We all know the stories of the horror of trench warfare in the First World War. Waves of soldiers clambering out of their trenches into a hail of gunfire and nests of barbed wire strewn across no-man’s land. Artillery shells exploding all around them as they advanced while aeroplanes buzzed overhead firing machine guns down upon them. Often the enemy trench was only yards away yet in that time, hundreds if not thousands of men could be left dead or dying in the mud.

It was a man-made hell on Earth.
