Today, feral animals—unmanaged populations of non-native species—include the feral cat, rabbit, fox, camel, horse, pig, and water buffalo. These animals have had a profound impact on native flora and fauna, often outcompeting or preying upon endemic species and causing widespread environmental degradation. The introduction of rabbits in the 1850s, for instance, led to widespread grazing competition, harming native vegetation and leading to erosion, while feral cats are now infamous for their toll on native birds and small mammals.
