"It was an absolute honor to have Mr. Matt Pryor from The Get Up Kids be a part of the podcast. I just noticed after listening back to this episode that the only person left to interview from my opening musical montage is Jeremy Enigk. What a trip it's been. Matt was great to chat with and even had to scold his kids who you can hear at times during the interview. We dove into the first time Matt sang live in front of someone, Kansas City, Boy's Life, ripping off "Static Prevails" and why bands do 10 year anniversaries. Matt also mentioned his opinion on the word "emo" and throughout the podcast you can hear his voice ring with truth that also transcends to the bands he was in and his way of life. Today, on the podcast, there is a massive announcement. This morning, I launched a book publishing company called Washed Up Books. After two volumes of Anthology of Emo, I really felt there was more to do in this space and because of your support, it’s time to make this a real thing.

I thought it would be fun to recap the releases of Anthology of Emo and how we got to doing Red Letter Days with the designer Jesse Reed. Jesse’s day job is Order, a design firm, Standards Manual book series, and in a fantastic band called Sharkswimmer, where he’s the drummer. It’ll make sense as you hear the episode. Jesse was invaluable to making these a reality, and we go into the story of how we started doing books and dive into books and music. 

This is overwhelming to have happened. It’s amazing to think someone like Matt Pryor, whom I idolized, has put pen to paper and written a fantastic series of stories that I have been waiting to tell you for so long.

Today on the podcast we welcome Colin McCann from Don Martin Three, Vulture Feather and Wilderness. Don Martin Three were from St Augustine Florida from the years 1993 to 1996. If you’re a fan of Moss Icon, Indian Summer and Policy Of 3. Screaming, quiet loud parts, and amazing guitar work, this is a band to listen to. We talk about that time and the bands from the 90s when the word didn’t mean much.

Today on the podcast we welcome Popeye Vogelsang from Farside, Your Favorite Trainwreck, and a new band he’s in called Calling Hours. Popeye is most well known for being a guitarist and vocalist of the band Farside, founded in Orange County, California in 1989 and released their records on Revelation Records. Today on the podcast are the members of Braid talking about their 25th Anniversary and tour for Frame & Canvas. I thought it’d be funny to interview them in order asking similar questions about the album, their feelings on resisting this record, the remixing of the album from J Robbins, and touring. What’s amazing is everyone gave different answers and memories. Plus, the secret gem of the episode is worth listening through the whole thing I promise you. I had each person describe the other band members in one word. The answers they give are insightful, sweet, and hilarious. First up is Todd Bell, then Bob Nanna, Chris Broach, then finishing up with Damon Atkinson. What’s amazing listening back to these interviews is how different everyone is but how they need a vote of 4 to decide anything as Braid. They’re back, ready to rock again. Lastly, please stay for Damon’s stories which had me laughing and a great set closer to the episodes. We hadn’t spoken before for the pod, so we had a little extra time to chat. Today on the podcast we welcome Melody Caudill. She’s the name behind Career Woman, that’s currently partnering with the fabulous Lauren Records. You may recognize the last name. Melody is the daughter of Jeff Caudill from Gameface and a new band called Low Coast.

All that to say, Melody recently released a song called “Patience (I Like You)” that blew me away. Jeff had been sending me her music since she began writing and I was always intrigued with how a rock star’s daughter could go down the same path when most often times they rebel and do something opposite.

I threw out the idea to chat with them together. Melody and I kicked Jeff out after about 20 minutes or so and got talk directly about her musical journey, writing process, her wants and dreams. For those listening, Melody is a freshman in college and way the hell ahead of how I was at her age and it was an absolute joy to hear her perspective on things in life and music. She even played Gilman Street in SF recently. Can’t get any cooler than that.

Today on the podcast, we welcome M.C. Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger and Ex-Ignota. They may have never crossed your path. That’s ok. Upon further inspection, a singer songwriter signed to Merge may bring more questions than answers. We met through a post I made on Instagram. I went, why does that name seem familiar. I reached out and after recognizing the name of his old band on Ebullition called Ex-Ignota, which were a hardcore band from the 90s in Goleta/Santa Barbara area. Fittingly, I took a drive up recently to see him perform in Santa Barbara and speak in person for the podcast. MC was insanely generous with his time and even shouted out the podcast to the crowd during the show.

You’ll hear about how M.C. had house shows that would make anyone yearn for a time machine and a love for the early days of emo that was super deep and I learned a ton from him about his position in the scene and where he is today and how it shaped him. His past may be in hardcore and emo with his pedal full on a now full time career as a musician as Hiss Golden Messenger, which we talk about at length. You can hear it in his songs, there’s a little hardcore in em and after this episode it’ll be even more clear.

Today on the podcast we welcome Vanessa Downing from Samuel or as they known now as Samuel SC. SC is for State College in Pennsylvania where they got together. Samuel was around for 2 years from 1993-1995 and released a split 7” with Texas is the Reason and releases with Art Monk and others. They’re this great moment in that era after the alternative boom and hardcore/emo intermixed. What’s amazing is the band members reconnected further during the pandemic and are back with a new album, touring upcoming and a realization that people cared about their old band. Today on the podcast we welcome David Knudson from Botch and Minus the Bear. I was so excited that David said yes to the podcast and we spoke recently after the first set of Botch reunion shows. We talk about being creative, Seattle in the 90s outside of grunge, and his battle with making better choices in life. Including a deep conversation on how alcohol can catch up with you and the lessons he learned from rehab but also his family. This new Botch tour and music wouldn’t have happened without love from his family and friends to see this other side. Today on the podcast we welcome Daniel Littleton from The Hated. Daniel has a whole other band called Ida and that’s a whole separate episode. Today, we just stick to The Hated, which has had their catalog meticulously handled by our friends at Numero Group and recently played some reunion shows. The Hated were an early emo band. Daniel goes to great lengths to explain his fascination and frustration with the word but in the end he weaves a tale that talks about his upbringing in a biracial family that shaped his life and also seeing bands like Bad Brains or women in music helped guide where he is today. Today on the podcast we welcome John Dugan from Chisel, which we talk extensively about and they’re about to do some reunion shows for Numero Group and reissues for some classic 90s that crossed over into many genres. One that I didn’t realize happened that I do a podcast about was emo. This band is really close to my heart too. I found this band through John’s younger brother Mike. I met Mike my freshman year on campus after someone on our hall said someone down the hall likes weird music too. The first record Mike played for me was Chisel. We became fast friends and ended up seeing Chisel in 1997 with Karate at a house show in Chapel Hill. Little did we know the band would dissolve soon after that show and that would be the end of it. Years later, I’ve spoken to John through his various musical endeavors or at family functions when I’d see the Dugans in Northern Virginia. Full circle moment and happy to have John on to talk about Chisel and his many musical band over the years. We touch on his experience with Revolution Summer, Amanda MacKaye recommending he buy an album that went on to change history, his time at the City Paper and the opportunities that Brough about and the post-Nirvana boom of labels trying to sign Chisel. We even talk Fall Out Boy and the renewed interest in Chisel.

Today on the podcast we welcome Chris Sheppard from Everyone Asked About You. If you’re not aware, this band was a late 90s gem of a band that I missed myself during this time. After finding out about them through some friends at Numero Group and talking to Chris, they intersected and overlapped with many of the bands of the time in their home of Little Rock Arkansas.

Chris and I talk a lot about where he’s from, seeing early emo bands, being in a band with a woman around that time, connecting with Ken Shipley from Tree Records who now runs Numero Group and the subsequent reunion shows and music being available again for the world. Plus we preview the upcoming Numero 20 showcase they’re playing in LA next month. Finally, we talk to Chris about his career now that I guarantee you will not want to miss.

I have to say, talking to bands I never knew then but connect with instantly continues to affirm my belief in this special time as a genre and as a music scene. This band I would have been obsessed with back in the day. Girl and guy vocals, super dissonant and great peaks and valleys. Heaven.

Today on the podcast, we welcome Erik Fisher from The Hated. The Hated were a 4 piece emo band from Annapolis Maryland who were active from 1985-1990. They are considered an early emo band and around the same time as many we know like Rites of Spring, Gray Matter, and Moss Icon. Thankfully, Numero Group has their music streaming and available. Now to the interview. For those that have been in college or had a really great teacher in high school perhaps. This is for you. That one class that you felt so engaged with someone and the flow back and forth on ideas kept on a path that enlightened both the student and the teacher. I let this one stay more open than usual because the flow of this with Erik, who is a professor by profession, is glorious to listen back on. If you haven’t had a class like this before, this is close to it. When the bell rings, you felt you could take on the world and a new appreciation for what you just learned. I learned so much talking to Erik about his perspective on emo, his band, and music and philosophy. My favorite part is when Erik talks about seeing Rites of Spring for the first time. Today we welcome Tim Kasher, again! He’s been on prior as a guest talking about his entire career and also was included in volume 2 of the Anthology of Emo book series, now we dive even deeper. This time we dive into the absolute classic “Domestica.” Released in June way back in 2000, this album released posthumously, really was an evolution of their last two records and started to almost restart the band out of chaos and unrest. The album, rumored to be about a divorce, as you will hear, is close but also far away as well. Tim was generous was his time to dive really deep into the album, cover, and every single track. Including some about Braces, a short lived band that was a 3 piece that you’ll hear on the reissue. Enough of me talking, this album is a shade over 30 minutes but we’ll spend the next hour to let Tim tell us all about “Domestica.” I hope you enjoy. Reissue is available via 15 Passenger.

Today we welcome Eva Alexiou-Reo, many of us know as Eva Fata. Today we welcome Josh English from the band Six going On Seven. Josh was raised in Portland Oregon, seasoned in Boston and an influence on many bands you love today. He should be on the tip of your tongue in this scene. Maybe after this interview the band and Josh will be. Their influence personally has stayed with me for years from their days on Some Records in the late 90s to "American’t (or Won’t)" on Big Wheel Recreation released back in 2001. The band shortly broke up and their CDs and 7”s I had have been staring back at me since. I honestly always had Josh on a list to interview and as this podcast creeps past its 200th episode and 10th year, it was an honor to speak to Josh about his life and what’s he got up next in his career.

Today we welcome a very special guest and friend, Adam Lazzara from Taking Back Sunday. It’s fitting he’s number 200. I met him early on in my days at college when I’d see him at shows all the time. He was in high school at the time and it was something where no matter the show, Adam was there. During the podcast, we catch up on live and I bring up one of the worst shows he’s ever played at a band that coincidentally led to him moving up to Long Island. As someone who was a fan of him before the band, it was this magical thing. Someone from around here in North Carolina is going to live in NYC? Wow! As the years past and releases, we’d spare a minute or a quick hello as life runs by. It’s fitting for 200 because we’re coming up on 10 years of the podcast and 14 years of washed up emo. Today, we welcome Johnathon Ford from Unwed Sailor and Roadside Monument. Johnathon and I have been trying to make this happen for years as we’d connect via mutual friends or at a show. Most recently in Brooklyn back before the pandemic we ended up talking for a long time after an Unwed Sailor show and it went places where you don’t expect a conversation to go and all the sudden you get a text or the bartender goes, “yea it’s closing time.” I wanted to do that again so I got Johnathon to come back on to talk about his music career from his early bands to Roadside Monument and his latest album “Truth or Consequences” that is out now on Spartan Records. As with any guests that got to take in the 80s, I was smitten with his stories of Seattle, Tulsa, and what laid the groundwork for his musical taste, ideals, but also where he is today. If you’ve never heard of either band, they are bedrocks for this scene and worth your time to dive into. Today we welcome Brian Sokel from Franklin and AM/FM. Franklin were a Philly area band from 1992-2000 that had releases and played with many of your favorite bands during that time. Brian was the guitarist of Franklin and put out a bunch of great music that runs the gamut from post to dub to low-fi indie. Their influences on music and culture run vast from Botch, Garden Variety, Blonde Redhead, Modest Mouse, Pg. 99, and many more. Today, we welcome guitarist and singer from Ryan Ferguson from the band No Knife. I had Mitch Wilson (the other half of the guitar vocals of No Knife) on episode 153 and today, we welcome in Ryan. We talk a lot about his music both solo and No Knife, the scene, and I sorta didn’t realize but I read a super low Pitchfork review of one of his solo albums that Ryan never knew they reviewed or read it. An absolute unique sound and their records never sound old to me whenever they come on… No Knife were one of the best bands ever to come out of San Diego and I’m so happy Ryan spent some time to chat about it

The show was Steven’s Untitled Rock Show on Fuse TV. A show I had the pleasure of working with during my day job at Equal Vision Records. Azure Ray is an American dream pop duo, consisting of musicians Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor. Formed in Athens, Georgia in 2001, they later moved to Omaha, Nebraska and became part of the Saddle Creek Records music scene, which also included Bright Eyes, The Faint, and Cursive.

They are an icon in this scene and it was absolutely fascinating to hear Tonie’s perspective on DIY and the music scene from his vantage point of being in this band from 1987-1991. We talk about how he met Jonathan Vance, finding punk and hardcore in the suburbs of DC, and the first time he heard the word emo. We also go deep into his relationship with the word and what he thinks now. Tonie was honest and someone I wish I could listen to for hours. Today, we welcome a legend, Conor Mullen Oberst to the podcast. No, I didn’t just add my last name to his name, that’s his actual middle name and we talk about it and no, we discussed it. We are not related. 

Mr Oberst was very gracious with his time while having some work done on his house, which you’ll hear at times during the podcast. It was an honor to discuss such life changing events as seeing Fugazi when he was 11 and the first time he heard the word emo at 16. We also chat about his feelings on the word emo and his association with it when his sound was traveling the opposite way. What I loved most about this interview was Conor’s openness. He was willing to discuss at length his history and what he’s trying to pass on as not just as a musician but as a human. We then spent time on Bright Eye’s legacy as the band turns 25 this year and what he thinks about himself and what the future holds.

Today on the podcast is Gared O’Donnell from Planes Mistaken for Stars. Gared and I recently connected after he heard an earlier podcast, episode 110 to be exact, with writer Jason Heller about the impact of Planes Mistaken for Stars and the untimely death of band member Matt Bellinger. Gared hadn’t heard this episode until recently and reached out to me after he listened. We ended up talking a bit and he agreed to come on the podcast. 

This episode now takes on a little extra weight. The interview, done in May of this year was before Gared was diagnosed in late August with stage 3 Esophagus cancer. As a favor, it’d be great while you’re listening to Gared’s interview to check out the link to his GoFundMe on Washed Up Emo. They’re still researching the best options for care but any words of support or some donation will go a long way for a legend. 

If you don’t know much about Planes Mistaken for Stars or a super fan, this episode is for you. Gared pulls no punches talking the band’s association with emo saying, “I think we wanted to lean into the dark side of things because it made more sense to us.” On their rowdy days, he admits. “It was a circus act, it wasn’t a magic show.” He talks fondly on his time with bandmate Matt saying, “Matt walks on stage with me, every time I do.” Lastly, he’s one of the most aware of his faults and dreams I’ve ever interviewed saying, “Sometimes life is just crushing, just to walk outside the door… if one our tunes can get you to roll up your sleeves and brave through it, then that’s all I want. Then stating eloquently “I’m hoping that on my deathbed, I’ll just remember that, I did it my way.”

Today on the podcast we welcome Thomas Barnett from Strike Anywhere. A legend in the punk scene and someone that I’ve been following since 1999 when I first heard Strike Anywhere and their brand of political punk from Richmond, VA. 

When Thomas from Strike Anywhere first jumped on the phone with me said he was shy and not really a good talker. Well, he was completely wrong and I just sat back for most of this interview and listened to the master who has been going to shows since the 80s. he talked about learning how to put on shows at a barn on the outskirts of Richmond Virginia, and spoke passionately about what first bands he saw that shaped his life and his previous band Inquisition. I did a lot of editing myself out, yes, even the giggles. It was funny thought listening back to this interview and going, “yea don’t need to hear me talk there.” 

I was absolutely honored to have someone like Thomas take time to chat about the history of the “scene” in quotes and what shapes the scene and yourself. We of course talk about emo, don’t worry, but as you know, my love of hardcore runs deep so to hear him talk about the Richmond, Virginia scene, his life now and the band Strike Anywhere is still around! Their most recent album is out on Pure Noise Records now called “Nightmares of the West.” Definitely go check that out and as we all know and you’ve heard me preach, emo has many tentacles and a long history. A big part of the history that isn’t talked about enough is hardcore and punk. Hardcore intersects with emo so much that having Thomas on to school me on the history was amazing to experience.

Not the longest career but to me, a cornerstone and trailblazer for the music we all love that followed. Alex Dunham, singer and guitarist for the band and I connected in NYC right before the pandemic took hold in early March. It's crazy to hear our conversation have zero of the weight of conversations happening with our friends and family today. A time capsule for what was before this insanity we’re all in now. It’s also the last time I did an interview in my apartment in NYC. I insanely miss doing interviews in person because there’s time to gauge an answer, a pause, the eye contact, and the laughs. I’m happy someone captured the moment of us at my shitty Ikea kitchen table. 

If there’s one thing to do during this podcast, its take a minute. I let Alex contemplate and take a breath a lot of the podcast. There’s so much to get to from Alex’s beginnings in Arizona, learning about punk, getting the fuck out of Arizona and heading to Washington DC, getting signed to Dischord, and a story about Fugazi staying at his grandmother’s house. We also talk about what he’s doing now with his custom furniture company Brokenpress Design. Hoover should be mentioned daily when talking about post hardcore and the early 90s. Today, we welcome Danny Pound from Vitreous Humor and The Regrets. In this podcast, I’ve tried to go back and find the origin, the meaning, and the stories behind this genre. In this episode, we go back to the start with Danny Pound. Danny’s band Vitreous Humor in the late 80s was the first band signed to Crank! Records and also their first release in 1994. Along with Boys Life, they were some of the first bands from this label out of the gate for a time that was hugely influential to me. The band broke up before I had a chance to see them and along with The Regrets, bucked the trend of what was supposed to be emo, thoughts around it and one of the true pioneers in this scene. When I look back on my life and what albums had an immediate impact on me from the 90s, one jumps out that I felt never got their due. The band was M.I.J and the singer of that band, Jeff Hanson. Jeff tragically died in 2009 and left a wealth of material from three solo albums on Kill Rock Stars to an album and EP on the legendary Caulfield Records. I wanted to find a couple of folks to talk about Jeff and his life, stories, and legacy. Speaking about Jeff in this episode is Bob Nanna from Braid, Hey Mercedes, and many other bands, plus Bernie McGinn who put out the full length, “The Radio Goodnight” and an EP. They speak eloquently about Jeff and you’ll find out more about music but also his humor.

Today, we welcome Whitmer Thomas. You’re saying, who is Whitmer? Whitmer is a comedian that recently had a 1-hour comedy special on HBO called The Golden One. 

It’s also an album of music with the same name that you can listen to on our favorite DSP. Whit was a musician before a comedian and has quite the extensive knowledge of punk, hardcore, and emo from his days playing in emo and screamo bands. To that, Whitmer jokes throughout his HBO special about bands we all know and love. You should search it out, as there isn’t a more specific comedy special for our crowd. Whitmer was a joy to talk to and we had a blast talking about his inspirations, his late mom’s band, and being creative in both music and comedy.

Today, we welcome a legend. Guy Picciotto from Rites of Spring and Fugazi. You may also know him from Happy Go Licky or One Last Wish. Insert another obscure band to tweet at me later. 

In my years of doing this podcast, I never expected to have such legends of the genre. I’m glad I waited because Guy speaks about his feelings about the word emo and how it’s changed over the years. Really eye opening and wasn’t expecting him to expound on that as much as he did. Definitely stick around for that. 

Rites of Spring were only around for a couple years but still are mentioned when referring to this genre. As the word morphs and changes, Rites of Spring are the big bang of emo worth mentioning to this day. 

Guy was so eloquent and thoughtful in his responses and since we did the interview at my day job, Atlantic Records. We start the podcast discussing Fugazi’s experience back in the day when they were being courted by Atlantic.

Today we welcome singer, guitarist and lyricist, Scott Hobart from Giants Chair. Giants Chair are a midwest band that in the early 90s influenced many in the scene we know today. Today we welcome Jamie Stillman from EarthQuaker Devices, an effects pedal company out of Akron, Ohio. Jamie was also in bands you may have heard of like The Party of Helicopters, Fringe Candidate, Relaxer (his current band,) and my favorite, Harriet the Spy. Harriet the Spy was a band out of Kent, Ohio that was around from 1993-1998 and was an actual screamo band. They were one of the first screamo bands I ever heard when I started getting into all of this stuff. Also from 1993 to 2002, Jamie ran Donut Friends Records and put out a ton of punk, metal, and shoegaze acts. What’s even more fascinating than his band/label stories, or his time as a tour manager that you’ll hear about, is how Jamie started an effects pedal company. It’s a testament to pursuing what you love leads to your work.

Jade and I connected early on during the first album, "Real Stories Of True People Who Looked Kind Of Like Monsters." I was a huge fan and supporter. Following that debut, it was great to see the mainstream press take a liking to him after the amazing follow-up, "The Yunahon Mixtape." Now the album coming out August 16th, "Basking in the Glow," should propel him to another level. It’s that good. On the podcast, Jade and I discuss his early music life getting heckled, the new album, and there’s a good portion about the NBA, which we’re both huge fans of.

A few months ago, I asked a couple of prior podcast guests Brian Lowit from Lovitt Records and now Dischord Records and John Davis from Q and Not U, if they thought an in-person interview could happen. Through their help and a little timing of a personal wedding in DC set this plan in motion. 

As this podcast gets into its 8th year with no signs of slowing down, I thought it was time to have the person partly responsible for why I first got into straightedge, punk, hardcore, and the DIY ethos I continue to carry through during my day job in the music industry at large. 

Ian couldn’t have been more gracious and after some back and forth and a nice Delta airlines agent, I was there with enough time to do the interview and make the wedding later that day. 

I never expected to have the opportunity to talk to one of my heroes in this setting and for Ian to spent a couple of hours showing me around the Dischord house, the archives and then an interview will be remembered forever.

Today we welcome John Vanderslice. I found out about John through his album in 2000 called, Mass Suicide Occult Figurines, on Barsuk Records. It stuck with me and I’ve followed him since. Last month, he released his latest album “The Cedars” on Native Cat Recordings. He’s on tour with Pedro the Lion and worth a listen if you’ve never dived into the mind of Vanderslice. 

We talk about how he started late in music, how creating music takes some narcissism to survive, about the loss of life, and the depression that he’s been dealing with, including how this album saved his life. Plus, we dive into a discussion about having fame and critical acclaim early on in your career and what that does to you during and after. This is probably one of the more emotional as John opened up about his struggles with dependency on drugs and the battle he has every day with life, creating art, and keeping his recording studios, Tiny Telephone, afloat. Many of your favorite albums have been recorded there like ones from Death Cab for Cutie, Sleater-Kinney, Deerhoof, The Mountain Goats, The Magnetic Fields, and Spoon.

A documentary was released a few years ago called "Don’t Break Down," about Jawbreaker. Fun fact: Dan Didier, drummer for the Promise Ring, Maritime and Vermont was the producer of the film! 

After seeing a screening of the film, I was fascinated at how much footage they had of Jawbreaker. I found out later from Dan that Adam was the one that has been saving everything. When I approached Adam to do the podcast a couple of years ago, Adam said we would need to wait as they were just about to announce all of the reunion shows. 

Recently in Brooklyn, Adam and I finally sat down to talk. We discuss where these archival/documentation thoughts started in his life and how the video store that he owned for years was feeding that same itch. 

We also discuss what it’s like being in Jawbreaker now and not being as neurotic about taking photos or saving the flyers. In the same light, Adam is fully realizing how important these things are later and the love for his band is how everyone should think about their own band’s legacy, big or small. 

Bonus, we talk about emo and how Adam didn’t hear them being called emo until after they broke up. Finally, a couple of rad Nirvana stories about Adam seeing them for the first time and knowing the first single was going to be “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Wow, we made it to 150 episodes. Crazy to think about all the folks that have come on to share their story with you and I. To that, a big part of this is agreeing to be open and talk about their music. American Football gets the gold star. 

Before the reunions, in January 2014, Mike was on the podcast for the first time chatting about his career. 

For LP2, I had everyone in American Football individually to discuss reuniting and what it was like to write together again.

This time, I got Mike and Nate together in a room in NYC to discuss every single song in detail on LP3. We go from beginning to end on the writing process, the disagreements, sequencing, and why they made certain decisions for every song. 

Mike also recommends some bands I’ve never heard before and Nate reads an email he sent to the band passionately discussing why he feels his track listing order is the way it should go.

David Bazan has always been on my list to be on the podcast, it just took almost 8 years. I always sorta thought he’d want nothing to do with me or the podcast. As with this stuff, I got over it and just asked. It worked and fittingly, David has also resurrected Pedro the Lion, with the first album under that name in 15 years. The album “Phoenix” out on Polyvinyl Records, is an amazing return. David and I speak about his religious upbringing, lots of Fugazi and we talk a lot about what music does to us when we close our eyes. Specifically that journey that music takes us on and what story you end up telling in the end. I think you’ll enjoy and I was nervous for a lot of this. I don’t know why, just meant a lot I guess.

I first heard Starmarket on the 3rd Emo Diaries compilation in 1999 and soon after they released their third album “Four Hours Light.” I was instantly blown away with the post-hardcore sound and the next level indie rock/emo sensibility. I never met these guys back in the day and with some reunion shows recently in Japan and their home country of Sweden, I slide into the DMs on Instagram to see if they’d be up to chatting about their band. Fredrik, the lead singer and guitar player, was more than happy to chat.

Today we welcome Steve Schiltz from Longwave. Steve is also an accomplished music producer and composer for film, TV and advertising. If you’re wondering why Steve is on. I have three reasons.

First, when I moved to NYC, the Brooklyn thing was about to blow up and I was working at a label nearby a lot of these venues in the city where bands like the Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and others cut their teeth. Longwave were active around the same time as well and I loved them.

Second, I was and still am, obsessed with shoe gaze. The similarities to the long droning emo songs that I also can’t stop emulating is directly related to my love of shoe gaze. I’d happily quit my job and join a shoe gaze band tomorrow. Hit me up.

Third, I find out a half hour in that a past band Steve was in, Scout, toured with Sunny Day Real Estate! He waited 30 minutes to tell me that. Steve has a very funny story about Jeremy Enigk you’ll want to listen for.

To be honest, this one is sorta for me. Over the years, Steve and I have crossed paths through friends and music here in NYC. I knowwww… It’s not emo, it’s not hardcore but Steve’s music is fucking beautiful and Longwave’s shoe gaze is what I’d want to sound like if I ever picked up my guitar again.

Why should you listen? Steve weaves a rad story about early NYC, the boom of 2000s Brooklyn and the lasting effects of that era that still resonates today.

We’re back and stoked to have episode 145 of the podcast with Hutch Harris, most widely know from the band, The Thermals. Hutch and I have been conversing back and forth on Twitter for years. I’d always loved his take on music, especially the punk and hardcore references. As a fan of his band, The Thermals, I was bummed when not long ago they called it quits. Today welcome Erik Ratensperger from the legendary screamo band Jeromes Dream.

Jeromes Dream were around for a very short time from 1997 to 2001 born out of the Connecticut hardcore scene. They had a unique way of playing by way of the singer Jeff Smith refusing to use a microphone for shows. Also, the band was known for playing very short sets, usually no longer than 10 minutes. Pretty unique. These guys are right along side Pg.99, Orchid, Saetia in the early screamo era. If you’re unaware, it’s well worth a dive into their career. Lauren and I connected a few years ago and I found out she listened to the podcast! The stars aligned and we finally caught up recently to chat. 

Lauren is a massive emo fan and we chat deeply about her early days playing drums in bands around Glasgow, Scotland that helped shape who she is today. She was in a couple killer bands before this including Boyfriend/Girlfriend and Blue Sky Archives. The band is celebrating 20 years of The Moon My Saddle with a few select shows and it was time to get David on. This podcast episode is a lot about redemption and letting things go as times pass. One of those is an amazing quote on The Moon My Saddle when it first came out in Alternative Press. It says “David Moore on this record makes Huey Lewis sound like the king of the Delta Blues.” Then, 10 years later, Alternative Press does a big feature/interview on the band. Some things are ahead of their time. David’s father drove his motorcycle across the United States to Los Angeles, California to try and make it as an actor. It never materialized and he came back to Indiana to raise his family. David also made that same decision after Chamberlain broke up, deciding to hang up the music and stop chasing the dream and get on with his life. It wasn’t entirely that simple as you’ll hear. We talk about David’s approach to music, the initial response to “The Moon My Saddle,” the band’s downfall and what David did after that. Also how he’s looking at the upcoming 20 year anniversary shows from that album as an adult versus the boy that first toured those songs. “If this was just about nostalgia, we are self-aware enough to know that we wouldn’t want to do it.” Not a bad way to think about it.

Today we welcome Chris Popadak from Hawthorne Heights. Chris has been drumming with the band as a touring and session member since 2014 and joined fully last year. We connected because we’ve definitely used Hawthorne Heights as an example of when emo goes wrong and Chris wanted to set the story straight…. When we spoke over email he mentioned that he was into a bunch of the older stuff, the band knew they weren’t emo and to let me know they are still a band! Plus they haven’t stopped being a band, releasing a bunch of music independently, since the emo boom in the mid-00s. Their latest is on Pure Noise Records. Chris or “Poppy” as many call him that know him well, was a great guest and spoke honestly about being a musician with a band with one big song and how far that can take you and what doors it can open. He’s living the dream. Coincidentally, he is from Ohio.

Today we welcome Anthony Green from Circa Survive, Saosin and the Sound of Animals Fighting. My history with Anthony goes back to the early days of Circa Survive and working alongside him at Equal Vision Records for the Juturna and On Letting Go album releases. As the years passed, we stayed in touch and would see each other as you do when a band rolls through town. Anthony was always super into what I was doing with Washed Up Emo and check in when I’d post something about The Promise Ring or Braid. Anthony came along at an amazing time for punk rock and rode the wave with Circa Survive to heights not afforded many and still can play anywhere in the world for his solo material or with Circa Survive. In the hour we chatted, we got to catch up in thoughts on emo, sneaking up on stage to ask Thursday, who he didn’t know, about joining a certain band. Plus, how I forced Circa Survive to do a Fuse TV event for a girl that really just wanted Panic! at the Disco and where he is now and what he would have said to himself 10 years ago.

If you were around in the 90s and had a live video of a band like Braid or Michigan Fest or picked up a VHS of Actuality of Thought, BiFocal were the ones that did it. Charles has gone on to do a lot of amazing things from those early days of filming some of the best bands in the mid to late 90s. 

 I bought their VHS tape of Actuality of Thought, which was live songs from amazing bands like Braid, Sleepytime Trio, Jejune, The Get Up Kids, The Promise Ring to name a few. Look it up on YouTube if you want to understand what we’ll be talking about. We also talk about filming an entire Krazy Fest and how it may never see the light of day. 

 In the early days, those that had cameras documented a lot of beautiful things that we take for granted with our smartphones. Charles and BiFocal Media did an amazing job of documenting a time period and understanding that this was something needed by bands and the scene.

Arty was in bands like Bad Trip, Mind Over Matter, World’s Fastest Car, Errortype: 11, Gay for Johnny Depp, Instruction, God Fires Man and Unwed. He’s been running a metal bar/venue called Saint Vitus, in Greenpoint Brooklyn that’s held some legendary shows since opening in 2011. He’s still playing music with a band called Primitive Weapons because obviously, he’s not giving up on the dream. Arty has seen a lot in music and with no punches pulled, tells it how it is. I met John Frazier in college when he was working at Tooth and Nail/Solid State Records. We’d nerd out about bands and stayed in touch over the years. Now, he runs an amazing label called Spartan Records. Go support, listen, buy something from the label if you get a chance. Great person and a great friend. Just a few weeks ago, he sends me this Mineral interview out of the blue. I am blown away by it. He told me in a subsequent email that it was a Mineral interview he did 20 years ago while they were on tour with Jimmy Eat World and Sense Field at Twisters in Richmond, Virginia on March 1st, 1997. John was street teaming for Crank! Records at the time and was program director for James Madison University’s radio station WXJM. He was doing the interview for a zine he made for the radio station. The street team participation John did led him to the job at Crank! which started him on his career. The interview is with Chris and Gabe in their van. While John was doing it, Jimmy Eat World was in the middle of their set. Fun things to note for timing, the band had released “The Power of Failing” as was at work on “EndSerending” with the producer Mark Trombino. It’s candid, so I left everything in there.  At around 5:35 into the interview, they’re approached by a parking enforcement guy who claims they didn’t pay to park and they go back and forth over the $3 parking fee. Later on in the interview, they recount the whole story to someone else.  If there’s any charm or insight into the BS of touring life, that’s it. Little known fact, he was a band called The Blue Ontario with members of Christie Front Drive around then too. He was also very good friends with Matt Bellinger, a member of Planes Mistaken for Stars who recently lost his life. Jason wrote a beautiful piece for the local paper Westword and I thought it would be great to have him on to talk about Denver in the 90s and his memories of Matt. Even if you didn’t know Matt, it’s worth hearing Jason talk about the time period. He speaks with great detail and I found the information so fascinating, I cut myself heavily from the episode. Fitting for episode 101, we go back to school with one of the forefathers of emo and welcome Seth Nanaa from Indian Summer. Indian Summer were around less than a year in the early 90s but spawned many after them with their experimentation and not to be missed live show. Seth has gone on to live a very full life and still to this day, holding onto the ideals of music being something you do for love, not money. Today we welcome Brett Detar from The Juliana Theory. The band recently announced a reunion tour so it was time to get Brett to talk with us on the podcast. Little did I know but Brett and I were both at a Sunny Day Real Estate show NYC back in 2000 and he noticed my Washed Up Emo shirt at SDRE’s reunion in 2009 as well. After my mind was blown with those two facts, Brett and I talked about his past including obsession with Fugazi, his history with Zao and what happened at The Juliana Theory’s first practice. Along the way and more than most guests, Brett was brutally honest with what went wrong with their career. It was really refreshing to have someone just lay out all their cards like that. In the end, the band followed their own muse and caught a ton of heat for it and in my opinion, just a little bit ahead of their time.

Jay booked the El 'N' Gee club in Connecticut from 1991-2001 and was one of the first to jump on the emo boom by booking The Get Up Kids, Saves the Day early on and even Brand New’s first show in CT. Jay then transitioned to Hot Topic in 2001 as the music buyer. Simply, if you bought music in Hot Topic from 01 to 2012, he was responsible. Jay talks about the changes Hot Topic had to make over the years, how he learned from his own mistakes and when he knew it was time to leave the company. Episode 94, A Tribute to Jon Bunch. To give some context, last year at this time, episode 57 of the podcast with Jon Bunch was to my knowledge the last interview Jon did. It was incredibly sad but also a place for people to learn about Jon forever. I was so honored to have spoken to him and be able to share his story. Last March there was a benefit show in Santa Ana California for Jon’s son Jack. It had an amazing line up of bands and people traveled from all over the world for the show. I had the pleasure of being in southern California for the event and saw first hand the community that came out for Jon. Seizing the moment, a friend of Washed Up Emo, Ed Curley, took it upon himself to interview people in the crowd. From fans, bands and those involved in the event, Ed took time to ask about Jon, the event and what it meant. You’ll hear many common themes and many kind words said about Jon. I tend to protect the word emo online to a fault. A few months back a site called Polygraph run by Matthew Daniels released a data visualization of what punk bands were considered punk, post, screamo, etc. Based on Spotify playlists. The emo category consisted of mostly mid 00s era stuff with some alt rock, etc. Just way off. It went like this. I tweeted at him angrily. He wrote back nicely. We talked on the phone, then he came to my apt to talk me off the ledge. While you’re listening check out Polygraph (poly-graph.co). This was an insanely interesting conversation about data. I promise you’re learn something about music and habits we all have now with access to everything at any moment.

I will never forget that the first thing Jon did when he picked up the phone for the podcast. He asked about my life and took the time to find out more about Washed Up Emo before the interview even started. I was blown away at how humble he was but also so proud of his life's work. It’s an honor to be able to present a small slice of Jon that many of his friends and family know so well. I count myself included. This podcast is supposed to be evergreen. You can listen in 5 years or in 10 years and know a good chunk of that band or era and some context to the scene and a way to look back but also look ahead. Jon was that last point to a T. He was so happy talking about the history but also his new music and what was next. Sadly, this was the last interview Jon did. I can only hope those close or those who have no idea who Jon Bunch was take and learn something from one of the most important voices in not only the independent scene but music in general. I am eternally grateful Jon took the time to talk with me about his life that will thankfully live on in aural form so someone can stumble upon Jon's music forever.

I saw a tweet from Frank Turner not long ago about nu metal. It struck a chord, albeit one in Drop C tuning. When Frank arrived in NYC promoting his recent “Positive Songs for Negative People” album we sat down for a few minutes chatting about a music past we both share.

Refused left us in 1998 to never return, though in 2012 they came back for a victory lap. Thankfully the band wanted to continue making music. A new album is here in 2015 and the world is better for it. Geoff Farina of Karate’s first response to my request to be on the podcast wasn’t the best. Truth be told, he’s not a fan of his music from the late 90s. Ha, what a place to start. Years ago I had done Karate’s first interview ever for my high school zine and had completely ridiculous questions then for a 16 year old so at 36 I’d hope to be a bit better. Geoff couldn’t have been more pleasant and comfortable with himself, his music and life. Maybe it’s age or wisdom or just something someone have in themselves but I felt each moment I was learning something from the discussion. Through Geoff’s days in DC, his thoughts on emo, conserving music for future generations with his uncle and his new band Exit Verse, it was a pleasure to chat with Geoff. Growing up a punk and metal fan in San Francisco doesn't seem like a fit for the podcast. But Sergie cut a different line through music to be a part of Samiam, one of the most revered bands on the west coast. I caught up with Sergie after the Knapsack reunion tour where we spoke about the 80s thrash scene happening in LA, his time with Solea and touring with Texas is the Reason plus what it meant to tour with Knapsack to such great audiences. Hey, we are now part of it. One of the most requested guests, Travis Shettel from Piebald, sat down with me a few months back to chat about the band's history. Frank Turner couldn’t wait to talk as he bounded to the back of the tour bus before his New York City gig at Terminal 5 late last year. When settled, he proclaimed that he never gets to talk about emo in any interview. Good start to say the least. After a full tour and pushing his latest album “Tape Deck Heart,” he relaxed instantly and in turn we had a great conversation. We spoke about his time with Kneejerk and Million Dead, his upbringing in the UK and how he found out about emo and hardcore plus Mineral’s influence and his favorite emo band I Hate Myself. Needless to say, we got along.

Recently, I got together with Mike Kinsella for the podcast who in these circles needs no introduction. Alas, for those unaware, he has been a part of some of the most revered bands in the scene from the last 90s through today. His work with Cap'n Jazz, American Football, Owls, Owen and Their / They're / There and Joan of Arc has influenced countless individuals and bands to pursue music. We talk about his upbringing, using maps while touring Europe, an upcoming American Football release, renaming "Never Meant" so it's funnier when someone yells it out at an Owen show and of course, the future. One thing is for sure, there is plenty of music left in Mr. Kinsella.

After meeting Eric Richter from Christie Front Drive through a friend in the early 2000s, I got to ask all the questions I had pent up since high school about the early days of Christie Front Drive touring and connecting with the likes of Mineral, Boys Life and Jimmy Eat World. I was always intrigued about that connection with Jimmy Eat World and after interviewing Jim Adkins for the podcast, I couldn't wait to get them both in a room. Schedules aligned this year and almost instinctively I stepped out of the way on this one. No need for questions when two friends get in the room. In this episode, you will hear Eric and Jim discuss how they did their first 7" together, the Capitol Records years for Jimmy Eat World and plenty of stories from the road. To be able to put this together and hear Eric and Jim wax poetic on the early days of their bands was a dream come true and a first for the podcast.

On this episode, I chat with Knapsack drummer Colby Mancasola about the origins of the band, working with Mark Trombino, never having a website and hearing the “next big thing” thrown around in a post-Nirvana world. Plus, find out what the famous record executive Jimmy Iovine said to Knapsack after a showcase in Los Angeles. It’s exactly what you think he would say. It was great to hear their story told and to learn how many bands that we know and love all intersected at one point on tour or in conversation with Knapsack. A true connector in the scene before social media and a 4 inch screen took over our lives.

Saves the Day, at it since 1997, has had their share of ups and downs but through it all they struck a chord with fans and still do to this day. I had the pleasure of having Saves the Day be my one and only band I ever booked. Sold out pizza restaurant in the middle of North Carolina after only booking one boysetsfire show. Take that Facebook Events. Also, vivid memories of worn out cassette tapes of "Can't Slow Down" and "Through Being Cool" that are still so near and dear to my heart. Chris was gracious enough to sit down with WashedUpEmo.com prior to their latest headlining tour in support of the new self-titled album. We spoke about Saves the Day's first show, the term "Emo Rock Stars," meanings behind the song "Shoulder to The Wheel," who designed one of their classic album covers and Chris' favorite Sean McGrath memory. Listening back, it's great to see how happy Chris is at this point in his life and how much he is enjoying the ride.

It was an absolute honor to have Mr. Matt Pryor from The Get Up Kids be a part of the podcast. I just noticed after listening back to this episode that the only person left to interview from my opening musical montage is Jeremy Enigk. What a trip it's been. Matt was great to chat with and even had to scold his kids who you can hear at times during the interview. We dove into the first time Matt sang live in front of someone, Kansas City, Boy's Life, ripping off "Static Prevails" and why bands do 10 year anniversaries. Matt also mentioned his opinion on the word "emo" and throughout the podcast you can hear his voice ring with truth that also transcends to the bands he was in and his way of life. The first day I started this podcast, a goal was to have Chris Simpson on. Through a great network of friends, it went down earlier this month and I couldn't have been happier. We had a few technical difficulties but we got to catch up on a bunch of things including the new crop of labels like Count Your Lucky Stars, The Gloria Record possibly reuniting and the amount of unreleased music that could see the light of day.
