Happy 75th! This marks our 75th episode here at Vinyl Ventures and we wanted to celebrate by talking about some underdogs! Producers don't always get the credit they deserve, so we wanted to give them a chance to shine. Comment below if we forgot anyone!

Many of the best and biggest names in music left us too soon. This trip around the turntable, the Vinyl Ventures crew looks back on some of our favorite music from those artists who left us too soon. There are more than just the members of the 27 Club here. The list of Rock Stars and amazing musicians who died too soon is so much longer than we have time for in one show. While these musicians left us early, they left an indelible mark on our music-loving hearts and live on forever in those records we love to play.
Rest In Power!

No way are the Vinyl Ventures crew ranking every Rolling Stones album. They don't want to do a 3-hour show, so how about the top ten. The greatest band in the world are still putting out records in 2024, so there is a lot to choose from in their ranking albums. Narrowing the list to the top ten makes it an easier task, but ranking those 10 makes the task a bit more challenging. Faithful listeners you may not agree with the Vinyl Ventures crew, but lists are super fun.

Hey vinyl crew, this week we take a look at some favorite double albums Jay and John have collected over the years. It could be Double Trouble or Double the Fun...
Double albums became a thing in the late 60s, and since then, many pop artists have released DoubleAlbums. They can be twice as nice or double bummers.
Let us know if any of these choices made you do a double take! (Or spit take...)

Days of the week is the theme for this spin on the the old Victrola. Join the Vinyl Ventures crew for songs in the key of a day of the week. Fun discoveries abound. Some days are more popular for artists and bands to sing about than others. Some days don't get much love, hump day, Wednesday is not the most popular day to sing about. Tune in and drop out while you count down the days to the weekend.

1974 turns 50, along with some outstanding vinyl. After Rock and Roll took over the charts 10 years earlier when the Beatles hit the US, '74 was almost like a pause year. John and Jay explore what was happening with music in 1974 . Was it just a transitional year, or was music changing tune in to find out.

Jay Jay French is a connoisseur of music...a lot of different music. He's been there and done that. From forming Twisted Sister 50 years ago, to becoming a highly sought-after producer and manager, to becoming a motivational speaker...he's done all of this one way...his.
Join the guys, as Jay Jay takes them on a wild ride through all the "twists" and turns in rock-n-roll that usually throw a lot of people off. From his being a Grateful Dead devotee to playing in clubs owned by Mafia bosses, this is a fantastic and entertaining talk.
If you want brutally honest, unfiltered thoughts on everything from the New York Dolls to the assassination of JFK, buckle-up, and keep your arms and legs inside the car at all times!

In this trip around the turntable, the guys share some of their favorite colors...bands, songs or albums with colors in their name or title.
As we curate our collections, it's easy to forget about everything we acquire and sometimes the simple act of figuring out what albums, artists or songs have colors in their title is a great way to re-familiarize yourself with what you have.
There are more than you think. So hop on and take a spin with John and Jay as they explore the colors of their collections.
Australia is a unique country and one that has produced some amazing music. On this episode we celebrate the music of the magical land. Our special guest, a real Australian - Will Foster, talks about some of his favorite bands on the "Pub Rock" scene. If you are hoping to hear us talk about Men at Work, AC DC, or the Bee Gees your hopes will be dashed. Lots of great music to be discovered on this fabulous edition of Vinyl Ventures.
John and Jay explore the records that brought bands back into the spotlight they used to bask in. Just... don't tell LL Cool J we used THAT word in the title, John lost our thesaurus and we couldn't think of another word.

We all have favorite bands and favorite records, and those favorites can change from time to time, depending on a lot of things. This time around the horn the guys step out on a ledge and rank the studio releases from the mighty Led Zeppelin.
With only 9 albums, one might think that this would be an easy task. Alas, no...it is not!
Favorites or not, the crew manages to put Zeppelin's oeuvre in order of preference. Song-to-song, artwork, and many other details come into play as the guys try to agree on an order that does justice to one of the most respected catalogs in rock n' roll history.

"O Canada" did not become the official Canadian national anthem until 1980 with the passage of the National Anthem Act. As National anthems go, it is a beautiful song. On O Canada the Vinyl Ventures crew share some of their favorite Canadian Artists.
For this show Blame Canada like the parents of a juvenile character in the 1999 animated film South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut did. The film featured a satirical song "Blame Canada", the parents, decide to blame Canada for the trouble their children are getting into since watching a Canadian-made film. The song was nominated for an Oscar, it did not win. Or even better yet Blame Vinyl Ventures!

We sometimes take for granted the thought, inspiration, and investment that artists and their record companies put into how albums are presented.
The guys take it for granted no longer, and share some of their favorite album packages and artwork.
The album is an art form, in and of itself. The package finally gets it's due in this first of what will likely be many Nice Package! episodes.

The Vinyl Ventures crew wraps up their Essential Album shows with the 10th installment. What started as a discussion list in the summer of 2021 has become some of the most popular shows on Vinyl Ventures. 100 albums each seems easy when you have a a few thousand in the collection. But in practice with each show it gets a little more challenging as some artists and bands get left off the list. It's a wrap on the Essential lists and this show is a great one.

Greatest hits albums are sometimes snubbed by the vinyl community. Often these collections are a cash grab by record companies, and artists can be left out of the decision making process. Occasionally an artist sees their sales, presence and notoriety grow from Greatest Hits releases. It’s a mixed bag across the industry for sure. For the Vinyl Ventures crew, when to buy a Greatest Hits album versus albums in an artist’s catalog comes down to how they feel about the group.
Some albums are essential, even if it is an artist that doesn't fully resonate with a listener. Picking which ones to buy Best-Ofs from and and which ones to do a deep catalog dive into is in the ears of the beholder. On this episode the guys recommend some of their favorite Greatest Hits Collections.

She Sides is the long-overdue show the Vinyl Ventures crew admittedly should have already done...many episodes ago. This time we're honoring and recognizing great female performers and bands who have made a mark on our musical tastes.
We may have left some off but we'll undoubtedly re-visit this topic and do more shows that celebrate our favorite "She Sides".
It just may be one small step for women and one giant leap for womankind.

This time around the turntable, we offer a love letter to vinyl enthusiasts. Okay...maybe not a love letter, but a celebration of love songs and/or non-love songs. This can be music that creates an ambiance, music that makes your little heart go pitter-patter, or music to express those heart-felt emotions we celebrate on the Hallmark-created Valentine's Day. The guys discuss a few records that are out of their typical wheelhouse and come up with some suggestions to celebrate the annual day of love. Happy V.D.!
A 50 year anniversary for some vintage releases. Singer songwriters were starting to make big waves in music, reggae was busting onto the scene and the Beatles 3 years post breakup were still relevant. MASH was a hit show on TV and the Miami Dolphins won the Super Bowl. A new album was under $5 and most concerts were under $10 to see future legends.
The Vinyl Ventures crew wraps up 2022 in our world. Highlighting some notable 2022 releases and paying tribute to some music greats the world lost. Live music came roaring back after the Covid years and vinyl continued its spectacular rebirth, with increased sales again. Most of all, the guys appreciate all the downloads and listens and look forward to a great 2023.
For over a year, the guys have wanted to sit with Keith Toombs for a Beatles-themed show. Well, it's here!
In this episode, Keith discusses the origins of the album (as opposed to singles) and just how much at the forefront of the album the Beatles were. They broke ground in countless ways, and were one of the first bands to consider the album an art form. If that weren't enough, they were also one of the first groups to experiment within the art form to introduce the world to the Concept Album.
The world owes a lot of the way we all think of an album to the Fab Four.
So sit back, relax, have a spot of tea and enjoy this fantastic journey through the history of the Beatles and the album.
As the year winds down, the guys are walking the gravelly confines of the end of the Essential Albums road. This time, another 20 are revealed according to our fearless Venturers.
Will the dark horses win out? Will the hits keep on coming? Tune in now and listen for the beginning...of the conclusion of our Essential Albums list. Don't Cost Nuthin'.
The 7th installment of the essential album list is like a James Bond film, change the characters (albums) and keep the same story-line resulting in a brilliant production. Maybe, just maybe, the Vinyl Ventures crew is creating a comparison that is a bit outlandish. But, on the essential show the boys break out some surprises to keep the list interesting.
The Urban Dictionary says - New Sh!t is a phrase that indicates a person has made some sort of significant change or has obtained something new. This could be anything from a relationship status change to obtaining something new/fresh or even suddenly bringing in a lot of money. It could pretty much be used to reference the recent purchase of fresh new anything such as weed or drugs. Or even a new job. Well, none of this sh!t applies, the VV guys are talking about releases from the last 20 years...that is the best a couple of old guys can do. Enjoy the show.
How is it not possible in doing 39 shows that the Vinyl Ventures crew had not done a live vinyl show is a crime. We are not sending the guys to jail, well at least not yet, but we are rectifying the crime. Thanks to a suggestion from a listener in Montreal, Canada , Kevin Groulx for the suggestion.
“Live music is the most primal form of energy release you can share with other people besides having sex or taking drugs.” ~ Kurt Cobain
At the beginning of this 100 Essential Album shows John and Jason thought - "No problem, we have thousands to choose from, this'll be easy". While it's not hard picking an album, it gets tougher picking the right album that the guys deem essential. Along the way by discovering hidden gems in their collections, or picking up that missing wax, this journey has been a treat. Thanks for joining the Vinyl Ventures gang for the ride.
1971, somehow Vinyl Ventures overlooked an incredible year for new releases from some Monsters of rock. Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin to name a few. Never forget 1971 it was a wonderful year for music and classic vinyl.
Essential Albums 5: The Fifth Element. In the twenty-first century, the universe is threatened by evil. The only hope for mankind is the Fifth Element-Vinyl Ventures' 5th installment of their essential albums list.
The guys have embarked on a seemingly impossible journey to list 100 essential albums each. With the fate of mankind hanging in the balance, the journey is only half complete. Music is the only hope and every listener strengthens the cause. Vinyl Venturers...UNITE!
Speed of lightning, roar of thunder, fighting all who rob or plunder...Underdog, Underdog, Underdog.
No, Vinyl Ventures is not doing a cartoon episode. The guys are talking about records that may not fit into other shows and records the guys don't get a chance to talk about often...the Underdog records.
(And, lest we forget Mr. Russell, Jay scratched the hell out of his Mom's Beatles records).
As the AC/DC song goes - It's a Long Way to the Top if Wanna Rock and Roll. Vinyl Ventures had a chance to sit down with Nick Light, (a record company executive) and learn how he got to the top. One day out of High School his career started as a roadie at the Ritz (now Webster's Hall). With some connections in the industry, Nick moved to California and started working his way through the record business. It was a circuitous route, but along the way he developed lasting relationships and connections that set him up for future success. So, buckle up, Vinyl Venturers...this is a fantastic talk.
You asked for it, you get it; another essential albums show. Listing 100 essential albums each is no small task, and on this 4th installment, the guys right the ship. After doing only 9 albums each on the last Essential Albums show they take this show to 11! Tune in and get your groove on.
On the second (long overdue) 3D episode, we dive into an epic (and of course) essential album by the thin white duke. We re-enlist the assistance of our "Fifth Beatle" Bill Hayse. Not sure where the other two members are coming from, but you get it. Bill is our third team member and his research on these 3D episodes is invaluable. Until the release of Ziggy, Bowie's releases had not had tremendous success. David had even explored being a mime, and was influenced, in a way, by Bob Dylan's acid dealer (now that's a tease)! This album really introduced the world to David Bowie, and propelled him to mega-stardom. Enjoy this fantastic discussion...it was definitely worth the wait.
In a their continued quest to name 100 essential albums the Vinyl Ventures crew list another number nine, number nine, albums each. Since the guys are not putting albums in order, each show list will contain some big hitters in the music world. Lists tend to favor the list makers taste, and The Return of the king is no different. The guys have some top notch releases on the show, enjoy.
1972, a 50 year celebration. How many albums do Jay and John have from 1972...a lot. It was a great year for music. America had settled into the 1970s after the decade of change the 1960s. Music changed from pop, Motown sing along songs to Heavy Metal, Progressive, Experimental and Singer Song Writers.
Tis' the season as the saying goes. Tis' the season to celebrate. To close out the year the guys thought it would be a good time to celebrate vinyl. Not just an ordinary celebration but a celebration of vinyl that puts a smile on our face or celebrates a specific day or event. Like any Vinyl Ventures episode the guys have fun with this list and discuss a bunch of vinyl they have not talked about in previous episodes. Let's celebrate!
What is essential? The actual definition is "absolutely necessary; extremely important."
It really means something different to each of us. Just as each album holds a special meaning to every one of us.
The guys add to the essential albums list with another 10 picks each. This list gets deeper into the collection for the guys and highlights another 20 amazing albums.
Vinyl Ventures usually focuses on albums. On this episode a guest, Steve Hoff, who collects and restores jukeboxes educates the guys on the uncharted waters of the wonderful world of jukeboxes and the 45s. Steve started out listening to 45s and a jukebox was the next step in his vinyl journey. We thought we knew a lot about vinyl, a whole new chapter is opened in front of us digging into the roots of the vinyl craze.
What is an essential album? How many albums are essential? Some may argue every album you own is essential, while others will say no that list can only be 20 essential albums. John and Jay begin this list with 10 essential albums each.
Every definition of essential is different and for each collector the list will be different. Vinyl Ventures loves lists and this kicks off what we hope will be a great discussion and an on-going series.
Karma records, store manager Doug Bauerle pulls back the curtain and talks about the business behind RSD. The conversation moves to what record collectors and watchers want to see released on RSD and possibilities for the next RSD Black Friday. In a deep thought moment the talk moves to hidden messages on album covers. Doug is our first return guest on VV (and yes, there is KISS talk). Get your groove on.
Music changed Pat's life and sent him on a trajectory as working musician. He worked the music circuit to New York in the 1970s, then to Nashville then back home to Cincinnati. After over a decade in the business Pat had a decision to make…then a chance meeting and fate took over and steered him down a different path to continue making music. Along the way he never stopped loving music and buying vinyl. And best of all, he still has all of those relics today.
In episode #13, we covered Sophomore albums but skipped over the obvious; Fantastic Freshman Favorites. In prepping for this show, our minds were blown realizing how many great first albums we own.
Dig into your collection and you'll discover how many artists delivered essential albums on their first outing. We know we missed some, and would love to hear what you think. Get Your Groove On!
To keep things interesting and new for 2021, this episode is a crossover/collaboration with our friends at the RutPOP podcast. We team up with Zach and Brandon to talk formative soundtracks, scores (and the difference), big influences and everything else in-between.
So many great soundtracks...so little time.
We're taking the show on the road to the Derby City Music Expo in Louisville, KY to sit down with Shayne Hiles, graphic designer, audiophile, and record dealer/collector. We enter uncharted territory, questioning the quality of sought-after Japanese vinyl pressings. Shayne shares his vinyl journey and delights us with many stories about collecting and dealing records. Join us on our first Road Show to the Derby City...we just may find some gems.
Tony Philputt, an Indianapolis original Punk guy, record store owner, Hollywood actor, musician (yep, he is a drummer, but don't hold that against him) and tournament champ on the cussing circuit, dropping more F-bombs than Richard Pryor when his hair was on fire. Lots of stories; everything from buying a Sex Pistols picture disc 45 in NY to opening for the Replacements. Tune in and drop out.
Vinyl Ventures #19 - Kit Haymond - record collector, musician, and music lover, delights the guys with stories from playing around the U.S., meeting fabled musicians and amazing vinyl finds. From one-of-a-kind rarities to well-known classics, Kit takes us on a journey from Punk to classic country and everything in-between.
Vinyl Ventures #18 - Season #2 kicks off with John and Jay talking about some of the best finds in 2020 at record stores. Record stores are the lifeblood of Vinyl Ventures...that is the reason the show exists. This year the boys plan to branch out more to record stores throughout the state of Indiana and the Midwest.
Vinyl Ventures #17 - WISH-TV Indy Style host Tracy Forner talks growing up in Michigan, the disadvantages for a vertical person at concerts and the art of collecting vinyl. An art, (okay addiction/sickness), he hopes to pass along to his children.
Indianapolis comedy legends Dave Dugan and Whitney Grayson talk vinyl and the long lost art of the deep listen. Going through Rolling Stones 500 best albums of all time and listening to every album.
Rudy Sarzo shares his amazing journey from a Cuban refugee at 10, to a beloved and legendary rock musician the world over. From Ozzy and Randy Rhoads, to Quiet Riot, Whitesnake, Dio, Blue Oyster Cult, The Guess Who and beyond.
It's an inspiring story of a rock & roll life lived to the fullest-the right way.
John and Jason talk with Rob Coyle, an Indianapolis-based record show promoter (Crossroads Music Show), dealer and lifelong collector. Vinyl was in Rob's blood, his father had thousands of records in the garage and dragged Rob along to weekend garage sales to find thousands more. Did you ever wonder what it takes to promote a record show, where dealers get the records, and who has the biggest show in the US? Tune in to find out.
John and Jay dive into second albums and discuss whether or not the sophomore album is a slump or a bigger hit. From Meatloaf to Oasis, to Cinderella to the Doors. What are the hits and what are the misses? A show first Point/Counterpoint with Weezer's Pinkerton is sure to entertain.
1970-the start of a new decade and the biggest band in the world, the Beatles break up. Protest songs, Heavy Metal takes a hold, and music takes center stage. Hop in the time machine with John and Jay and take a trip in the way back machine to 1970.
On this 3D (Deep Disc Dive) episode friend of the show Bill Hayse's incredibly deep research into The Dark Side of the Moon is like 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon with the album playing the role of Kevin Bacon. So many insane rabbit holes with connections to Nazi Germany and Hollywood actors. It's a wild ride that's sure to spark discussion.
IndyCar Announcer, Radio DJ and Music Afficianado Michael Young shares his encyclopedic vinyl knowledge, and discusses the interconnectedness we all have with music. Starting in Radio in 1987 at WIOT in Toledo Ohio, his journey has taken him on an amazing ride through music, broadcasting, and a lifetime of record collecting.
Listen through the end for the premiere of the new Vinyl Ventures Theme Song, by long-time friends of the show Bill Hayse, and Dolph Cheney!
Dean Metcalf began as an intern on the Bob & Tom Show in 1988. Since then, the show has gone from local phenomenon to national syndication. Dean shares some great stories about growing up in central Indiana and how vinyl, music and concerts shaped his persona, and career.
Part 2 - Seph Hatley grew up in the South, in North Carolina before ending up in Indiana. His family always listened to music and had a multi generational vinyl collection. Seph was the next one in line to inherit the collection. At first Seph didn't even have a turntable, then gradually the vinyl became a part of life again.
"These are my books, they speak to me." - Seph Hatley
