What Is Music?: A Music Podcast About R.E.M.
The Big Mates discuss cardboard robots, fantasy and reality, Flight of the Conchords, and MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 by Lauryn Hill.
Adam, Steve, and Lucas continue their deep dive into the career and discography of Lauryn Hill by exploring her only full-length release outside of her debut album. It takes the form of a live performance on MTV Unplugged, during which Lauryn Hill played a set of entirely new songs. The Big Mates talk about the writing and recording process, the context surrounding the songs, and offer up analysis, opinions, and thoughts from three differing perspectives on music, from being deeply into analysis and music, to not caring for art or critique, and everything in between.
They touch on the themes of the album, from identity and politics, to religion and the music industry, as well as discussing the form of the album and how it was released.
What will we make of the album? Is it even really an album? Are there more lyrics on it than there are in the entire discography of Muse? Find out on this episode of What Is Music?
Our next episode is out on Monday October 2nd and will continue the deep-dive into MTV Unplugged 2.0.
