Welcome to The Westside Fairytales Podcast
Demons, desperate souls, and eldritch horrors…
We at the Westside Fairytales have written a story for you. Not you in that broad sense where you just means anybody, but you, Dear Listener. We know all about you. What makes you nervous, what sickens you, what keeps you from leaving your house sometimes for the maddening worry of it. And we’ve put it in a story. A story we’ll read for you.
These strange and varied original tales will linger long after you’ve finished listening.
The Westside Fairytales horror and dark fiction podcast is an award-winning audiodrama written, read, and produced by author Tyler Bell. New episodes are released every month and can be found at westsidefairytales.com, or wherever you listen to podcasts.
The first 4 seasons are comprised of a variety of short stories. Seasons 5 and 6 each are a season-long novel broken into episodic chapters. While each story can stand on its own, all content takes place in the extended Westside Fairytales universe, with continuing themes, characters, and connections.
The Horror and Lit Club episodes are discussions, interviews, and reviews that are separate from the regular fiction episodes.

Months after a local teen was lynched in the dead of a hot summer night, two men stand charged with murder in what the majority opinion considers to be an open-and-shut case. But Adelaide Stephenson, a young crime reporter from Charleston, is finding out the smallest cracks in the official narrative run far, far deeper than she could have ever expected.
Join Adelaide in West By God as she navigates small-town secrets, the dubious ethics of her own profession, and the dark whispers of an ancient creature — known to some as the Witchum Woman — who prowls the shadowed hollers that lie between night and nightmare.
Sent on overnight assignment to cover the start of the trial, Adelaide quickly realizes the story she’s been told — and been telling — doesn’t make sense. Cryptic assertions of a concrete alibi are emailed to her by the family of the accused, nobody in town seems comfortable discussing the basic facts of the case, and the murder she’s been writing about wasn’t the only tragic death this summer. Adelaide extends her stay against the wishes of her editor, and her investigations take a complicated and dangerous turn as she discovers the true depths of the mysteries surrounding Targrady. The only real evidence from the night of the murder may lie in the hands of a notorious local crime family led by an enigmatic woman known as the Fetid Queen, local authorities seem to grow more hostile by the hour, and even Adelaide’s own career might not survive this assignment.
Featuring an eclectic cast of characters ranging from violent and horrifying to outlandish and fabulous, West By God is a must-read novel for anybody who enjoys Twin Peaks, Stephen King, and all the creepy places you find just off the path in the woods. It is the debut novel of Tyler Bell: A USMC infantry combat veteran, former crime and courts reporter for the Charleston Daily Mail, and creator of the award-winning Westside Fairytales Horror and Dark Fiction Podcast.
Due for release by The Henlo Press in October of 2023.

On this episode of the Westside Fairytales Horror and Lit Club, host Tyler Bell sits down with Nic Boone, a horror creator and artist who's worked on numerous video games, including League of Legends. They're very well read on the social and economic issues facing artists these days, and we talk horror, their work, and the threats facing working artists in the modern market. We talk at length about AI, workers rights, and the grim future of art if the people who make it don't learn to band together and stick up for themselves.
If you're the politically weary sort, or get upset when you hear non-status-quo opinions about politics, economics, etc., this episode may not be for you. These are issues I'm very passionate about and that have deep and profound effects on folks like me being able to make art and hold onto the fruits of my labor. So, if you could give it a listen with an open mind, even if you disagree, I'd appreciate that!
Side note: Nic goes by they/them pronouns and I accidentally misgender them a few times in this episode. That's wrong on my part and all apologies to Nic.

In chapter 12 of the Westside Fairytales horror and dark fiction podcast’s story Sin Carriers, Su wakes up the morning after the events of the Ball, tired but none the worse for wear. Her debt paid to Moira, she leaves, not knowing somebody else aboard the train is waiting to collect. Mr. Vaught takes stock of the increasing damage to the train and tells the security crew to be ready to stop again shortly. Tolliver awakes a different man than the one he was before departing, but can’t quite hold himself together. Wickless loses face after terribly misjudging a situation, and Gato teaches a new Imago just where he stands in the pecking order.

On this episode of the Westside Fairytales horror and dark fiction podcast’s Horror and Lit Club, Tyler does a massive review of "The Black Phone," starring Ethan Hawke. In chapter 3 of the Westside Fairytales horror and dark fiction podcast’s story Sin Carriers, a team of misfits embarks safely, heading east. With nothing but time on their hands, our disparate cast makes their introductions, both to us, and to each other. Herself.

In this episode of the Westside Fairytales podcast’s Horror and Lit Club, Tyler rambles at length about home repairs, "Castlevania," the new pride flag, and he delivers a roughly two-hour-long script revision of the new "Conjuring" movie from James Wan, "The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It."
I say that "The Conjuring" is a Blumhouse feature a bunch of times during this, which is incorrect, but it's so like a Blumhouse movie I decided to forgive myself.
The script doctor is the last two hours or so of the episode, so skip ahead if you just want to hear that.

In chapter 18 of the Westside Fairytales horror and dark fiction podcast’s story Scars in Time, Ash has proven to herself beyond a shadow of a doubt that anywhere she exists, if Mike’s there, she can — and will — kill him. He’s no longer a stain on her heart, but there are other problems.
She’s trapped in Ashley Colon’s version of reality with no way out, and even if she had one, it wouldn’t fix what was wrong with Gun Cotton. With little else in the way of options, she reaches out to the one person she knows might be able to help.

In chapter 17 of the Westside Fairytales horror and dark fiction podcast’s story Scars in Time, it’s clear that the events Ash’s presence in Gun Cotton has set into motion haven’t been slowed in the least by her return to her own time. After a lifetime of letting herself be slowed, sidelined, and stalled, she’s ready to break through into the shadowed history of her house’s basement.
What she finds on the other side of the rough wall will be the beginning of the end of the life she’s known for thirty years. But knowing she has to face it, and wanting to, will make all the difference.

In chapter 16 of the Westside Fairytales horror and dark fiction podcast’s story Scars in Time, Ash’s desperate gambit in the Doctor’s hidden clinic has paid off, returning her home as though from a dream. Faced with the revelations of the clinic, many questions have been answered, but still more remain.
Ash finds that Gun Cotton has taken a turn for the worse while she’s been gone. If she was really gone at all.
In any case, it’s readily apparent that her work isn’t yet done, and this moment of happiness might be little more than a brief reprieve.

In chapter 15 of the Westside Fairytales horror and dark fiction podcast’s story Scars in Time, the Doctor’s threats, and his condition, make it all too clear that Ash’s time in the Starling household is rapidly coming to a close. Doped on morphine and left to fend for herself, she’s swept up into the arms of a girl with the same name as long ago student Coraline. And bearing the same ethereal glow as her golden ghost.
With the clock set against her, Ash will be forced to delve into the house’s most awful secrets, or risk becoming one of them.

In chapter 14 of the Westside Fairytales horror and dark fiction podcast’s story Scars in Time, Ash realizes she’s stuck in this iteration of the house once she fails to find the garret she’s been looking for. Gone too is the typewriter, though she can still hear it faintly throughout the house.
She adapts to her new job as a maid while trying to figure out a way home, the meaning behind that other her's urging to “Find the Medusa. Find the Artist.” It’s painfully clear, however, that the Doctor’s own tenuous grip on sanity is rapidly slipping, and she might run out of time before she can find the answers she needs.

In this episode of the Westside Fairytales horror and dark fiction podcast's Horror and Lit Club, Tyler talks about Greg McLean's "The Darkness," possibly the most stultifyingly boring movie he's ever seen, plans for upcoming format changes to various parts of the podcast, and a recommendation for the Little Nightmares video game by Tarsier Studios. In chapter 12 of the Westside Fairytales horror and dark fiction podcast’s story Scars in Time, there is no separating Ash from her visions now, and she doesn’t know if what she’s experiencing are visions at all. Seemingly thrust out of her own life and into one she’d rather die — rather kill — than live, she finds her headspace filled with memories of an existence that shouldn’t feel as familiar as it does.
Desperate for a way out, but bedridden from smoke inhalation, Ash is forced to use every last ounce of wit to escape this new and horrific predicament.

In chapter 11 of the Westside Fairytales horror and dark fiction podcast’s story Scars in Time, the lines around Ash’s reality blur in full as she finishes Morgan’s story. The cruel, beautiful ghost haunting her seems as made of flesh as Darcy.

In chapter 10 of the Westside Fairytales horror and dark fiction podcast’s story Scars in Time, Ash dives fully into the story of Jacob Morgan, the supposed real estate agent who’d ended his own life by jumping off a balcony at the Gun Cotton Hotel. As Ash dives into his sordid past, it’s readily apparent that, perhaps, not everything she’s writing is fiction.
Even more to the point, the lines between Ash’s visions of Morgan’s life before that ill-fated meeting in Gun Cotton and Ash’s own life aren’t quite as solid as they should be.

She manages to reconnect with an old friend and meets with a repairman who takes her on a more detailed tour of her home. What Ash learns is that her home has more secrets — and rooms — than she ever expected, though figuring out those riddles will have to wait.

In chapter 7 of the Westside Fairytales horror and dark fiction podcast’s story Scars in Time, Ash and Darcy are finally moved in — official residents of Gun Cotton. But their new home is anything but perfect. Years of neglect have left it near in ruins, and with the high pressures of her new practice, Darcy will have to leave much of the work to Ash.
Determined to not be a burden, Ash takes a plethora of chores onto her shoulders, possibly biting off more than she can chew. As she’s exploring her new home ahead of the planned renovations, she stumbles across something that’s been hidden away for a long time. Hidden, in fact, just where someone, or some thing, knew she would find it.

Today’s episode of the Westside Fairytales concerns a group of older folks, the tip-top of society who live on a secluded hill in West Virginia. Despite an all-consuming fire steadily, surely approaching them, they’re content to squabble amongst themselves about old feuds and grudges. That is, until one of them finds a seemingly innocuous sign that sets about the events that will bring an end to their little hilltop community.

In this continuation of the four-part series Tota Americana, Alex continues traveling through the wide open spaces of the American Great Plains, coming across an odd, lonely girl sitting by herself on a train platform. It’s on the Great Plains where we resume our story, the tale of a young person named Alex traveling across the country to the resting place of a barely known father. The hope is to find some deeper understanding of self through this visitation, but the paths ahead are riddled with pitfalls and parties of a dubious nature. Marks have been set into flesh that leave the scent of blood to linger on the wind, drawing forth a greater evil from the depths of the American Heartlands. A thing beyond reckoning, which must be faced in time.
Let us remind you that today’s story is the second of a four-part series. Our suggestion is that you return here after enjoying part one, but no worries if you’d like to listen out of order. We here at the Westside Fairytales sometimes eat our dessert before dinner as well.

Today’s episode of the Westside Fairytales will let us see the furthest limits to which loyalty might push us, by putting us in the shoes of a soldier faced with unthinkable duties. In the last months of a war he does not yet know has all but ended, he’ll be pushed to carry out orders beyond the scope of anything he’s ever, even in his worst nightmares, thought could come to pass. And we’ll see if those golden tethers of loyalty, so valuable and yet so easily broken, will bend him to the task at hand.

Today’s episode of the Westside Fairytales is the second half of a two-part tale.
Last episode, we left the subject of our story, a young man named Barden, in his hermitage of a flat in Paris. He’s been bothered by strange knocking from the apartment downstairs, and visions of some pale-faced apparition that may or may not be a symptom of his self-imposed isolation. Barden is a man who likes solitude not because he enjoys it, but because he’s afraid of trying anything else. But he’s started hearing the first low peels of bellsong in the foggy Parisian night, and soon he may find the call of at least one of those long and lonely notes too enticing to ignore.

I fought a war once. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen combat, more than a decade actually. But even after all that time, the memories of Iraq: The sand. The heat. The people. The violence. Those have stayed closer to my heart than almost any other thing I’ve done.
In today’s episode of the Westside Fairytales, we follow a veteran who faces a similar problem, coming to terms with the guilt of surviving something many others did not. He’s a man who’s taken up ultra-marathoning as a way to escape the memories and feelings that have haunted him since his last ugly day in the sandbox. But on this run, he finds something else chasing him through the rocky sands of the Mojave desert. Something he might not be able to outrun.

The grind can get to you. My guess is you know what I’m talking about. Most of you, my Dear Listeners, are probably listening to this in the background of some banal task. You’re driving yourself to work, or the kids to school. You’re out mowing the lawn or sitting on a cold bench waiting for the train to finally show.
But like most people in this modern world, you’re somebody with someplace to be and something to do. And it’s hard sometimes, the way the days begin to flit by as you stack dollars and pay bills. As your hair grays and the days disappear until, one day, it’s like your whole life is behind you. But the grind, the grind never slows.
Today’s episode of the Westside Fairytales is about a man trapped in that same grind, by his own desire to become the master of the great millstone itself. But his preoccupation with success is getting to him, coloring every new day darker than the last.

Life is like the tides. It comes and goes, rises and falls with the moon and light and darkness. This endless force propels us forward no matter our situation, until we can be moved no more.

Some fears are not shared evenly amongst the inhabitants of this little blue marble. The fear, for instance, that your agency could be stripped away at any moment without recourse isn’t something we all feel, but that some of us know all too well.
It’s fear that comes with a shaky position in society. Women, minorities, and folks with lifestyles and predilections that buck the status quo. If you’re not one of these folks, you might not know what it’s like to not be believed. To simply be ignored by the powers that be, to be dismissed casually. Even to have your life simply placed into the hands of another, regardless of how you feel about the situation.
Today’s episode of the Westside Fairytales lives amongst the tendrils of this idea. It is the story of a woman who wakes up to a life that isn’t hers, that she doesn’t want to live, and that certain forces, certain people, won’t allow her to leave. Our protagonist knows the truth about herself, but she’s stripped of her freedoms, even her dignity, simply because that’s the sort of thing that happens to women sometimes.

Today’s episode of the Westside Fairytales is about a man trapped in a relationship he despises. He doesn’t know if he hates his wife, but he does know he plans on leaving her, just as soon as they reach the end of the long trip they’ve embarked on together.
But his plans are put on hold when they stop for gas at a remote desert gas station. Strange things have the building and its occupants under siege. There seems to be no way out, and unfortunately for our protagonist, “til death do us part” may be his only option.

Life has a pace, a rhythm. It’s always unsettling when things disturb it. The death of a friend, an injury, an accident, when the unexpected comes calling it usually visits with bad news in tow.
Today’s episode of the Westside Fairytales is about a man who sets his watch by life’s banalities. He lives a boring life, a life he generally enjoys, but things are about to change for him. It starts small; a gap appears on a street where there was no gap. But even a small change in a boring life can have extraordinary effects.

There’s an old sort of saying that the best judge is one who hates his work. A man eager to pass judgment on others, that is, is the man least capable of doing the job.
Today’s episode of the Westside Fairytales is about just that sort of man, a reserved individual sent to a small village in a seemingly medieval country, tasked with finding out why people passing by the town are being branded as criminals and hanged.
It’s not just a story on the passing of judgment, but on the nature of those judgments we pass and are forced to pass on each other. How eagerness for justice may lead us to injustice.

We all feel the urge to run sometimes. Pressure builds up around us, pushing on our chests and heads, caving in the soft bits inside our ears and eyes until we feel fit to burst. Money, family, loneliness, the struggle to be known, the pain of being forgotten, it all stacks up and gets heavier. And heavier. And heavier.
And when it gets to be too much, there’s a part of you inside that lets you know. We need to run now. We either run, or we die.
Today’s episode of the Westside Fairytales is about a girl who decides to run. She’s taken all she can of the life that was given to her at birth, a life that’s had terrible consequences for most all of the people who’ve gotten tangled up in it. She gets involved with a soon-to-be notorious outlaw, and cuts a path of crime and pain across America, until she arrives at her final destination a thousand miles from where she started, feeling like she’d never really left at all.

Guilt grows like a weed in the hearts of sinners. It’s hard to imagine anybody who’s never wronged another person. At some point, all of us are going to make a decision we’ll have trouble living with for the rest of our lives. And even if it’s a small thing, a trifle, it’ll sit with you in the dark hours of the night, stroking the skin at the back of your neck to keep you awake.
Today's episode of the Westside Fairytales is about just such a feeling. A young boy in a bad neighborhood does something awful, and as he tries to move on from the deed, he finds it haunting him at every step. Never letting up for a second.

We all feel lonely sometimes. Some of us never really feel like we’re not alone, even when we’re surrounded by people. For guys like me, and our main character of this episode of the Westside Fairytales, that means slinking out to the bar. Secreting yourself away somewhere dark and comfortable, where it’s okay to be a man on his own.
Thing is, that kind of lifestyle can wear on you. It can get too comfortable, and the loneliness might end up becoming your only friend. You become a man alone, sitting at a bar, waiting for friends you barely know, who might not show at all.
