Nick LS Whelan has somehow gone unpunished for his litany of book crimes. His works include such unwholesome publications as Sanctimonious Slimes Versus Expired Epicures, Miscreated Creatures, and Deadly Dungeons. This rampage of mangled word wrangling will never stop until someone has the courage to take away his keyboard. When not doing words badly, he can usually be found washing dishes, advocating for weeds, building unnavigable websites, or failing to understand jokes. Most of his work can be found on PapersPencils.com.
I have been following Nick's work for a long while and I've learned a lot from him. His site Papers and Pencils has so many essential articles and has had a huge influence on my game design. I can honestly say the magic systems I create wouldn't be the same if where not for the "Magic Words" articles he wrote. And one of my favorite podcasts of all time was created by Nick himself: Blogs on Tape. And it's exactly what the title says. The podcast was simply the best RPG blog posts out there read aloud for you! Excellent!
In this chat we talked a lot about all of this, his journey through the RPG sphere, how we were like passing ships in the night the RPG spaces, weird games he played, and a lot more.
We also got deep and personal, talking about childhood, mental health, creative process, what is weird for him, how he always felt like the odd one out, how he sometimes prefer not to look too much into who made the pieces of art he appreciates, how he has issues with authority, how unique RPGs are intrinsically, and so much more.
