageously and openly shares her story without fear or holding back.
We're honored and appreciative of Kelsie's willingness to share her story with Urban Valor and co-founder Josh Guiterrez.

He leaves us with how enduring so much trauma in the Marines affected his transition back into the civilian world.
We are so honored to sit down with Ron Galasso, Marine Vietnam Veteran, because a lot of the previous generation of veterans (and still many today, of course) feel they need to hold in information and avoid talking about their mental traumas or acknowledge their PTSD symptoms.

Elliot went on to become a professional R&B singer recording his own albums. Elliott has sung the National Anthem over 100 times for organizations not limited to the Dodgers, Lakers, Rams SF Giants, and several other professional sports organizations.

Today’s Urban Valor story brings us Marine Corps veteran Corporal Paul
Parkhurst in this veteran interview.
Paul takes us through his life before joining the Marines, while in
the Marines, and the struggle of transitioning out of the military after
witnessing traumatic experiences.
Paul recalls a war story where he was shipped off to Kuwait in 2003 in
preparation for the Invasion of Iraq, just 2 months after joining his fleet.
As part of Task Force Tarawa, Paul battled the mental strain of sleep exhaustion and stressors of war intensified by the reminders of the price of battle as his convoy drove past
dead bodies along the roads.
He shares with us the psychological effects of leaving for a second
deployment immediately following the first and highlighting the impact of
being subjected to horrific circumstances. Paul's war story also reminds the audience
that leaving the service -- which for him happened 9 days after returning
home from Afghanistan -- does not mean leaving the stress and anxiety
behind.
Paul courageously speaks about the consequences of war and the necessity
of seeking assistance regarding mental health, which could manifest into
physical ailments.
To those watching, this episode will be a reminder of the impact war has on
combat veterans while in combat and even more so after coming home from
combat.
